CAMPUS WATCH: Below is a summary of campus activity reported to or observed by the University Police Department patrol officers between Wednesday, 10-24-07 and Thursday, 10-25-07. ACES BUILDING, 201 East 24th Street Harassment: A UT student reported being followed by another UT student after being told to stop. During the investigation, the officers located the second UT student and learned that the subject had emailed, text messaged, and telephoned the victim numerous times. As the investigation continued, the subject informed the officers that he was attempting to get to know the other student and thought that she was playing a game. The subject was taken into custody and was transported to the University of Texas Police Building. The victim declined to file charges at this time. Occurred on: 10-24-07, at 11:00 PM. Crime Prevention Tip: When you encounter a situation where you have told that individual to stop calling, emailing, or texting and they continue with their campaign of harassment. Show them your "game," contact the police and report the harassment. The police, they don't play. TOWNES HALL, 727 East Dean Keeton Theft: A LED reflector and a black and silver bicycle seat were stolen from a bicycle that was secured to the bike racks located on the north side of the building. Loss value: $35.00. Discovered on: 10-24-07, at 2:20 PM. 1500 BLOCK RED RIVER Criminal Trespass Warning: A non-UT subject was observed "aggressively" stopping pedestrians and asking them for money. During the investigation, the officers were able to locate the subject near the Frank Erwin Center. The subject was issued a written Criminal Trespass Warning and was escorted from the campus area. Occurred on: 10-24-07, at 7:00 PM. 2000 BLOCK ROBERT DEDMAN DR. Public Intoxication: A non-UT subject was observed waging a losing battle against earth's gravity. The officer observed the subject fall several times. During the investigation, the officer detected a very strong odor of alcohol on the subject's breath and noted that the subject's clothes were soiled and wet. As the investigation continued, the subject was taken into custody for Public Intoxication and was transported to Central Booking. Occurred on: 10-25-07, at 3:15 AM. Crime Prevention Tip of the Day: October is National Crime Prevention Month. I was surprised to discover that this is Cyber Security Awareness Month as well. The University of Texas ITS department would like to assist everyone with Cyber Security information: This week, October 22-26, Information Technology Services (ITS) continues Cyber Security Awareness Month by focusing on blocking, deflecting and outsmarting cyber attacks in “I’m unbreakable.” Learn about creating safe passwords, installing a firewall and other practical things you can do to keep your personal information and your data safe online. Cyber Security Tips of the Week - Create and use strong passwords. - Use a firewall. - Don’t use real words or personal information in your passwords. - Use spam filters in e-mail programs and divert suspicious e-mail. - Treat IM from unknown sources as suspiciously as you would unknown e-mails. - Check your security settings and disallow automatic sharing or opening of files. Read more at: www.utexas.edu/its/secure CAMPUS WIDE: Non-Criminal Calls: In addition to the above criminal cases, The University of Texas Police Department responded to 19 alarm calls, 3 suspicious activity calls, 4 suspicious persons reports, 2 medical emergency calls, and 5 unsecured buildings between 10-24-07 and 10-25-07.
