CAMPUS WATCH: Below is a summary of campus activity reported to or observed by the University Police Department patrol officers between Friday, 02-08-08 and Monday, 02-11-08. Citizen Police Academy February 18 - April 7, 2008 The Citizen Police Academy is enrolling now! The academy provides a great opportunity to take an inside look at how police departments function, and it will give you a chance to learn how to assist local law enforcement and make yourself safer. Over the course of the program, you will visit a variety of units within The University of Texas at Austin Police Department and meet with officers who will teach you about criminal investigations, patrol procedures, special response teams, and much more. The Citizen Police Academy is open to the public, and will meet 6-9 p.m. on Mondays from February 18 - April 7. Enrollment is free, but space is limited, so download and complete an application (PDF) as soon as possible. The application submission deadline is February 11, 2007. BELMONT HALL, 2109 San Jacinto Blvd Theft: A UT student reported the theft of $100.00 in US currency from his wallet from a fifth floor gym. The wallet had been left inside a pair of pants, but the pants had been left unsecured. Loss value: $100.00. Occurred on: 2-07-08, between 3:00 PM and 4:30 PM. GEOLOGY BUILDING, #10 East Mall Burglary: A UT student discovered the glass insert of a fifth floor office door broken and several items missing from the secured office. During the investigation, the officer learned that an external Sony DVD drive, Cannon EOS camera, Nikon 4500 camera, and a Toshiba laptop computer had been stolen. As the investigation continued, the officer learned that several students had seen two suspicious subjects that appeared to be lost, wandering the hall. The first unknown subject was described as: white female, 5'-6", thin build, last seen wearing a dress. This subject was walking barefoot, carrying her shoes. The second unknown subject was described as: White male, 5'-9" with a medium build, last seen wearing glasses. Loss value: $1,200.00. Occurred between: 2-09-08, at 7:30 PM and 2-10-08, at 4:15 PM. JESTER EAST DORMITORY, 203 East 21st Street Burglary of Habitation: A UT student discovered $20.00 in US currency missing from his wallet after leaving his wallet inside a secured 5th floor dormitory room. Loss value: $20.00. Occurred on: 2-10-08, between 8:10 PM and 9:00 PM. KINSOLVING DORMITORY, 2605 Whitis Ave Public Intoxication: A UT was reported having difficulty breathing. During the investigation, the officers soon learned that the UT student had been having several episodes of extreme physical reactions to the overconsumption of alcohol and her body was attempting to purge itself. Austin EMS was notified and treated the subject for alcohol poisoning at the scene. The subject was not transported to a local area hospital but she did receive a referral to the Dean of Student's Office. Occurred on: 2-09-08, at 3:41 AM. PARKING LOT 27, 2600 Block Whitis Ave Burglary of Motor Vehicle: A UT student discovered the right front passenger's window of his Chevy broken out and his KD-HDR stereo missing. Loss value: $200.00. Occurred between: 2-07-08, at 12:15 PM and 2-08-08, at 11:05 AM. PARKING LOT 114, 2100 Block Comal Criminal Trespass Warning / Assist Outside Agency: A non-UT subject was observed riding a bicycle in slow circles around several parked vehicles inside the parking lot. The subject would stop and look into a parked vehicle then continue riding in slow circles. During the investigation, the subject stated that he was simply riding around. As the investigation continued, the officer soon learned that the subject had an outstanding outside agency arrest warrant. The subject was taken into custody. During a search of the subject, the officers discovered that the subject had in his possession several screwdrivers and a pair of pliers. The subject was transported to Central Booking and was released to Central Booking personnel. In addition to the law enforcement action taken, the subject was issued a written Criminal Trespass Warning. Occurred on: 2-09-08, at 4:15 PM. PERRY-CASTANEDA LIBRARY, 101 East 21st Street Theft: A Sony Vaio laptop computer was stolen from the 6th floor after the former owner left the property unattended for two minutes. Loss value: $1,200.00. Occurred on: 2-10-08, between 3:18 PM and 3:20 PM. Crime Prevention Tip: This is an ongoing problem inside PCL and all of the other libraries on campus. Thieves will sit down and wait for an individual to get up and leave their property unattended for just a short time. In this case, two minutes. At other times the thief will simply walk around until they discover property that has been left unattended. To defeat the thief, take your property with you, or ask a friend to watch over your property until you return. UNION BUILDING, #4 West Mall Criminal Trespass Warning: A non-UT subject was observed punching the wall next to the computer stations located on the second floor. During the investigation, the officers noted that the subject was very upset and confrontational towards them. The officers soon learned that the subject was not a current staff member or a