CAMPUS WATCH: Below is a summary of campus activity reported to or observed by the University Police Department patrol officers between Friday, 11-09-07 and Monday, 11-12-07. * * * * SCAM ALERT * * * * * The following scam was received by a Campus Watch subscriber. The type of scam is an old version of the "Nigerian Letter." This time, the con artist is not only pretending to be from the Red Cross but is also pretending to be an American military soldier currently assigned in Iraq. Here is the Scam: You can now email me at: redcross_society_delivers@yahoo.com FROM: Sgt. Brooks Fitte - FROM: Sgt. Brooks Fitte .Important Message.Dear,My name is Brooks Fitte , I am an American soldier, I am serving in the military of the 1st Armored Division in Iraq, As you know we are being attacked by insurgents everyday and car bombs.We managed to move funds belonging to Saddam Hussien's family. The total amount is US$25 Million dollars in cash, mostly 100 dollar bills. We want to move this money to you, so that you may invest it for us and keep our share for banking.We will take 50%, my partner and I. You take the other 50%. no strings attached, just help us move it out of Iraq, Iraq is a warzone. We plan on using diplomatic courier and shipping the money out in one large silver box, using diplomatic immunity.If you are interested I will send you the full details, my job is to find a good partner that we can trust and that will assist us.Can I trust you? When you receive this letter,kindly send me an e-mail signifying your interest including your most confidential telephone/fax numbers for quick communication also your contact details. This business is risk free.The box can be shipped out in 48hrs.Respectfully,Sgt. Brooks Fitte If you receive these types of emails, you can report them to your police department. Whatever you do, Do not respond to these types of scams. This allows the con artist to know that your email address is active. BELMONT HALL, 2109 San Jacinto blvd Possession of Alcohol by a Minor: A UT student attempted to use a fraudulent driver's license to obtain an alcoholic drink during the Texas football game. The subject was denied service by the bartender. A short time later a UT staff member discovered that the UT student was in possession of an adult beverage and notified the UT police officer working that event. The officer verified the student was under the legal age of 21. The student was issued a field release citation for Possession of Alcohol by a Minor and was escorted out of the event. Occurred on: 11-10-07, at 3:30 PM. DKR-TEXAS MEMORIAL STADIUM, 405 East 23rd Street Theft: A UT student was observed picking up a tan leather football that was embossed with a double T and placing it inside his tuba. The Texas Department of Public Safety Trooper that witnessed the theft stopped the student and removed the football from the bell portion of his tuba. As the investigation continued, the officers soon learned from the Texas Tech equipment manager that two additional footballs had also been stolen. During a search the missing footballs were located and recovered. The Texas Tech manager declined to file charges but requested that the student be referred to the Dean of Student's Office. Loss value: $45.00 (Recovered) Occurred on: 11-10-07, at 4:40 PM. DKR-TEXAS MEMORIAL STADIUM, 405 East 23rd Street Public Intoxication: Five UT students were arrested for Public Intoxication during the Texas / Texas Tech football game. All five students were taken into custody for Public Intoxication and were transported to Central Booking. Occurred on 11-10-07 between 2:30 PM and 6:30 PM. DKR-TEXAS MEMORIAL STADIUM, 405 East 23rd Street Possession of Alcohol by a Minor: A UT student was observed attempting to enter the stadium with a flask in his pants pocket. The flask contained an alcoholic beverage. The officer soon learned that the student was under the legal age of 21, and was unauthorized to be in possession of adult beverages. The student was issued a field release citation along with a referral to the Dena of Student's Office. Occurred on: 11-10-07, at 3:03 PM. JESTER WEST DORMITORY, 201 East 21st Street Assault: A UT student reported being assaulted by a non-UT subject and a second unknown subject. During the investigation, the officer observed that the victim was bleeding from a swollen and cut lower lip. The officers learned that the non-UT subject and unknown subject had left the dormitory prior to their arrival. The victim refused to file charges on either subject. Occurred on: 