CAMPUS WATCH: Below is a summary of campus activity reported to or observed by the University Police Department patrol officers between Wednesday, 01-30-08 and Monday, 02-04-08. * * * * * SCAM ALERT * * * * * The following scam information was sent in by a Campus Watch subscriber. The University of Texas ITS department verified the subscriber's information as a scam. E-mail messages claiming to be from "UTEXAS Team" and titled "VERIFY YOUR UTEXAS EMAIL ACCOUNT NOW " began appearing in e-mail boxes over the weekend. These e-mails did not come from UT-Austin, and appear to be part of one of many active phishing scams. Anyone who receives these e-mails should delete them, and should not respond to them. * * * *THE SCAM * * * * VERIFY YOUR UTEXES EMAIL ACCOUNT NOW Dear utexas Email Account Owner, This message is from utexas messaging center to all utexas email account owners. We are currently upgrading our data base and e-mail account center. We are deleting all unused utexas email account to create more space for new accounts. To prevent your account from closing you will have to update it below so that we will know that it's a present used account. CONFIRM YOUR EMAIL IDENTITY BELOW Email Username : .......... ..... The academy provides a great opportunity to take an inside look at how police departments function, and it will give you a chance to learn how to assist local law enforcement and make yourself safer. Over the course of the program, you will visit a variety of units within The University of Texas at Austin Police Department and meet with officers who will teach you about criminal investigations, patrol procedures, special response teams, and much more. The Citizen Police Academy is open to the public, and will meet 6-9 p.m. on Mondays from February 18 - April 7. Enrollment is free, but space is limited, so download and complete an application (PDF) as soon as possible. The application submission deadline is February 11, 2007. COLLEGE OF BUSINESS ADMINISTRATION, 2110 Speedway Attempted Burglary: A UT police officer discovered pry marks and a damaged door leading into a 6th floor office. Loss value: Unknown at this time. Discovered on: 1-30-08, at 5:20 PM. COMPUTATION CENTER, #1 East Mall Theft: A Hewlett-Packard PDA digital cellular telephone and charger were stolen from an unsecured first floor office after being left in plain view. Loss value: $200.00. Occurred between: 1-10-08 and 1-11-08. GATEWAY APARTMENTS, 1600 Block West 6th Street Criminal Trespass Warning: A non-UT subject was discovered sleeping near the entrance into the apartment complex. During the investigation, the subject informed the officers that he was on a "walkabout" tour of the USA. The subject was issued a written Criminal Trespass Warning and was escorted from the area so that he could continue his "walkabout." Occurred on: 2-03-08, at 4:41 AM. JESTER WEST DORMITORY, 201 East 21st Street Theft: Tekro break parts were stolen from a black Raleigh mountain bicycle that was secured to the bike racks located on the southwest portion of the building. Loss value: $20.00. Occurred on: 2-02-08, between 12:01 PM and 6:00 PM. JESTER WEST DORMITORY, 201 East 21st Street Suspicious Person: A UT student observed an unknown subject pounding on different dormitory doors and "jiggling" the door of the women's restroom. During the investigation, the officers searched the area with negative results. The unknown subject was described as: White male, college age, and was last seen wearing a red shirt. Occurred on: 2-02-08, at 5:16 PM. LYNDON B. JOHNSON LIBRARY, 2305 Robert Dedman Dr. Criminal Trespass Warning (2 Counts): Two non-UT subjects were discovered walking around inside a construction area. During the investigation, both subjects stated that they were simply walking down memory lane. The officer issued both subjects written Criminal Trespass Warnings and escorted them from the area. Occurred on: 2-03-08, at 11:03 PM. PARKING LOT 104, 1900 Block North IH-35 Assist Outside Agency: A non-UT subject was discovered staggering along the roadway. During the investigation, the officer soon discovered that the subject had an outstanding outside agency arrest warrant for Aggressive Solicitation. The subject was taken into custody and was transported to Central Booking. Aggressive