CAMPUS WATCH: Below is a summary of campus activity reported to or observed by the University Police Department patrol officers between Monday, 03-03-08 and Tuesday, 03-11-08. ALUMNI CENTER, 2110 San Jacinto Blvd Possession of Alcohol by a Minor / Consumption of Alcohol by a Minor / Evading Arrest or Detention: Three UT students wearing dark clothing were observed climbing onto a statue. After all three students reached the top of the statue officers heard the sound of metal hitting metal. As the police vehicles approached, all three students took off running. As the police vehicles got closer, the students tried to run faster and harder. One student, attempted to hide behind a dumpster. The other two students attempted to hide near the Gregory Gym Aquatics Center. All three students were taken into custody for Evading Arrest or Detention. As the investigation continued, the officers soon discovered that the students had been consuming alcohol and that all three were under the legal age of 21. During a search of the subjects, the officers soon discovered additional unopened cans of beer in their possession. All three were charged with Possession of Alcohol by a Minor / Consumption of Alcohol by a Minor / Evading Arrest or Detention and were transported to Central Booking. Occurred on: 3-06-08, at 2:40 AM. BELLMONT HALL, 2109 San Jacinto Blvd Theft: A gold watch was reported stolen from a 3rd floor office. Loss value: $200.00. Occurred between: 2-22-08 and 2-25-08. FRANK ERWIN CENTER, 1701 Red River Theft: A brown leather Dooney-Bourke purse containing, personal identification, $63.00 in cash, and several credit cards was stolen while the owner was sitting next to it during an event. Loss value: $233.00. Occurred on: 3-08-08, between 5:30 PM and 6:00 PM. FRANK ERWIN CENTER, 1701 Red River Theft: A non-UT subject reported the theft of his letterman jacket after the jacket had been left unattended inside a first floor men's restroom. Loss value: $300.00. Occurred on: 3-07-08, between 11:00 AM and 2:00 PM. GOLDSMITH HALL, #5 West Mall Theft: An Apple laptop computer was reported stolen from an unsecured 4th floor studio. During the investigation, the officer learned that the former owner believed that the other students inside the studio would have watched over his property while he was not there himself. Loss value: $1,000.00. Occurred on: 3-06-08 between 10:00 AM and 8:00 PM. Crime Prevention Tip: Laptop thefts continue to be a problem at most of the colleges and universities. The most common contributing factor in these most of these thefts: Property was left unattended. MIRCO BIOLOGY BUILDING, 2500 Speedway Theft: A black Cannondale F5 mountain bicycle was stolen from the bike racks located on the east side of the building after being secured with a U-shaped lock. Loss value: $600.00. Occurred on: 3-08-08, between 9:30 AM and 3:09 PM. O'HENRY HALL, 601 COLORADO Assist Outside Agency / Possession of Dangerous Drugs: A non-UT subject was observed performing a bodily function in plain view of the public. During the investigation, the officers soon learned that the subject had an outstanding outside agency arrest warrant for a DWI. While the officers were searching the subject, incidental to his arrest, they discovered a small plastic baggie that contained a white powdery substance. The substance tested positive for cocaine. The subject was taken into custody for Assist Outside Agency / Possession of Dangerous Drugs and was transported to Central Booking. Occurred on: 3-11-08, at 2:29 AM. ROBERT L. MOORE HALL, 2515 Speedway Criminal Trespass Warning: A UT staff member discovered a non-UT subject inside a 7th floor computer lab accessing the network while drinking several beers. During the investigation, the officers learned that the subject was not employed or enrolled at the University of Texas. The subject was issued a written Criminal Trespass Warning and was escorted from the building. Occurred on: 3-06-08, at 12:15 AM. Crime Prevention Tip: There have been a number of incidents in this building within the last couple of months. Several of the reported crimes have been crimes of opportunity, property being left unattended or left unsecured. Creating these opportunities are what many of the thieves are looking for. Allowing an unauthorized subject access onto a computer is again creating that opportunity. Ensure you have successfully logged off the university network. If you feel your passwords or logins have been compromised, changes your codes and logins. THOMPSON CONFERENCE CENTER, 2405 Robert Dedman Theft: A Dell laptop computer and LCD projector were stolen from a secured 3rd floor storeroom. During the investigation, the exterior door to the room was discovered unlocked. Loss value: $2,750. Occurred on: 3-06-08, between 3:00 PM and 4:45 PM. UNION BUILDING, #4 West Mall Criminal Trespass Warning: A non-UT subject refused to leave after being told to by his former employer. During the investigation, the subject informed the officer that he was not being treated fairly and was fired for talking on his cellular telephone. The subject was issued a written Criminal Trespass Warning and was escorted from the area. Occurred on: 3-08-08 at 11:15 AM. 100 BLOCK WEST 6th STREET Public Intoxication: A UT student was observed staggering and stumbling in circles, while oblivious to the fact that he was circling a UT police officer. During the investigation, the officer detected a very strong odor of alcohol on the student's breath and noted that his eyes were bloodshot and watery. The student informed the officer that all of his friends were also drunk. The student was taken into custody for Public Intoxication and was transported to Central Booking. Occurred on: 3-09-08, at 1:50 AM. 100 BLOCK WEST 21st STREET Driving While Intoxicated / Possession of Marijuana: A white Jeep Cherokee was observed committing several traffic violations. During the traffic investigation, the officer noted that the driver and three passengers were very nervous and the driver was visible shaking. The officer also noted the driver's eyes were bloodshot and watery. The officer soon discovered why the driver was so nervous as a 6-inch plastic baggie containing a green leafy substance was discovered. The officer then administered the Standardized Field Sobriety tests to the driver. The UT student displayed several clues that indicated that he was intoxicated. The driver was taken into custody for Driving While Intoxicated / Possession of Marijuana and was transported to Central Booking. Occurred on: 3-09-08,at 1:20 AM. 100 BLOCK WEST 22nd STREET Theft: A green GT mountain bicycle was stolen from the bike racks located on the southeast side of Garrison Hall after being secured with a U-shaped lock. Loss value: $270.00. Occurred between: 2-27-08 and 2-29-08. 300 BLOCK WEST 21st STREET Public Intoxication: A non-UT subject was discovered slumped over on the curb and several unidentified subjects were making a gallant attempt to keep him from falling over. During the investigation, the officers detected a very strong odor of alcohol on the subject's breath. The subject was unresponsive to questions. Austin EMS treated the subject at the scene for alcohol poisoning and transported him to a local area hospital for additional treatment. Charges are pending. Occurred on: 3-08-08 at 2:56 AM. 2300 BLOCK SPEEDWAY Theft: A GT mountain bicycle was stolen from the bike racks located along Speedway after being secured with a U-shaped lock. Loss value: $100.00. Occurred between: 2-27-08 and 3-05-08. CAMPUS WIDE: Non-Criminal Calls: In addition to the above criminal cases, The University of Texas Police Department responded to 107 alarm calls, 7 medical emergencies, 3 collision report, 5 suspicious persons reports, 7 suspicious activity reports, and 35 unsecured door reports between 03-03-08 and 03-011-08.
