CAMPUS WATCH: Below is a summary of campus activity reported to or observed by the University Police Department patrol officers between Friday, 03-21-08 and Tuesday, 03-25-08. * * * * * ADMINISTRATIVE MESSAGE * * * * * The University of Texas Police Department is again reminding everyone to secure your property. As you in today's issue of the Campus Watch the thieves are not taking a break. As you read along you will see that most of the property that is being stolen is personal property and not property belonging to the University of Texas. I encourage everyone to mark their personal property with their State issued driver's license number. Again the University of Texas Police Department is asking for your assistance in reporting any and all suspicious activity that you witness. Your telephone call could earn you a pizza of your choice. MCCOMBS SCHOOL OF BUSINESS, 100 East 21st Street Criminal Mischief: A UT staff member discovered a second floor glass door had been shattered after an unknown subject had attempted to kick it in. Loss value: $250.00. Occurred on: 3-24-08, between 7:00 PM and 9:00 PM. NURSING SCHOOL, 1710 Red River Graffiti: A UT police officer discovered illegible words written in white paint on two separate locations located on the west side of the building. Loss value: $75.00. Discovered on: 3-24-08, at 6:45 PM. ROBERT L. MOORE HALL 2515 Speedway Burglary (Criminal Episode): A UT staff member discovered that a portable CD player had been stolen from his secured 7th floor office. During the investigation, the officers soon learned that several additional secured offices had been entered as well and personal items had been removed. As the officers continued, a UT staff member discovered his laptop computer had been removed from his secured office and was discovered outside of the office in the hallway. But other staff members were not as fortunate. The inventory revealed a Toshiba laptop computer, external hard drive, Magnovox CD player, and a Panosonic CD player had been taken from the 7th floor offices. As the investigation continued, the officers soon received complaints from other floors. Additional victims were discovered on the 8th and 10th floors. Officers again compiled an inventory of the property that was reported stolen from several secured offices. The inventory consisted of a set of Sony headphones, Sony digital camera, $100.00 in cash, DPL projector and a box of Austin cookies and crackers. Loss value: $1,125.00. Occurred between: 3-22-08, at 5:00 PM and 3-23-08 at 10:00 AM. TRINITY PARKING GARAGE, 1815 Trinity Theft: A red Klein mountain bicycle was stolen from the bike racks located by the northwest corner of the building after being secured with a U-shaped lock. Loss value: $100.00. Occurred between: 3-03-08 and 3-07-08. UNION BUILDING, #4 West Mall Theft: A Motorola Razor cellular telephone and charger were stolen from an unsecured second floor study area while the former owner was studying in a different room. Loss value: $50.00. Occurred on: 3-03-08, between 1:30 PM and 2:00 PM. UNION BUILDING, #4 West Mall Criminal Trespass Warning: A non-UT subject was observed entering into a reserved section of the building that was closed for a private event. The subject was seen helping himself to several appetizers, then took off running when he was approached by the building manager. Several police officers caught the subject a short distance away from the building. During the investigation, the subject was issued a written Criminal Trespass Warning and was escorted from the campus property. Occurred on: 3-22-08, at 10:52 PM. UNION BUILDING, #4 West Mall Criminal Trespass: A non-UT subject was seen stopping students and asking them for money inside the building. As the officers were approaching the subject, the subject attempted to leave the area, post haste. The subject darted into on coming traffic in a vain attempt to elude the officers. With cat-like reflexes, the officers caught the subject in the middle of the roadway. As the investigation continued, the officers learned that the subject had received a prior written criminal trespass warning. The subject was taken into custody for Criminal Trespass and was transported to Central Booking. Occurred on: 3-22-08, at 5:44 PM. 300 BLOCK EAST 21st STREET Public Intoxication / Consumption of Alcohol by a Minor: A UT police officer observed a non-UT subject ordering two UT students out of his vehicle. During the investigation, the officer watched as one student started to stagger back and forth to realign himself with his navigational chart and was unaware of passing vehicles. As the investigation continued, the officers detected a very strong odor of alcohol on the subject's breath and noted that the student was unaware of where he was at the time. The officers took the subject into custody for Public Intoxication and transported him to Central Booking. The second student was issued a field release citation for Consumption of Alcohol by a Minor after the officers detected a moderate odor of alcohol on the student's breath and learned that he was under the legal age of 21. Occurred on: 3-23-08, at 3:20 AM. 2300 BLOCK SPEEDWAY Criminal Mischief: Two UT students were observed altering several traffic control signs to display sexually explicit messages. During the investigation, the officers removed the offensive messages and referred both students to the Dean of Students' Office. Charges are pending. Occurred on: 3-24-08, at 3:23 AM. 2400 BLOCK SAN JACINTO BLVD Driving While Intoxicated / Possession of Marijuana: A green Ford was observed committing several traffic violations. During the traffic investigation, the officer detected the odor of burning marijuana inside the passenger compartment of the vehicle. The officer observed several indicators that the driver, identified as a UT student, was impaired even though the officer did not detect any odor of alcohol on the driver's breath. The officer administered the Standardized Field Sobriety tests and the driver displayed several more clues that he was intoxicated. The driver was taken into custody for Driving While Intoxicated. During a search of the student's vehicle, the officers discovered a clear plastic baggie that contained a green leafy substance that tested positive for marijuana. The student was transported to Central Booking. Occurred on: 3-23-08, at 12:44 AM. CAMPUS WIDE: Non-Criminal Calls: In addition to the above criminal cases, The University of Texas Police Department responded to 76 alarm calls, 3 medical emergencies, 8 suspicious person reports, 5 suspicious activity reports, and 13 unsecured door reports between 03-21-08 and 03-25-08.
