CAMPUS WATCH: Below is a summary of campus activity reported to or observed by the University Police Department patrol officers between Tuesday, 10-02-07 and Wednesday, 10-03-07. CAROTHERS DORMITORY, 2501 Whitis Ave Possession of Marijuana: Three UT students were observed huddled together near the southwest corner of the building. A UT staff member observed one subject invert a lighter to light something. All three subjects appeared to be very nervous and kept looking over their shoulders. During the investigation, the officers recovered a ceramic pipe that contained a green leafy substance that later tested positive for marijuana. One student was issued a court appearance citation for the Possession of Marijuana. In addition all three students received referrals to the Dean of Student's Office. Occurred on: 10-03-07, at 12:55 AM. COLLEGE OF BUSINESS ADMINISTRATION, 2110 Speedway Theft: A Dell computer monitor, keyboard and mouse were stolen from a secured 6th floor office. Loss value: $180.00. Occurred between: 9-29-07, at 10:30 PM and 10-02-07, at 10:04 AM. 200 BLOCK EAST 21st STREET Possession of Drug Paraphernalia / Assist Outside Agency: A non-UT subject was observed by several UT students harassing pedestrians as they walked past him. During the investigation, the officers located the subject standing outside of Jester West Dormitory. The officers soon learned that the subject had several outstanding outside agency warrants. The subject was taken into custody and was transported to Central Booking. During a search of the subject, prior to being transported, the officers discovered a silver pipe that contained narcotic residue in the bowl. In addition to other law enforcement actions taken the subject was also charged with Possession of Drug Paraphernalia. Occurred on: 10-03-07, at 12:02 AM. 1900 BLOCK SAN JACINTO BLVD Criminal Trespass Warning: A UT staff member was approached by a non-UT subject who was panhandling for money. During the investigation, the officers were able to locate the subject and noted that he matched the description of the subject who had been inside the TSC asking for cigarettes. The subject was issued a criminal trespass warning and was escorted from the area. Occurred on: 10-02-07, at 7:01 AM. 2300 BLOCK GUADALUPE Criminal Trespass Warning (3 Counts): Three non-UT subjects were observed panhandling while they were playing a variety of different instruments. During the investigation, all three subjects were issued criminal trespass warnings and were escorted from the area. Occurred on: 10-03-07, at 12:50 AM. Crime Prevention Tip of the Day: October is National Crime Prevention Month. I was surprised to discover that this is Cyber Security Awareness Month as well. The University of Texas ITS department would like to assist everyone with Cyber Security information: This week, October 1-5, ITS will focus on how to avoid phishing (fishing) scams and spyware in “I didn’t take the bait.” Cyber Security Tips of the Week - Don’t give out personal or financial information in e-mail or instant messages. - Be careful about opening attachments and downloading files. - Don’t use the “opt out” option on suspicious e-mails. - Think before you trust a Web site. - Review your bank and credit card statements to make sure no one but you has access to your money. CAMPUS WIDE: Non-Criminal Calls: In addition to the above criminal cases, The University of Texas Police Department responded to 15 alarm calls, 4 suspicious activity calls, 4 suspicious persons reports, 2 medical emergency calls, and 6 unsecured buildings between 10-02-07-07 and 10-03-07.
