CAMPUS WATCH: Below is a summary of campus activity reported to or observed by the University Police Department patrol officers between Monday, 10-22-07 and Tuesday, 10-23-07. BELLMONT HALL, 2109 San Jacinto Blvd Theft: Five gold championship rings were stolen from a secured 6th floor office. Loss value: $1,500.00. Occurred between: 10-16-07 and 10-22-07. PARKING LOT 104, 1900 Block North IH-35 Burglary of Motor Vehicle: The driver's side passenger window of a 2007 Ford Escape was discovered broken out. During the investigation, the officer attempted to contact the registered owner to have the vehicle inventoried for any missing property. The officer was unable to contact the owner. Loss value: Unknown at this time. Discovered on: 10-22-07, at 9:15 PM. SIMKINS DORMITORY, 2501 San Jacinto Blvd Theft: A red and black Mongoose mountain bicycle was stolen from the bike racks located on the west side of the building after being secured with a self-locking cable lock. Loss value: $100.00. Occurred on: 10-22-07, between 1:00 AM and 7:00 PM. TOWNES HALL, 727 Dean Keeton Theft: A blue and grey CD player and a grey Texas hooded sweatshirt was reported stolen from the lobby area after being left unattended and unsecured. Loss value: 25.00. Occurred between:10-19-07 and 10-22-07. TOWNES HALL, 727 Dean Keeton Criminal Trespass Warning: A non-UT subject was observed by a staff member rummaging through a UT student's computer case. The staff member contacted the UT police and kept the subject in-view as the officers were arriving. During the investigation, the officers learned that the subject had not taken any personal items belonging to the student. The subject was issued a written criminal trespass warning and was escorted from campus. Occurred on: 1-21-07, at 5:50 PM. Crime Prevention Tip: The staff member in this case did a great job in providing the police department with a very detailed description of the suspect. If this subject believes that Townes Hall is an easy target, he will return. You too can hit an "easy button" by simply calling the UT Police Department to report any and all suspicious activity. To the staff member, you did a GREAT JOB. UNIVERSITY TEACHING CENTER, 105 West 21st Street Terrorist Threat: A UT staff member received a telephone that implied a threat. During the investigation, the area was searched with negative results. Occurred on: 10-22-07, at 1:00 PM. WILL C. HOGG BUILDING, #2 East Mall Theft: A blue Trek mountain bicycle was stolen from the bike racks located on the east side of the building after being secured with a self-locking cable lock. Loss value: $700.00. Occurred on: 10-21-07, between 8:30 PM and 9:30 PM. 200 BLOCK WEST 6th STREET Public Intoxication: A non-UT subject was observed running across a busy street, then attempting to hide behind a large oak tree. A second non-UT subject was also observed running as if he were looking for an individual. During the investigation, the officer located the first subject and discovered that the subject had fallen. The officer detected a strong odor of alcohol the subject's breath. The subject was treated by Austin EMS and was transported to a local area hospital. The second subject was located and again officers detected a very strong odor of alcohol on the subject's breath. The subject stated that he was looking for his friend who had run off. The second subject was confused as to his location and where he lived. The subject was taken into custody for Public Intoxication and was transported to Central Booking. Occurred on: 10-23-07, at 2:00 AM. 2300 BLOCK SAN JACINTO BLVD Driving While Intoxicated: A green Ford truck was observed running through a stop sign. During the traffic investigation, the officer detected a very strong odor of alcohol on the driver's breath. The officer also noted the driver's eyes were bloodshot and watery. The officer administered the Standardized Field Sobriety tests to the driver. The driver displayed enough clues that indicated that he was intoxicated. The driver was taken into custody for Driving While Intoxicated and was transported to Central Booking. Occurred on: 10-23-07, at 3:04 AM. Crime Prevention Tip of the Day: October is National Crime Prevention Month. I was surprised to discover that this is Cyber Security Awareness Month as well. Cyber Security Tips of the Week - Create and use strong passwords. - Use a firewall. - Don’t use real words or personal information in your passwords. - Use spam filters in e-mail programs and divert suspicious e-mail. - Treat IM from unknown sources as suspiciously as you would unknown e-mails. - Check your security settings and disallow automatic sharing or opening of files. Read more at: www.utexas.edu/its/secure CAMPUS WIDE: Non-Criminal Calls: In addition to the above criminal cases, The University of Texas Police Department responded to 22 alarm calls, 3 suspicious activity calls, 3 suspicious persons reports, 2 medical emergency calls, and 4 unsecured buildings between 10-22-07-07 and 10-23-07.
