Report for 06/01/2007

CAMPUS WATCH: Below is a summary of campus activity reported to or observed by the University Police Department patrol officers between Thursday, 05-31-07 and Friday, 06-01-07. SID RICHARDSON HALL, 2300 Red River Suspicious Person: A UT staff member discovered an unknown subject sitting inside her second floor office. When the unknown subject was challenged, the unknown subject stated that he was looking for the Dean's Office. The staff member gave the subject directions to the Dean's Office. A short time later the same unknown subject was observed inside another office. Again the unknown subject stated that he was looking for the Dean's Office. Again he was given the same directions. The unknown subject was described as: Black male, 5'-11", and 260 pounds. The subject was last seen wearing a whiteT-shirt and blue jeans. Occurred on: 5-31-07, at 1:15 PM. Crime Prevention Tip: In many of the Office Safety programs, we stress the importance of offering to help an individual find their way to a desired location by escorting them there. Many times a thief will find the quickest exit from a building because of all the undesired attention that is bestowed upon them. They relish the idea that a staff member will simply assume that was all they were looking for. Offer to help and watch their reaction. A person truly needing help will be grateful. A person looking for an opportunity to commit a theft will want to look for better hunting grounds. 200 BLOCK WEST DEAN KEETON Theft / Assist Outside Agency: A UT student observed a non-UT subject attempting to steal a bicycle from the bike racks located on the west side of Kinsolving Dormitory. Prior to the arrival of the officers, the subject rode away from the area on one bicycle while carrying a second. During the investigation, the officers located the subject a few blocks away. As the investigation continued the subject informed the officers, that he had "just" found the bike in the racks. The subject was taken into custody for Theft and transported to Central Booking. The officer soon learned that the subject had two outstanding outside agency warrants. Occurred on: 5-31-07, at 4:50 PM. Crime Prevention Tip: Kudos to this student and Congratulations as the next Hungry for Justice Pizza recipient. What is intriguing about this story is that this student was at the police station 2 hours earlier getting information about bicycle security. This student took the time to ask questions and learn what the bicycle thieves are looking for and what she could do to fight back. Once again Congratulations on a Job Well Done. CAMPUS WIDE: Non-Criminal Calls: In addition to the above criminal cases, The University of Texas Police Department responded to 31 alarm calls, 3 suspicious persons calls, 2 medical calls, 1collision report, and 15 unsecured buildings between 05-31-07 and 06-01-07. Contact UT Police at 471-4441 if you have any information regarding any of the above incidents or call 911 regarding suspicious persons, suspicious activities or crime. Your call may help solve or prevent a crime. Campus Watch comments should be directed to Officer Darrell Halstead at 512-232-9634 or Darrell.halstead@austin.utexas.edu .
