CAMPUS WATCH: Below is a summary of campus activity reported to or observed by the University Police Department patrol officers between Wednesday, 11-07-07, and Friday, 11-09-07. LONGHORNS FIGHT'N BACK Next week UTPD will be delivering two pizzas to a couple of UT staff members that assisted the police in the apprehension of a bicycle thief. If you are interested in getting a Free Pizza of your choice, it is as simple as a phone call away. ACES BUILDING, 201 East 24th Street Theft: A blue Averatec laptop computer was stolen from an unsecured cabinet located on the 6th floor. Loss value: $700.00. Occurred between 11-03-07, at 8:30 PM and 11-05-07, at 10:00 AM. Crime Prevention Tip: Recently, a Campus Watch subscriber provided me with the following information about laptop tracking software. Once a computer has been taken, there is software available that can be used to track down the stolen computer. For more information go to http://www.absolute.com/computrace-lojack-for-laptops/notebook-security.asp CAROTHERS DORMITORY, 2501 Whitis Ave Theft: A grey GT mountain bicycle was stolen from the east side of the dormitory after being secured with a self-locking cable lock. Loss value: $300.00. Occurred between 10-31-07 and 11-06-07. JESTER EAST DORMITORY, 203 East 21st Street Public Intoxication: A UT student was discovered passed out near the south entrance into the dormitory. During the investigation, the officers detected a very strong odor of alcohol on the subject's breath and noted that the subject was having difficulty talking. Austin EMS was contacted and treated the student at the scene for alcohol poisoning. It was determined by EMS that that the subject needed to be transported to a local area hospital for additional treatment. Occurred on: 11-09-07, at 2:15 AM. JESTER WEST DORMITORY, 201 East 21st Street Assault on a Public Servant / Theft / Evading Arrest / Assist Outside Agency: Several UT staff members observed a non-UT subject inside the bike racks around Jester Dormitory cutting a bicycle lock. During the investigation, the responding officers observed the subject riding a bike towards the Blanton Museum. The subject refused to stop and was finally stopped when the officers caught him. During the investigation, officers determined that the bicycle that the subject was riding was registered to a current UT student. The student was contacted and he verified that his property had been stolen. As the investigation continued, the officers learned that the subject had an outstanding outside agency felony warrant. The subject was taken into custody and was transported to Central Booking. Occurred on: 11-06-07, at 6:30 AM. Crime Prevention Tip: Congratulations to the Parking and Transportation employees and to the employees from Landscape Services. Everyone did a great job in helping apprehend a theft suspect and the recovery of stolen property. JESTER WEST DORMITORY, 201 East 21st Street Theft: A silver Next mountain bicycle was stolen from the northeast side of the building after being secured with a self-locking cable lock. Loss value: $50.00. Occurred between: 11-05-07 and 11-07-07. JESTER WEST DORMITORY, 201 East 21st Street Suspicious Person / Criminal Trespass Warning: A UT staff member observed a non-UT subject attempt to enter into a restricted area of the dormitory. The subject left the area prior to the arrival of the police officers. During the investigation, the officers located the non-UT subject as she attempted to conceal herself near the north side stairs. As the investigation continued, the subject was issued a written Criminal Trespass Warning and was escorted from the campus. Occurred on: 11-07-07, at 7:30 AM. KINSOLVING DORMITORY, 2605 Whitis Ave. Theft: A Dell laptop computer and Apple iPod Nano were stolen from a first floor dormitory room. During the investigation, the officer learned that a non-UT subject was visiting and had been left inside the dormitory room unattended. Loss value: $1,150.00. Occurred between: 11-06-07, at 11:59 AM and 11-07-07, at 11:30 AM. Crime Prevention Tip: We are trusting individuals by nature. That trusting nature allows a thief the opportunity to commit a crime. Put valuables in an area that can be secured using a keyed padlock. MAIN BUILDING, #1 South Mall Criminal Trespass Warning: A non-UT subject entered a 4th floor lobby requesting to see the president of the university. The subject was issued a written Criminal Trespass Warning and was escorted from the area. Occurred on: 11-06-07, at 6:00 PM. MUSIC RECITAL HALL, 