university student. The subject was issued a written Criminal Trespass Warning and was escorted from the building. Occurred on: 2-10-08, at 8:43 PM. WINSHIP DRAMA BUILDING, 300 East 23rd Street Criminal Trespass Warning: A UT professor observed a non-UT subject inside a first floor men's restroom showering and shaving. During the investigation, the officers located the subject in the same area. The subject informed the officers that he was auditioning for a "Dynasty" type production but could not provide any further information. As the investigation continued, the officers learned that the production was at a local church and was not a UT function. The subject was issued a criminal trespass warning and was escorted from the area. Occurred on: 2-09-08, at 11:54 AM. Crime Prevention Tip: The UT professor did a great job in notifying the police about the suspicious nature of the non-UT subject. This is the same area of Winship that several reported thefts have occurred recently. 100 BLOCK WEST 21st STREET Consumption of Alcohol by a Minor (2 Counts): A UT police officer observed two non-UT subjects attempting to walk a straight path to their intended destination. The officer observed that one subject was wearing a torn shirt and was expanding his vocabulary with proper diction when stopped by the police officer. During the investigation, the officer detected a moderate odor of alcohol on both subjects. Both subjects informed the officers that they had succumbed to peer pressure and attended UT fraternity party at 27th and Whitis. The officers soon discovered that both subjects were under the legal age of 21 and were issued field release citations for Consumption of Alcohol by a Minor. Both subjects were released at the scene. Occurred on: 2-09-08, at 3:40 AM. 400 BLOCK EAST 20th STREET Consumption of Alcohol by a Minor: A non-UT subject was observed swaying back and forth while wearing torn shorts. During the investigation, the officers soon detected a moderate odor of alcohol on the subject's breath. The officers learned that the subject was under the legal age of 21 and had been consuming alcohol. The subject was issued a field release citation for Consumption of Alcohol by a Minor. Occurred on: 2-09-08, at 4:01 AM. 2300 BLOCK SAN JACINTO BLVD Driving While Intoxicated: A UT police officer observed a red Chevy truck traveling left of the center stripe. During the traffic investigation, the officer detected a moderate odor of alcohol on the driver's breath and noted that the driver's eyes were bloodshot and watery. During the investigation, the officer administered the Standardized Field Sobriety tests to the UT student driver. The driver displayed several clues that indicated that he was intoxicated. The driver was taken into custody for Driving While Intoxicated and was transported to Central Booking. Occurred on: 2-10-08, at 4:38 AM. 2400 BLOCK WHITIS AVE Public Intoxication: A UT student was discovered passed out on the sidewalk. The officer detected a very strong odor of alcohol on the subject. After waking the subject up, the subject had to excuse himself for a moment and began providing alcohol enriched compost to the UT landscape. As the investigation resumed, the officer noted that the subject was confused as to where he was. The student was taken into custody for Public Intoxication and was transported to Central Booking. Occurred on: 2-09-08, at 1:28 AM. 2500 BLOCK GUADALUPE Public Intoxication: A non-UT subject was discovered lying unconscious next to Walter Webb Hall. The officer observed two broken wine bottles next to the subject, along with an open 12-pack of beer. During the investigation, the officer was able to wake the subject and noted that the subject was confused and was unable to maintain his balance. The subject was unable to form words to communicate with the officer. The officer detected a very strong odor of alcohol on the subject and observed several signs that the subject was intoxicated. The subject was taken into custody for Public Intoxication and was transported to Central Booking. Occurred on: 2-10-08, at 2:30 AM. 2500 BLOCK SAN JACINTO BLVD Public intoxication: A UT police officer observed a UT student having trouble maintaining his balance. The subject fell while attempting to cross a small wooden bridge and remained in a prone position, then got up and attempted to run as the officer was approaching him. The subject stopped and the officer recognized the subject from a prior arrest earlier in the week and noted that the subject was now bleeding from his fall. The officer again detected a very strong odor of alcohol on the subject's breath and noted that the subject's eyes were bloodshot and watery. Austin EMS treated the subject at the scene. Just prior to being transported to a local area hospital, the subject was issued a field release citation for Public Intoxication. Occurred on: 2-08-08, at 6:33 AM. CAMPUS WIDE: Non-Criminal Calls: In addition to the above criminal cases, The University of Texas Police Department responded to 28 alarm calls, 5 suspicious activity calls, 5 suspicious person calls, 2 collision reports, 5 medical emergencies, and 5 unsecured door reports between 02-08-08 and 02-11-08.
