Crime Prevention Tip of the Day: Spring Break is quickly approaching and there are planned activities that will stagger the average person. Most of the staggering will occur at the beach parties, concerts, and more beach parties. Other agencies will eclipse the number of calls received by the police. Local Fire Departments and EMS services will be receiving a number of emergency calls for alcohol poisoning. Many of the reported student deaths during spring break have been attributed to alcohol. DWIs and alcohol poisoning lead the way. Take a minute to recognize the signs of alcohol poisoning. Cut out this Sam Spady card and take it with you. During Spring Break there is always a higher risk of sexual assault due mainly to the larger population of intoxicated students. The following is a reminder from the UT Voices Against Violence: Consent IS: • -Based on choice • -Active, not passive • -Only possible when there is equal power • -Giving your permission by saying yes • -Negotiable at each stage: yes to one thing does not indicate yes to everything If an intoxicated person cannot give consent to medical staff, then how can an intoxicated person consent to a sexual relationship? Consent Is NOT: • -Giving in because of fear • -Based on manipulation, deception or lying • -Possible when one person has more power • -Possible if one person is under the influence of alcohol or drugs Giggling, changing the subject or squirming away does not communicate YES or NO. To give your permission, you must be able to say: YES or NO without pressure. Come back with a Spring Break story for your friends, not a confession for your parents. CAMPUS WIDE: Non-Criminal Calls: In addition to the above criminal cases, The University of Texas Police Department responded to 21 alarm calls, 4 medical emergencies, 1 collision report, and 13 unsecured door reports between 02-29-08 and 03-03-08. Contact UT Police at 471-4441 if you have any information regarding any of the above incidents or call 911 regarding suspicious persons, suspicious activities or crime. Your call may help solve or prevent a crime. Campus Watch comments should be directed to Officer Darrell Halstead at 512-232-9634 or Darrell.halstead@austin.utexas.edu .