2405 Trinity Theft: A white Apple iPod was stolen after being left unattended inside an unsecured practice room for five minutes. Loss value: $200.00. Occurred on: 11-07-08, between 6:15 PM and 6:20 PM. O' HENRY HALL, 601 Colorado Street Criminal Trespass Warning: A UT staff member discovered a non-UT subject setting up a temporary campsite next to the south porch. During the investigation, the officers issued the subject a written Criminal Trespass Warning and escorted the subject from the area. Occurred on: 11-08-07, at 1:00 AM. PARLIN HALL, 305 East 21st Street Theft: A blue Motiv racing bicycle was stolen from the bike rack located near the building after being secured with a self-locking cable lock. Loss value: $150.00. Occurred on: 11-06-07, between 3:00 PM and 8:00 PM. PARKING LOT 40, 2400 Block Red River Criminal Trespass Warning: A non-UT subject was discovered sleeping next to the parking attendant's kiosk. During the investigation, the subject was issued a written Criminal Trespass Warning and was escorted from the property. Occurred on: 11-08-07, at 5:15 AM. PERRY-CASTANEDA LIBRARY, 101 East 21st Street Assault: A UT student reported that another student had on several occasions touched and attempted to grab her hand. After being told "No" then subject the gave the student an unwanted hug. The student then pushed the subject away and left the area. Occurred on: 11-07-07, at 10:40 AM. Crime Prevention Tip: The University of Texas Police Department offers a women's self defense class RAD. This is a free class that is offered through out the United States at many different universities and colleges. For more information contact the UT Police Department at 471-4441. STUDENT SERVICES BUILDING, 100 West Dean Keeton Criminal Trespass Warning: A UT student attempted to force her way into a restricted area several times in order "to drop off paperwork." The student was told several times that entry was forbidden and that if she continued, the UT Police Department would be notified. The student again attempted to enter into the restricted area and the police were notified. During the investigation, the student was issued a Criminal Trespass Warning and was escorted from the area. Occurred on: 11-05-07, at 3:16 PM. 100 BLOCK EAST DEAN KEETON Driving While Intoxicated: A white Jeep was observed stopped at an intersection long after a traffic light turned green. During the traffic investigation, the officer observed that the driver's head appeared to be leaning to the right side of his body as if he were asleep. After the driver awoke, the officer had the driver exit his vehicle. The officer detected a very strong odor of alcohol inside the passenger compartment of the vehicle and on the driver's breath. As the driver was exiting his vehicle he stated, "I was not driving," to the officer. The officer administered the Standardized Field Sobriety tests to the driver. The driver, a UT student, displayed enough clues that indicated he was intoxicated. The student was taken into custody for Driving While Intoxicated and was transported to Central Booking. Occurred on: 11-09-07, at 3:31 AM. 2200 BLOCK ROBERT DEDMAN Suspicious Person / Assist Outside Agency: A UT staff member discovered a non-UT subject camping out next to the football stadium. During the investigation, the officers soon discovered that the subject had two outstanding outside agency arrest warrants. The subject was taken into custody for the warrants and was transported to Central Booking. In addition to the law enforcement action taken, the subject was issued a written Criminal Trespass Warning. Occurred on: 11-07-07, at 7:50 AM. 2500 BLOCK SAN JACINTO BLVD Public Intoxication: A non-UT subject was discovered passed out. The officers observed the subject attempt to stumble away towards a bus stop. During the investigation, the officers detected a very strong odor of alcohol on the subject's breath and observed that the subject had just completed a bodily function. The subject was unsure as to where he was, but he informed the officers that he was going to Montana, but did not know what bus to take. The subject was taken into custody for Public Intoxication and was transported to Central Booking. Occurred on: 11-07-08, at 5:17 PM. CAMPUS WIDE: Non-Criminal Calls: In addition to the above criminal cases, The University of Texas Police Department responded to 28 reported alarms, 8 suspicious activity calls, 9 suspicious persons reports, 5 medical emergencies, and 15 unsecured buildings between 11-07-07 and 11-09-07.
