Report for 10/26/2007

CAMPUS WATCH: Below is a summary of campus activity reported to or observed by the University Police Department patrol officers between Thursday, 10-25-07 and Friday, 10-26-07. MUSIC BUILDING EAST, 2405 Trinity Street Theft: A silver road bicycle was stolen from the bike racks located on the southwest side of the building after being secured with a self-locking cable lock. Loss value: $250.00. Occurred on: 10-24-07, between 7:00 PM and 9:00 PM. Crime Prevention Tip: Bicycle thefts continue at UT for 25,000 reasons. According to Parking and Transportation there are an estimated 25,000 bicyclists that commute around campus. That makes 25,000 opportunities for a thief. Since the beginning of the Fall 2007 semester, in approx. 90% of the reported bicycle thefts, the former owner used a single locking system. The locking system consisted of a self-locking cable lock, not the recommended two-lock locking system, a U-shaped lock and a self-locking cable lock. Parking and Transportation has begun a program to help reduce the number of bicycle thefts. P&T will lend out a two-lock locking system to registered UT students, staff and faculty that have lost or forgotten their bicycle locks for one week. PARKING LOT 104, 1900 Block North IH-35 Burglary of Motor Vehicle / Assist Outside Agency: A non-UT subject was observed attempting to enter into a locked toolbox located on the back of a Chevy truck. After several failed attempts, the subject then attempted to open another locked toolbox located inside the bed of another truck. During the investigation, the subject was taken into custody for the Burglary of a Motor Vehicle and was transported to Central Booking. In addition to other law enforcement actions taken, the officer learned that the subject had two outstanding outside agency arrest warrants. Occurred on: 10-25-07, at 4:06 PM. TRINITY PARKING GARAGE, 1815 Trinity Ave Burglary of Motor Vehicle (Criminal Episode) / Evading Arrest / Resisting Arrest: A UT police officer responded to the 5th level of the Trinity Parking Garage on a report of two vehicles that had been burglarized. During the investigation, the officer heard a loud bang on a lower level. As the investigation continued, the officer observed a non-UT subject throwing a large rock through the window of a parked SUV. The subject then dove into the vehicle through the broken window. The subject looked out of the broken window and saw the police officer standing there. The subject exited the vehicle and attempted to run from the police officer. The officer was able to catch the subject as he attempted to run. The subject was then taken into custody and was transported to a local area hospital and then to Central Booking after being released from the hospital. Occurred on: 10-25-07, at 3:53 PM. 2400 BLOCK SPEEDWAY Driving While Intoxicated: A white Toyota Highlander was observed traveling at a high rate of speed and then running through a stop sign. During the traffic investigation, the officers detected a very strong odor of alcohol on the driver's breath. The driver admitted to the officers that he had been drinking alcohol and simply wanted to park his vehicle and walk home. As the investigation continued, the officers administered the Standardized Field Sobriety tests to the driver. The driver displayed several clues that indicated he was intoxicated. The non-UT driver was taken into custody for Driving While Intoxicated and was transported to Central Booking. Occurred on: 10-26-07, at 3:10 AM. Crime Prevention Tip of the Day: As we have read today, two subjects were caught breaking into vehicles. Both subjects had the desire as well as the ability to commit these criminal acts. The third piece to fall into place for these thieves was the opportunity. Both subjects walked through the parked vehicles looking for property to steal. Take a few minutes and conceal all of your personal property before walking away from your vehicle. CAMPUS WIDE: Non-Criminal Calls: In addition to the above criminal cases, The University of Texas Police Department responded to 12 alarm calls, 4 suspicious activity calls, 5 suspicious persons reports, and 6 unsecured buildings between 10-25-07 and 10-26-07. Contact UT Police at 471-4441 if you have any information regarding any of the above incidents or call 911 regarding suspicious persons, suspicious activities or crime. Your call may help solve or prevent a crime. Campus Watch comments should be directed to Officer Darrell Halstead at 512-232-9634 or Darrell.halstead@austin.utexas.edu .
