CAMPUS WATCH: Below is a summary of campus activity reported to or observed by the University Police Department patrol officers between Monday, 08-27-07 and Tuesday, 08-28-07. WELCOME BACK The University of Texas at Austin Police Department (UTPD) welcomes each of you back to campus for another great semester. I hope you all safely survived the summer and are now settling into your respective campus routines. This semester UTPD is setting the mark high for reducing campus crime. A first step in that effort is to make sure each of you is aware of the services and crime prevention activities our command staff, patrol officers, and support services offer. I invite each of you to visit http://www.utexas.edu/police/ or http://www.utexas.edu/police/prevention/presentations.html for more information on any of the UTPD services and programs listed below: Property engraving Defensive driving classes Rape Aggression Defense (RAD)-a women’s self-defense class Drug and alcohol awareness classes Classes for dealing with workplace violence These services are offered free of charge to university faculty, staff, and students. Contact the UT Police Department at (512) 471-4441 or come by our office located at 2201 Robert Dedman Drive if you are interested in any of these activities. We are a community and as a community we can all work together to reduce crime on this campus. One of the best ways we work together is by keeping each other informed. Criminals rely on the fact that not everyone knows what events transpire on or around campus. On a regular basis, UTPD posts information about crime in an e-mail called Campus Watch. If you want to stay informed, subscribe to Campus Watch at http://www.utexas.edu/police/campuswatch/subscribe.php In short, we encourage you to be proactive about your safety and informed about your community. As always, UTPD is here to respond to any emergency you may have (call 911). We hope you have a safe and happy semester. JESTER WEST DORMITORY, 201 East 21st Street Consumption of Alcohol by a Minor: A UT student was observed staggering and being supported by another UT student due to having difficulty maintaining her balance. During the investigation, the officers were able to locate the staggering student inside a 9th floor dormitory room. The student was being attended to by two on-duty staff members. As the investigation continued, the officers detected a very strong odor of alcohol on the student's breath and learned that she was under the legal age of 21. The student was issued a field release citation for Consumption of Alcohol by a Minor as well as a referral to the Dean of Student's Office. Occurred on: 8-28-07, at 2:55 AM. JESTER WEST DORMITORY, 201 East 21st Street Consumption of Alcohol by a Minor (3 Counts): A UT student was observed providing alcohol enriched compost while two other UT students were standing beside her. During the investigation, the officers detected a very strong odor of alcohol on the breaths of all three students. The officers soon learned that all three students were under the legal age of 21 and had attended a party at the Theta Kappa Epsilon fraternity. All three students were issued field release citations for Consumption of Alcohol by a Minor and were given referrals to the Dean of Student's Office. Occurred on: 8-28-07, at 2:38 AM. Crime Prevention Tip: I don't believe that any of these students in the two above cases thought that their night would end with criminal charges being filed against them, let alone having to explain their actions to the Dean of Students. I know we encounter life-changing events daily, but some of these events will have a more dramatic effect on the lives of others. The investigations are done, charges were filed. Now these students will set dates to meet with the presiding judge. The Dean of Students will set a date for each of these students as well. What can each student expect? Fines Community Service Alcohol Education Classes And the suspension of their State issued driver's license So when you plan on going out for a "night on the town", make us a part of your plans. ROBERTS DORMITORY, 303 East 21st Street Harassment: A UT student reported receiving several harassing e-mails that threaten in nature from another UT student. Occurred on: 8-27-07, between 12:56 PM and 1:23 PM. Crime Prevention Tip: Many students will endure harassment from a former boyfriend or girlfriend for many months because they either do not know who to contact or they feel that they can handle the harassment. I would like to say no one needs to endure this because the other person is their ex. When harassing telephone calls, e-mails or text messages start to occur, contact the police to report the offense. TOWNES HALL, 727 East Dean Keeton Theft: A black Kona mountain bicycle was stolen from the bike racks located on the south side of the building after being secured with a self-locking cable lock. Loss value: $250.00. Occurred on: 8-27-07, between 8:30 AM and 1:00 PM. 200 BLOCK MARTIN LUTHER KING BLVD Burglary of Motor Vehicle: A non-UT subject reported the theft of a Canon Power Shot digital camera from an unsecured vehicle. Loss value: $400.00. Occurred on: 8-24-07, between 12:01 PM and 2:00 PM. Crime Prevention Tip of the Day: I spoke with the Student Government representative that is currently in charge of SURE WALK. I am happy to announce that SURE WALK is now available for students that would like an escort back to their dormitory, car, or to their apartment. Sure Walk escorts are available Monday through Friday 9:00 PM to 1:00 AM from Gregory Gym, Perry Castaneda Library, and the Peter T. Flawn Academic Center. If you are part of a student organization and you are interested in volunteering contact Kelly Hickman at: hickman@mail.utexas.edu or 495-3938. CAMPUS WIDE: Non-Criminal Calls: In addition to the above criminal cases, The University of Texas Police Department responded to 58 alarm calls, 2 suspicious activity calls, 3 suspicious persons reports, 1 collision report, and 8 unsecured buildings between 8-27-07 and 8-28-07. Contact UT Police at 471-4441 if you have any information regarding any of the above incidents or call 911 regarding suspicious persons, suspicious activities or crime. Your call may help solve or prevent a crime. Campus Watch comments should be directed to Officer Darrell Halstead at 512-232-9634 or Darrell.halstead@austin.utexas.edu .