Solicitation is no longer an available option. Occurred on: 2-04-08, at 2:00 AM. REC SPORTS CENTER, 2001 San Jacinto Blvd. Theft: A black leather credit card holder containing several credit cards and personal identification was stolen from inside a closed backpack. The backpack was left unsecured inside a 2nd floor classroom. Loss value: $5.00. Occurred on: 1-30-08, between 12:01 PM and 1:00 PM. SAN ANTONIO PARKING GARAGE, 2420 San Antonio Street Criminal Trespass Warning (5 Counts): A UT staff member heard the sound of breaking glass on the top floor of the parking garage. During the investigation, UT police officers discovered five subjects on the top floor. The officers also observed broken glass bottles in the same area. All five subjects were issued written Criminal Trespass Warnings and were escorted from the area. Occurred on: 2-03-08, at 4:12 PM. SAN ANTONIO PARKING GARAGE, 2420 San Antonio Street Criminal Trespass Warning: A non-UT subject was discovered sleeping just outside an elevator. During the investigation, the subject was issued a written Criminal Trespass Warning and was escorted from the area. Occurred on: 1-31-08, at 6:02 AM. SERVICE BUILDING, 304 East 24th Street Criminal Trespass Warning: A non-UT subject was observed stopping staff members and asking them for food as well as money. During the investigation, the officer explained to the subject where he could obtain assistance. As the investigation continued, the subject was issued a written Criminal Trespass Warning and was escorted from the campus area. Occurred on: 1-30-08, at 9:37 PM. SUTTON HALL, 210 West 21st Street Criminal Trespass Warning / Possession of Marijuana: A non-UT subject was discovered setting up a campsite on the north side of the building. As the officer approached the subject, the subject made a furtive move to discard an item behind his back. The officer determined that the item was a hand rolled marijuana cigarette. During the investigation, the officer issued the subject a field release citation for Possession of Marijuana. In addition to the law enforcement action taken, the subject was issued a written Criminal Trespass Warning and was escorted from the property. Occurred on: 2-04-08, at 3:50 AM. WINSHIP DRAMA BUILDING, 300 East 23rd Street Suspicious Person: A UT staff member observed an unknown subject enter the building and head towards the upper floor. During the investigation, the officers searched the area with negative results. The unknown subject was described as a black male, 50 years of age, 5'-11", and 150 pounds. Occurred on: 1-30-08, at 9:03 PM. WINSHIP DRAMA BUILDING, 300 East 23rd Street Theft: A UT student observed a non-UT subject inside the men's locker room, located on the second floor, wearing a pair of tennis shoes that resemble the same ones that had been stolen from the student. The student located the building manager, and the manager discovered the UT student's duffle bag inside a locker that the non-UT subject was using. During the investigation, the officer discovered a Criminal Trespass Warning inside the locker that had been issued by the City of Austin Police Department with the suspect's name on it. The UT student declined to file charges. Loss value: $100.00. (Recovered). Reported on: 1-30-08, at 4:00 PM. 2400 BLOCK WHITIS AVE Driving While Intoxicated: A red Ford truck was observed stopped at the intersection of 24th Street and Whitis Ave. The officer noticed that the driver's head was resting on the window and the driver appeared to be unconscious. After several minutes of rapping on the window, the driver finally awoke. As the investigation continued, the officer detected a very strong odor of alcohol on the driver's breath and noted that the driver's eyes were bloodshot. The officer administered the Standardized Field Sobriety tests to the UT driver. The subject displayed several clues that indicated he was intoxicated. The subject was taken into custody for Driving While Intoxicated and was transported to Central Booking. Occurred on: 2-03-08, at 5:30 AM. CAMPUS WIDE: Non-Criminal Calls: In addition to the above criminal cases, The University of Texas Police Department responded to 28 alarm calls, 13 suspicious activity calls, 9 suspicious person calls, and 18 unsecured door reports between 01-30-08 and 02-04-08.
