During the investigation, the officers detected a very strong odor of alcohol on the subject's breath. The student admitted that he had consumed so much vodka that he himself did not think that he could safely walk to his dormitory room. As the investigation continued, the officers located a friend and released the subject to that sober friend. The intoxicated student received a referral to the Dean of Students Office. During the traffic investigation, the officer detected a very strong odor of alcohol on the driver's breath and saw an open can of Dos Equis beer. The driver denied that he been drinking anything that contained alcohol. The officer administered the Standardized Field Sobriety tests to the UT student driver. The driver displayed enough clues that indicated he was intoxicated and was unable to operate a motor vehicle. The student was taken into custody for Driving While Intoxicated and was transported to Central Booking. Since an open container of alcohol was discovered inside the vehicle, the officer filed the enhanced DWI charge. Occurred on: 4-04-08, at 3:40 AM. CRIME PREVENTION TIP OF THE DAY: As you read into day's issue of the Campus Watch, a very serious crime occurred last night at MRH. The student did a great job while being confronted by this subject. The student remained calm and complied with the subject's demands. More importantly the student was not hurt during the encounter. Take a few minutes and ask yourself, "What would I do in a similar situation?" When studying or practicing alone, lock the door and arrange the room so that you can view the door. When being confronted, remain calm and extremely cautious; this will be the hardest part. Do not hesitate in notifying the police. Take your time when relaying details about the incident. Remember, even the smallest detail is very important. CAMPUS WIDE: Non-Criminal Calls: In addition to the above criminal cases, The University of Texas Police Department responded to 11 alarm calls, 2 medical emergencies, 4 suspicious person reports, 3 suspicious activity reports, and 3 unsecured door reports between 04-03-08 and 04-04-08. Contact UT Police at 471-4441 if you have any information regarding any of the above incidents or call 911 regarding suspicious persons, suspicious activities or crime. Your call may help solve or prevent a crime. Campus Watch comments should be directed to Officer Darrell Halstead at 512-232-9634 or Darrell.halstead@austin.utexas.edu .
