Report for 06/06/2007

CAMPUS WATCH: Below is a summary of campus activity reported to or observed by the University Police Department patrol officers between Tuesday, 06-05-07 Wednesday, 06-06-07. Congratulations to everyone for another "Crime Free Day" at the University of Texas. Crime Prevention Tip of the Day: During the parent's portion of this year's freshman orientation, there were several good questions asked on a verity of topics. Laptop Computer Security: I cannot recommend using a Pit-bull dog, to guard your laptop computer. However, engraving your computer with your state issued driver's license number, on two visible surfaces, will act as a visual deterrent for a thief. Never ever leave your computer unattended for any length of time. This is an open invitation for a thief and creates the opportunity that the thief is looking for. Computer security cables provide a false sense of security because they are easily cut. These thin cables do not provide any security and are not recommended. Dormitory Security: The weakest link in dormitory security is the residents. Many of the residents will allow unknown individuals to follow them onto a restricted floor. In addition, residents feel secure behind the security doors and forget to secure their individual rooms. Once again creating that opportunity for a thief. CAMPUS WIDE: Non-Criminal Calls: In addition to the above criminal cases, The University of Texas Police Department responded to 56 alarm calls, 2 suspicious persons calls, 2 medical calls, and 8 unsecured buildings between 06-05-07 and 06-06-07. Contact UT Police at 471-4441 if you have any information regarding any of the above incidents or call 911 regarding suspicious persons, suspicious activities or crime. Your call may help solve or prevent a crime. Campus Watch comments should be directed to Officer Darrell Halstead at 512-232-9634 or Darrell.halstead@austin.utexas.edu .
