CAMPUS WATCH: Below is a summary of campus activity reported to or observed by the University Police Department patrol officers between Thursday, 09-13-07 and Monday, 09-17-07. * * * * ADMINISTRATIVE MESSAGE * * * * * The University of Texas Police Department is now accepting applications for the 3rd UT Citizen Police Academy. BRAZOS PARKING GARAGE, 200 East Martin Luther King Blvd Theft of Service / Criminal Mischief: A gold colored Volvo was observed "tailgating" another vehicle as that vehicle was leaving the parking garage. As the second vehicle attempted to follow, the control arm came down and hit the second vehicle. Loss value: $125.00. Occurred on: 9-16-07, at 1:55 AM. HARRY RANSOM CENTER, 300 West 21st Street Criminal Trespass: A UT student observed a non-UT subject standing inside a planter "watering" the bushes. During the investigation, the officers soon discovered that the non-UT subject had been issued a prior criminal trespass warning. The subject was taken into custody for criminal trespass and was transported to Central Booking. Occurred on: 9-15-07, at 6:42 PM. IMAGING RESEARCH CENTER, 3529B Braker Lane Noise Complaint: A UT staff member reported hearing strange noises outside of her office. During the investigation, the officer discovered that the strange noise was acorns falling from the trees and hitting the staff member's window. Occurred on: 9-16-07, at 4:40 AM. KINSOLVING DORMITORY, 2605 Whitis Ave Harassment: A UT student reported receiving harassing and alarming messages from an unknown subject on her My Space and Face Book accounts. Occurred between: 9-08-07 and 9-15-07. Crime Prevention Tip: Social networking is a great tool when used in the format that it was intended to be used, allowing individuals to meet without meeting face-to-face. These social networking tools come with a double edge. Criminals are using these sites to groom new victims and stalk others. PARKING LOT 104, 1900 Block North IH35 Burglary of Motor Vehicle: UT police officers discovered the passenger windows of a white Chevy and silver Dodge truck broken out. As the investigation continued, the officers were able to locate the owner of both vehicles. Officers learned that the following property was taken: From the Chevy truck, a Pioneer AM/FM/CD stereo with a remote. Loss value: $150.00. From the Dodge truck: Sony AM/FM/CD stereo, two 12-inch speakers, and an amplifier. Loss value: $700.00. Discovered on: 9-14-07, at 11:40 PM. PERRY-CASTANEDA LIBRARY, 101 East 21st Street Criminal Trespass Warning: A non-UT subject was observed harassing a group of UT students outside of the library. During the investigation, the subject informed the officers that she simply was asking the students for a blanket. As the investigation continued, the subject was issued a criminal trespass warning and was escorted from the area. Occurred on: 9-17-06, at 2:25 AM. REC SPORTS CENTER, 2001 San Jacinto Blvd Theft: A blue Outdoor backpack containing a black leather wallet, several credit cards, personal identification, several textbooks were stolen from a secured locker located inside the first floor men's locker room. Loss value: $150.00. Occurred on: 9-14-07, at 5:15 PM. UNION BUILDING, #4 West Mall Suspicious Activity: A UT student observed two subjects attempting to cut a U-shaped lock from a bicycle located on the northeast side of the building. During the investigation, the officers learned that the bicycle belonged to one of the individuals who had lost the key to the lock. The second subject was the locksmith, employed to cut off the lock. Occurred on: 9-16-07, at 8:11 PM. Crime Prevention Tip: I would like to congratulate the UT student that called this activity in. Even though the event turned out to be benign, it could have been an actual theft in progress. Remember, UTPD offers a free pizza through the Hungry for Justice Program. 100 BLOCK WEST 6th STREET Public Intoxication: A UT police officer observed a non-UT subject using the wall of building to help maintain his balance. The officer then observed the fall and not get back up or attempt to get up. The subject did not respond to voice commands, but did respond when the officer performed a sternum rub. The subject would wake up then lose consciousness. Austin EMS arrived at the scene and treated the subject for alcohol poisoning. The subject was transported to a local area hospital for additional treatment. Occurred on: 9-15-07, at 2:08 AM. 1900 BLOCK SAN JACINTO BLVD Driving While Intoxicated: A red BMW was observed traveling at a high rate of speed and failed to stop at a controlled intersection. During the investigation, the officer detected a very strong odor of alcohol on the driver's breath and noted that the driver's eyes were bloodshot. The UT student driver informed the officer that he had not been drinking any alcohol. The officer administered the Standardized Field Sobriety tests to the driver. The driver displayed enough clues that indicated that he was intoxicated. The driver was taken into custody for Driving While Intoxicated and was transported to Central Booking. Occurred on: 9-15-07, at 2:20 AM. 2200 BLOCK SAN JACINTO BLVD Criminal Trespass Warning: A UT police officer observed a known offender riding a blue, women's style, Roadmaster mountain bicycle. During the investigation, the officers were unable to locate the owner of the property since the bicycle was not registered or engraved with the owner's driver's license number. The bicycle was impounded, and the known offender was issued a criminal trespass warning. Occurred on: 9-15-07, at 5:25 PM. Crime Prevention Tip: This subject was first seen at the intersection of Dean Keeton and University Ave, an area that he is very familiar with. The UT Police Department is currently attempting to locate the owner of the Roadmaster bicycle. If you have any additional information, contact Sgt. Donna Maga at 512-232-9639, or dmaga@mail.utexas.edu 2200 BLOCK SPEEDWAY Evading Arrest and or Detention: A UT police officer observed three subjects pushing over several newspaper stands. As the officer attempted to stop the subjects, one subject took off running. After several failed attempts to locate the subject, officers received a telephone call from a UT student who stated that two subjects were looking for their friend. During the course of the investigation, the officers were able to locate the non-UT suspect. A warrant was issued for the subject's arrest due to the amount of time that elapsed. Occurred on: 9-15-07, at 12:53 AM. CAMPUS WIDE: Non-Criminal Calls: In addition to the above criminal cases, The University of Texas Police Department responded to 115 alarm calls, 11 suspicious activity calls, 8 suspicious persons reports, 5 medical emergency call, and 10 unsecured buildings between 9-13-07 and 9-17-07.
