Crime Prevention Tip of the Day: Tomorrow many of us will be heading home for Thanksgiving. Some will be traveling to different parts of the United States, and others will be traveling across Texas. I would like to remind everyone that the Texas Department of Public Safety like UTPD is only a telephone call away. UTPD has recommended everyone to program ICE as well as the main telephone number to UTPD into their telephones. I am asking that everyone consider incorporating *DPS. This is the non-emergency number for DPS. You can call *DPS or (*377) for Non-Life Threatening Situations. The Texas Department of Public Safety and Alltel, Nextel, AT&T Wireless and Verizon have established *DPS or (*377), as a statewide wireless phone number for Texas motorists to use when reporting non-life threatening situations on Texas roads and highways. This is free of airtime charges in Texas and is similar to the DPS Roadside Assistance number, 1-800-525-5555. Examples of when a motorist should dial *DPS or (*377) include: • stranded with car problems, • hazardous road conditions, or • reporting suspicious activity at a rest area. This does not replace 911 as an emergency number. Have a safe Thanksgiving. CAMPUS WIDE: Non-Criminal Calls: In addition to the above criminal cases, The University of Texas Police Department responded to 50 reported alarms, 11 suspicious activity calls, 9 suspicious persons reports, and 26 unsecured buildings between 11-16-07 and 11-20-07. Contact UT Police at 471-4441 if you have any information regarding any of the above incidents or call 911 regarding suspicious persons, suspicious activities or crime. Your call may help solve or prevent a crime. Campus Watch comments should be directed to Officer Darrell Halstead at 512-232-9634 or Darrell.halstead@austin.utexas.edu .
