CAMPUS WATCH: Below is a summary of campus activity reported to or observed by the University Police Department patrol officers between Tuesday, 05-15-07 and Wednesday 05-16-07. * * * * * SCAM ALERT * * * * * A University of Texas student was taken into custody for operating a "three card Monty" scam. The scam operates in the following manner: The victim is shown three cards that are bent so that they will not lay flat. The suspect will show the cards and then indicate a particular card that the intended victim is to find. The suspect will use a sleight-of-hand technique as the cards are moved back and forth on a flat surface. The suspect will tell the intended victim to follow that card as they are moved back and forth. The intended victim is then asked to bet and then to pick a card. If correct, the victim wins; however, that is not what happens. The intended victim is baited and allowed to win a small amount of money until the "fix" is put in. At this time the victim is fleeced. The UT student that was arrested recently did something similar to what was just described. The victim in this case thought that the suspect was "just kidding" and became upset when the suspect took his ill gotten goods. The victim protested and told the suspect that she was calling the police. The suspect informed the victim that she too would be arrested for gambling. The victim gambled and contacted the police. The suspect was the one arrested based on the facts given by the victim. If you believe that you have been a victim of this type of scam, or if you have additional information contact your local police department.
