CAMPUS WATCH: Below is a summary of campus activity reported to or observed by the University Police Department patrol officers between Friday, 02-15-08 and Tuesday 02- 19-08. The University of Texas Police Department would like to express our heartfelt sorrow to the families and friends of the students and staff at Northern Illinois University. Our thoughts are with you. APPLIED RESEARCH LABS, 10,000 Burnet Road Harassment: A UT staff member reported receiving several harassing and annoying telephone calls on her personal cellular telephone. Occurred on: 2-18-08, between 5:44 AM and 9:47 AM. BATTLE HALL, #1 West Mall Theft: A blue Schwinn mountain bicycle was stolen from the bike racks locked on the south side of the building after being secured with a self-locking cable lock. Loss value: $150.00. Occurred between: 2-13-08 and 2-17-08. BRIDGEWAY, 2616 Wichita Criminal Mischief: A UT staff member discovered a broken window inside a first floor office. During the investigation, the officer discovered a rock lying on the desk inside the office. Loss value: $25.00. Occurred between: 2-15-08 and 2-18-08. CENTENNIAL PARK, 1600 Red River Criminal Trespass Warning: A non-UT subject was discovered sleeping in a temporary campsite. During the investigation, the officers issued the subject a written Criminal Trespass Warning and escorted him from the area. Occurred on: 2-16-08, at 9:20 AM. DISCH-FALK FIELD, 1300 Martin Luther King Blvd Criminal Mischief: A 12-inch by 12-inch cut was discovered in the right field fence. Loss value: Unknown at this time. Discovered on: 2-15-08, at 1:50 PM. GEOLOGY BUILDING, #10 East Mall Burglary: A Dell laptop case, laptop power cord, and $25.00 in US currency were stolen from a secured 4th floor office. Loss value: $75.00. Occurred between: 2-15-08 and 2-18-08. JESTER WEST DORMITORY, 201 East 21st Street Criminal Trespass Warning: A non-UT subject was discovered selling pre-packaged food to the residents inside the dormitory. During the investigation, the officers learned that the subject also had three juveniles assisting him in the sales. The officers issued the subject a written Criminal Trespass Warning and escorted the subject and three juveniles from the building. Occurred on: 2-16-08, at 5:45 PM. Crime Prevention Tip: During this investigation, the officers learned that the subjects had gained entry into a restricted area after an unidentified student gave them access. If a person is attempting to follow you into a restricted area (dormitory living areas are restricted), notify the police department. We love talking to these individuals. JESTER WEST DORMITORY, 201 East 21st Street Criminal Trespass: A non-UT subject was discovered inside a restricted area rocking back and forth while typing on a computer keyboard. During the investigation, the officers learned that the subject had received several prior written criminal trespass warnings for a number of buildings located on campus. The subject was taken into custody for Criminal Trespass and was transported to Central Booking. Occurred on: 2-16-08, at 4:40 PM. PERRY-CASTANEDA LIBRARY, 101 East 21st Street Criminal Trespass Warning: A non-UT subject began causing a disturbance with a UT student who had refused to allow the non-UT subject to use her cellular telephone. During the investigation, the officers issued the subject a written Criminal Trespass Warning and escorted her from the building. Occurred on: 2-16-08, at 2:25 AM. PETER T. FLAWN ACADEMIC CENTER, #2 West Mall Criminal Trespass: A non-UT subject was discovered inside a restricted area staring at a computer screen. During the investigation, the officer soon learned that the subject had received two prior criminal trespass warnings for FAC and another area on campus. The subject was taken into custody for Criminal Trespass and was transported to Central Booking. Occurred on: 2-18-08, at 3:58 AM. UNIVERSITY TEACHING CENTER, 1105 West 21st Street Criminal Trespass Warning: A non-UT subject was observed entering into a restricted area. During the investigation, the officers learned that the subject was not a current student or employed by the University of Texas. The subject was issued a written Criminal Trespass Warning and was escorted from the area. Occurred on: 2-19-08, at 5:01 AM. WAGGENER HALL, 2210 Speedway