Report for 07/10/2007

CAMPUS WATCH: Below is a summary of campus activity reported to or observed by the University Police Department patrol officers between Monday, 07-09-07 and Tuesday, 07-10-07. * * * * * SCAM ALERT * * * * * The University of Texas Police Department has received information that a person(s) is calling people representing themselves as being part of the University of Texas Department of Psychology. This person tells the individual that he/she is doing research on people that are in a romantic relationship. This is a SCAM. The University of Texas Police Department would like to inform the public that if a person calls, telling you that they are with the University of Texas Department of Psychology and wants to conduct a survey over the telephone, it is probably not someone from the University of Texas. The Department of Psychology does most, if not all, of its Human Subject Research in person NOT over the telephone. If you have any questions on whether the Department of Psychology is conducting a particular type of research, call the Research Coordinator at (512) 232-2469. GREGORY GYM, 2101 Speedway Suspicious Person: A persistent non-UT subject entered Gregory Gym and attempted to obtain the contact information of a staff member from other staff members. After several staff members refused to divulge any information, the subject left the area. Occurred on: 7-09-07, at 6:08 PM. Crime Prevention Tip: How much information is too much information? Remember, not only are there identity thieves out there wanting your personal information, but others with unknown intentions. Restrict as much of your personal information from public access as you can. JESTER DORMITORY, 201 East 21st Street Criminal Trespass: A UT staff member discovered a non-UT subject sleeping inside the second piano lounge. The staff member asked the subject if he was a current student. The subject was unable to produce any valid UT ID. The subject was asked to leave the area. During the investigation, the officers discovered the non-UT subject attempting to set up a campsite next to the Blanton Art Museum. The officer soon discovered that the subject had been issued a prior criminal trespass warning. The subject was taken into custody for Criminal Trespass and transported to Central Booking. Occurred on: 7-09-07, at 11:56 PM. CAMPUS WIDE: Non-Criminal Calls: In addition to the above criminal cases, The University of Texas Police Department responded to 24 alarm calls, 3 suspicious activity calls, 2 suspicious persons reports, 2 medical calls, and 15 unsecured buildings between 07-09-07 and 7-10-07.
