CAMPUS WATCH: Below is a summary of campus activity reported to or observed by the University Police Department patrol officers between Thursday, 12-13-07 and Friday, 12-14-07. Occurred on: 12-14-07, at 12:55 AM. Crime Prevention Tip of the Day: 'Tis the season to be jolly, but it is also the season to be wary of burglars, thieves, pickpockets, and other holiday grinches. Nothing can ruin the Christmas spirit faster than becoming the victim of a crime. Today there are 11 shopping days left before Christmas, and as you can see in today's issue of the Campus Watch, the thieves are out filling their Christmas wish lists as well. The following are a few strategies that will help you enjoy the holidays, we hope, without incident. Be extra cautious about locking doors and windows when you leave your house or apartment, even for a few minutes. Unfortunately burglars view the holiday season a little differently…for them, it is a time of opportunity to burglarize your home for cash, credit cards, and gifts. Don’t advertise …Burglars look for occupancy cues like outdoor lights burning 24 hours a day, piled up newspapers, mail, or advertising flyers hanging on the door knob. Burglars know to look for the hidden door key near the front entrance. Don’t hide spare keys under rocks, in flowerpots, or above door ledges. Instead give the spare key to a trusted neighbor. Don’t leave descriptive telephone answering machine messages like, “You’ve reached the _______…we’re away skiing for the Christmas holidays…please leave a message.” Bad guys love to hear that they have plenty of time to break in and completely ransack your home. CAMPUS WIDE: Non-Criminal Calls: In addition to the above criminal cases, The University of Texas Police Department responded to 14 reported alarms, 2 suspicious activity calls, 3 suspicious persons reports, and 5 unsecured buildings between 12-13-07 and 12-14-07. Contact UT Police at 471-4441 if you have any information regarding any of the above incidents or call 911 regarding suspicious persons, suspicious activities or crime. Your call may help solve or prevent a crime. Campus Watch comments should be directed to Officer Darrell Halstead at 512-232-9634 or Darrell.halstead@austin.utexas.edu .