Burglary: A Dell laptop computer and case was reported stolen from a secured 2nd floor office. Loss value: $800.00. Occurred on: 2-16-08, between 2:00 PM and 3:30 PM. 200 BLOCK EAST 21st STREET Consumption of Alcohol by a Minor / Public Intoxication: A UT police officer observed a UT student attempting to help a non-UT subject navigate the straight contours of a sidewalk. During the investigation, the UT student became upset with the officers and told them how much he hated UT and how much he wanted to leave. As the investigation continued, the officers noted that the non-UT subject could not maintain her balance. The officer soon learned that the UT student was under the legal age of 21 and had been consuming alcohol. The non-UT subject displayed numerous signs of intoxication. The UT student was issued a field release citation for Consumption of Alcohol by a Minor. The non- UT subject was taken into custody for Public Intoxication and was transported to Central Booking. Occurred on: 2-17-08, at 3:19 AM. 2300 BLOCK TRINITY Burglary of Motor Vehicle: A UT student discovered several CDs lying on the ground outside of his parked and unsecured vehicle. During the investigation, the officers learned there was additional property missing from the vehicle, which included the faceplate to a Pioneer AM / FM stereo, subwoofer and a 6-oz bottle of cologne. Loss value: $150.00. Occurred between: 2-16-08, at 6:00 PM and 2-17-08, at 1:40 PM. 2500 BLOCK SPEEDWAY Suspicious Activity: A UT student observed an unknown subject standing inside the bike racks located on the northeast side of RLM. The unknown subject was using a small pair of wire cutters to remove a thin self-locking cable lock from a secured bicycle. The unknown subject was described as: Hispanic male, 5'-10", 190 lbs. with large brown eyes. The unknown subject was last seen wearing an orange UT shirt, black vest, and white tennis shoes. During the investigation, the officers searched the area with negative results. Occurred on: 2-18-08, at 9:00 PM. Crime Prevention Tip: Kudos to this student that took the time to contact the police to report the suspicious activity that he had witnessed. Bicycle thefts still remain a problem at UT and within the City of Austin. Many of these bicycles that are stolen at UT are not registered with Parking and Transportation. Take the time to go online and register your bicycle with Parking and Transportation. This small investment of your time will help in the recovery of your property if it is stolen. Just ask some of the students that live in Jester that had their bicycles returned to them after having the bicycles stolen. 2600 BLOCK GUADALUPE Public Intoxication: A non-UT subject was observed staggering and swaying back and forth as he attempted to walk along the sidewalk. During the investigation, the officers detected a very strong odor of alcohol on the subject's breath and noted that he needed support to maintain his balance. The subject was taken into custody for Public Intoxication and was transported to Central Booking. Occurred on: 2-19-08, at 2:43 AM. 2600 BLOCK WHITIS AVE Driving While Intoxicated: A black Jeep was observed committing several traffic violations. During the traffic investigation, the officer detected a very strong odor of alcohol on the UT student driver's breath. The officer noted that the driver's eyes were bloodshot and watery. During the investigation, the officer administered the Standardized Field Sobriety tests to the driver. The driver's intoxication level was very apparent as he attempted to perform the tests. The driver was taken into custody for Driving While Intoxicated and was transported to Central Booking. Occurred on: 2-17-08, at 2:45 AM. Crime Prevention Tip of the Day: The University of Texas Police Department is requesting your assistance. We are asking all students, staff members, and faculty to notify UTPD when you witness any suspicious person or suspicious activity in or around the campus area. You can notify the UT police department at 512-471-4441. CAMPUS WIDE: Non-Criminal Calls: In addition to the above criminal cases, The University of Texas Police Department responded to 48 alarm calls, 8 suspicious activity calls, 9 suspicious person calls, 4 medical emergencies, and 18 unsecured door reports between 02-15-08 and 02-19-08.
