Report for 04/07/2008

CAMPUS WATCH: Below is a summary of campus activity reported to or observed by the University Police Department patrol officers between Friday, 04-04-08 and Monday, 04-07-08. JESTER WEST DORMITORY, 201 East 21st Street Assault with Bodily Injury / Public Intoxication: Several UT police officers responded to Jester East dormitory on a reported Assault with injuries. The officers were informed that the suspect had already left the area, and were given a description. As the officers were arriving to the scene, they discovered the suspect holding onto a pole in order to maintain an upright position. The officers noticed that the suspect had a small laceration on his nose and had an over powering odor of alcohol on his breath. Officers had a very difficult time understanding the subject when he attempted to answering the officers' question. Austin EMS was contacted to treat the subject. The subject ended up being transported to a local area hospital for additional treatment. As the investigation continued, the officers located the victim in the assault and learned the suspect had entered into the victim's dormitory room twice and was told to leave both times. Upon entry the second time and being told to leave, the suspect hit the victim. During the altercation, the victim also hit the suspect and knocked him out. The victim and his roommate carried the suspect to the lobby reception area and had the on-call receptionist notify the police. Assault charges are pending. Occurred on: 4-06-08, at 4:37 AM. Crime Prevention Tip: There are several layers of security within the dormitories. The last layer of security is the lock on all of the dormitory room doors. Even though we feel secure inside our homes, apartments, and dormitories there are subjects that seek out unsecured areas. KINISOLVING DORMITORY, 2605 Whitis Ave Suspicious Person: UT police officers responded to Kinsolving Dormitory on a report of loud noise. Upon arrival the officers discovered a UT student wearing only his boxers and a T-shirt banging on the exterior doors. During the investigation, the officers learned that the subject had gotten into an argument with his girlfriend and had left the dormitory. An officer located the subject's girlfriend and retrieved his clothes. Occurred on: 4-06-08, at 3:44 AM. UNIVERSITY TEACHING CENTER, 105 West 21st Street Criminal Trespass Warning: A non-UT subject was discovered establishing a campsite inside the 2nd floor men's restroom. During the investigation, the officers issued the subject a written Criminal Trespass Warning and escorted him out of the building. Occurred on: 4-06-08, at 12:07 AM. WALTER WEBB HALL, 2500 Guadalupe Public Intoxication / Criminal Trespass Warning (4 Counts): UT police officers discovered 4 non-UT subjects attempting to set up a camping area along the east side of the building. During the investigation, the officers noted that one subject was intoxicated to a point that she was a danger to herself; however, the officers were told that she was being taken care of until she sobered up. As the investigation continued, all 4 subjects were issued written Criminal Trespass Warnings and were escorted from the property. Approximately 10 minutes later, the officers discovered that the intoxicated individual had been abandoned by her "friends." The subject was taken into custody for Public Intoxication and was transported to Central Booking. Occurred on: 4-06-08, at 7:15 PM. Crime Prevention Tip: I am asked during many of the UTPD alcohol presentations to describe the Public Intoxication statute of the Texas Penal Code. It is not against the law to get drunk. It is against the law to be intoxicated, in a public place, and become a danger to oneself or to others. Many intoxicated students and non-UT persons are released, by UTPD officers to a sober friend. The friend is taking responsibility until that person sobers up. Word to the wise, choose your friends well. 300 BLOCK EAST 21st STREET Criminal Trespass Warning: A non-UT subject was observed knocking on the exterior door of Moore-Hill dormitory attempting to gain entry. During the investigation, the officers determined that the subject was not a current student or staff member nor had he been invited into the dormitory area. The subject was issued a written Criminal Trespass Warning and was escorted from the area. Occurred on: 4-06-08, at 11:26 PM. 500 BLOCK WEST MARTIN LUTHER KING BLVD Driving While Intoxicated: A black Chrysler sedan was observed traveling west-bound without its headlamps turned on. The UT police officer also observed the vehicle make an unsafe lane change into another occupied traffic lane. During the traffic investigation, the officer noted that the driver's eyes were bloodshot and watery. There was a strong odor of alcohol on the driver's breath. When asked if he had been drinking, the non-UT driver replied, "No." The officer administered the Standardized Field Sobriety tests to the driver. The driver displayed several clues that indicated he was intoxicated. The driver was taken into custody for Driving While Intoxicated and was transported to Central Booking. Occurred on: 4-07-08, at 2:36 AM. 1500 BLOCK RED RIVER Public Intoxication: A non-UT subject was reported to be staggering in the middle of the roadway. During the investigation, the officers located the subject and observed that the subject was maintaining his heading with the aid of the traffic lane divider. As the investigation continued, the officers detected a very strong odor of alcohol on the subject's breath and noted other signs of intoxication. The subject was taken into custody for Public Intoxication and was transported to Central Booking. Occurred on: 4-07-08, at 1:09 AM. 2000 BLOCK UNIVERSITY AVE Driving Under the Influence of Alcohol by a Minor: A Honda Accord was stopped after the UT police officer observed the vehicle traveling without its headlamps turned on. During the traffic investigation, the officers detected a moderate odor of alcohol on the driver's breath. The officer asked the driver if he had been drinking. The driver replied that he had not because he was the designated driver. As the investigation continued, the officers learned that the driver had been drinking at a local area business. The officer soon discovered that the driver was under the legal age of 21. The officer issued the driver a field release citation for Driving Under the Influence of Alcohol by a Minor and confiscated his driver's license. The owner of the vehicle arrived at the scene and the vehicle was released. Occurred on: 4-06-08, at 3:35 AM. Crime Prevention Tip: A Designated Driver program is a great program in helping reduce the number of DWI collisions and ensures all responsible partygoers get home safely. The idea behind the program is that the DD is NOT drinking any alcoholic beverages at all. Drinking even one shot, one beer, or one glass of wine defeats any good intention. CAMPUS WIDE: Non-Criminal Calls: In addition to the above criminal cases, The University of Texas Police Department responded to 21 alarm calls, 2 medical emergencies, 3 suspicious person reports, 6 suspicious activity reports, and 6 unsecured door reports between 04-04-08 and 04-07-08.
