Report for 07/11/2007

CAMPUS WATCH: Below is a summary of campus activity reported to or observed by the University Police Department patrol officers between Tuesday, 07-10-07 and Wednesday, 07-11-07. * * * * * SCAM ALERT * * * * * The University of Texas Police Department has received information that a person(s) is calling people and representing themselves as being part of the University of Texas Department of Psychology. This person tells the individual that he/she is doing research on people that are in a romantic relationship. This is a SCAM. The University of Texas Police Department would like to inform the public that if a person calls, telling you that they are with the University of Texas Department of Psychology and wants to conduct a survey over the telephone, it is probably not someone from the University of Texas. The Department of Psychology does most, if not all, of its Human Subject Research in person, NOT over the telephone. If you have any questions on whether the Department of Psychology is conducting a particular type of research, call the Research Coordinator at (512) 232-4269. Correction: I printed the incorrect telephone number yesterday for the Research Coordinator. The correct number is: (512) 232-4269. I am sorry if I caused any confusion. GREGORY GYM, 2101 Speedway Theft: A Samsung MP3 player was stolen from a secured locker located inside the women's locker room. During the investigation, the officer soon discovered that the locker did not secure properly due to normal wear and tear. This allowed for unauthorized access. Loss value: $150.00. Occurred between: 7-09-07, at 9:00 PM and 7-10-07, at 8:00 PM. HARRY RANSOM CENTER, 300 West 21st Street Criminal Trespass Warning (2 Counts): Two non-UT subjects were discovered sleeping in a makeshift campsite. During the investigation, both subjects were issued a written criminal trespass warning and escorted from the area. Occurred on: 7-11-07, at 2:30 AM. STUDENT SERVICES BUILDING, 100 West Dean Keeton Criminal Trespass: UT police officers discovered a non-UT subject inside the building while responding to an unrelated call. During the investigation, the subject stopped and told the officers to take him to jail. As the investigation continued, the officers confirmed that the subject had received several prior criminal trespass warnings. The subject was taken into custody for Criminal Trespass and was transported to Central Booking. Occurred on: 7-09-07, at 9:58 PM. CAMPUS WIDE: Non-Criminal Calls: In addition to the above criminal cases, The University of Texas Police Department responded to 66 alarm calls, 3 suspicious activity calls, 2 suspicious persons reports, and 10 unsecured buildings between 07-10-07 and 7-11-07. Contact UT Police at 471-4441 if you have any information regarding any of the above incidents or call 911 regarding suspicious persons, suspicious activities or crime. Your call may help solve or prevent a crime. Campus Watch comments should be directed to Officer Darrell Halstead at 512-232-9634 or Darrell.halstead@austin.utexas.edu .