11-11-07, at 5:12 AM. SAN JACINTO PARKING GARAGE, 2401 San Jacinto Blvd Burglary of Motor Vehicle: A HD LCD television was stolen from inside a 1999 Chevy Tahoe that was parked on the top level of the garage. Loss value: $500.00. Occurred on: 11-10-07, between 2:00 PM and 6:30 PM. 700 BLOCK COLORADO STREET Public Intoxication: A UT staff member observed a subject staggering, whirling, and falling as he attempted to navigate between his directional beacons. During the investigation, the officer witnessed the non-UT subject walk head first into a tree. The subject got up and informed the officer that he was not feeling any pain. The officer detected a very strong odor of alcohol on the subject's breath. Austin EMS treated the subject at the scene and released him back to the officer. The subject was then transported to Central Booking for Public Intoxication. Occurred on: 11-11-07, at 3:14 AM. 1500 BLOCK TRINITY Driving While Intoxicated: A UT police officer observed a white Yukon traveling the wrong way on a posted one-way street. During the traffic investigation, the officer detected a very strong odor of alcohol on the driver's breath even though the driver was chewing a stick of gum. The driver informed the officer that she had consumed two Red Bull and Vodka drinks prior to driving home. The officer administered the Standardized Field Sobriety tests to the driver. The driver displayed clues that indicated she was intoxicated. The officer took the driver into custody for Driving While Intoxicated. The driver insistently informed the officer that she was over forty years old, as well as a mother, and that she was not too intoxicated to drive. The driver was transported to Central Booking. Occurred on: 11-11-07, at 1:50 AM. 2100 BLOCK Guadalupe Driving While Intoxicated / Public Intoxication: A red Mitsubishi was observed traveling without its headlamps turned on. The officer observed the front seat passenger open the passenger's door and lean out as if having an extreme physical reaction to the over consumption of alcohol. During the traffic investigation, the officer detected a very strong odor of alcohol on the driver's breath and inside the vehicle. The officer administered the Standardized Field Sobriety tests to the UT student driver. The driver displayed several clues that indicated that she was intoxicated. The driver was taken into custody for Driving While Intoxicated. As the investigation continued, the officers determined that the passenger was also intoxicated to a point that he was a danger to himself. The passenger was taken into custody for Public Intoxication and was also transported to Central Booking. Occurred on: 11-11-07, at 12:40 AM. 2200 BLOCK SPEEDWAY Public Intoxication: A UT police officer observed a subject staggering and stumbling as he attempted to walk. During the investigation, the non-UT subject told the officer that he was going to walk to the Fiji House then changed his mind since he could not remember how to get there. The officer detected a very strong odor of alcohol on the subject's breath and noted that his eyes were bloodshot. The subject was taken into custody for Public Intoxication and was transported to Central Booking. Occurred on: 11-11-07, at 2:28 AM. 2300 BLOCK SAN JACINTO BLVD Criminal Trespass Warning: A non-UT subject was discovered digging through the trashcans and making a mess. The subject was issued a written Criminal Trespass Warning and was escorted from the campus area. Occurred on: 11-10-07, at 10:35 PM. 2400 BLOCK SAN JACINTO BLVD Public Intoxication: A UT staff member observed a UT student staggering and making a gallant fight against Earth's gravity. During the investigation, the officer located the student embracing a Stop Sign pole. The officer asked the student if she knew why the police were talking to her. The student replied, "Because I look like a drunk chick hugging a pole." The officer did detect a very strong odor of alcohol on the subject's breath and noted that the subject slurred her words when responding to questions. The subject did not know where she lived or where her personal property was. The subject was taken into custody for Public Intoxication and was transported to Central Booking. Occurred on: 11-10-07, at 7:58 PM. CAMPUS WIDE: Non-Criminal Calls: In addition to the above criminal cases, The University of Texas Police Department responded to 37 reported alarms, 10 suspicious activity calls, 15 suspicious persons reports, 5 medical emergencies, and 15 unsecured buildings between 11-09-07 and 11-12-07.
