CAMPUS WATCH: Below is a summary of campus activity reported to or observed by the University Police Department patrol officers between Friday, 04-11-08 and Tuesday, 4-15-08. ERNEST COCKRELL HALL, 301 East Dean Keeton Theft: A Samsung cellular telephone was reported stolen from inside an unoccupied 7th floor office after being left on a charger. Loss value: $50.00. Occurred on: 4-14-08, between 10:00 AM and 11:30 AM. ERNEST COCKRELL HALL, 301 East Dean Keeton Theft: A Lennovo laptop computer and a pair of Oakley sunglasses were reported stolen from inside an unsecured 8th floor office. During the investigation, the officer learned that the laptop case had been recovered after being discovered inside another 8th floor room. Loss value: $600.00. Occurred on: 4-14-08, between 10:50 AM and 12:37 PM. ERNEST COCKRELL HALL, 301 East Dean Keeton Theft: A red and blue wallet containing, $15.00 in cash, several credit cards and several forms of identification was stolen from and occupied 8th floor office. During the investigation, the officers learned that another UT student observed an unknown subject enter the office and wander around as if looking for someone. The unknown subject was described as: Black female, 35 years of age, 5'-02", 115 lbs., with short black hair. The subject was last seen wearing hospital style "scrubs." Loss value: $20.00. Occurred on: 4-14-08, between 10:20 AM and 10:25 AM. Crime Prevention Tip: As we can see after reading through this criminal episode we can see how one or two thieves can leave a wide swath of victims in their wake. Very simple measures can prevent this; close and lock office doors. This prevents unauthorized access into a restricted or private office or work space. JESSE H JONES COMMUNICATIONS COMPLEX, 2504-A Whitis Ave Suspicious Person: A UT staff member observed an unknown subject enter into the CMC building. The subject was seen looking into unsecured offices. The staff member confronted the unknown subject and the subject left the area only to be discovered inside CMA. During the investigation, the officers learned that the subject was again confronted and became very nervous when he was told that the police were on their way. The unknown subject left the area in a hurry…wonder why? The unknown subject was only described as a Black male. Occurred on: 4-14-08, at 8:55 AM. JESTER EAST DORMITORY, 203 East 21st Street Theft / Credit Card Abuse: A Texas driver's license, two credit cards, and $10.00 in cash were stolen from inside a wallet that was left inside a secured 10th floor dormitory room. During the investigation, the officers learned that one of the credit cards had already been used to make unauthorized purchases at several businesses. Loss value: Unknown at this time. Occurred between: 4-14-08, at 1:00 PM and 4-15-08, at 12:01 AM. JESTER EAST DORMITORY, 203 East 21st Street Purchase of Alcohol for a Minor / Consumption of Alcohol by a Minor / Criminal Trespass Warning (2 Counts): A UT staff member observed several subjects "slap boxing" and drinking. During the investigation, the officers discovered several 20-oz bottles of coke that contained a very strong odor of alcohol. The officers soon learned that one subject had purchased all of the alcohol and had brought it to the dorm room. Two UT students were issued field release citations for Consumption of Alcohol by a Minor and a non-UT subject was taken into custody for Purchase of Alcohol for a Minor. A second non-UT subject was discovered inside the room and was given a written Criminal Trespass Warning. Occurred on: 4-13-08, at 7:49 PM. PARKING LOT 104, 1900 Block North IH-35 Theft: A grey 2004 Dodge Ram 1500 truck was reported stolen after being parked inside the parking lot. During the investigation, the officer learned that the UT student had a CD case that contained approx. 100 CDs that had been in plain view from outside the vehicle. Loss value: $10,000.00. Occurred on: 4-12-08 and 4-14-08. ROBERT L. MOORE HALL, 2515 Speedway Theft: A Texas driver's license, belonging to a UT staff member, was recovered at a local area business. During the investigation, the officer soon discovered that the driver's license had been stolen from an unsecured 9th floor office along with the wallet it had been in. The wallet was described as green leather tri-fold and contained $50.00 in cash along with various credit cards. The wallet was not recovered. Loss value: $60.00. Theft occurred on: 4-02-08, between 5:00 PM and 6:00 PM. Item recovery: 4-15-08, at 9:30 AM. SAN JACINTO RESIDENCE HALL, 309 East 21st Street Consumption of Alcohol by a Minor / Criminal Trespass: A UT student entered into a 3rd floor dormitory room and argued with the authorized residents that he was in "his room" and that they needed to leave. During the investigation, the officers learned that the subject removed his outer clothes and passed out on top of a bed. As the investigation continued, the officers soon learned that the subject was under the legal age of 21 and had been consuming alcohol. The officers were able to locate the student's roommate and released him into his care. The officers issued the subject a field release citation for Consumption of Alcohol by a Minor as well as a referral to the Dean of Students' Office. Occurred on: 4-13-08, at 6:15 AM. Crime Prevention Tip: Dormitory security has been and always will be an issue as long as students insist on leaving their doors unlocked. Ask yourself this one question, "Would I leave my parent's front door unlocked at night?" If the answer is no, then lock your door as well. TURTLE POND, 200 West Inner Campus Dr. Consumption of Alcohol by a Minor (4 Counts): A UT officer responded to the Turtle Pond on a report of several subjects throwing rocks. During the investigation, the officers learned that one subject had gotten stuck in the middle of the pond and his friends were building a rock bridge so that he could walk out of the pond. As the investigation continued, the officers soon discovered that all four subjects were under the legal age of 21 and had been drinking alcohol because they were bored. All four subjects were issued field release citations for Consumption of Alcohol by a Minor and were also issued referrals to the Dean of Students' Office. Occurred on: 4-13-08, at 12:40 AM. WAGGENER HALL, 2210 Speedway Theft: A UT staff member discovered that a grey and black paper towel dispenser and paper towel roll had been stolen from a 1st floor men's restroom. Loss value: $50.00. Occurred between: 4-11-08 and 4-14-08. 100 BLOCK EAST 21st STREET Criminal Mischief: Three UT students were discovered emulating Van Gogh, Picasso and Andy Warhol on the north side of the PCL. During the investigation, the students were surprised that they needed permission from the university in order to create their works of art. All three students cleaned up their masterpieces and were referred to the Dean of Students. No charges for Criminal Mischief were filed. Occurred on: 4-13-08, at 11:43 PM. 500 BLOCK EAST 23rd STREET Public Intoxication: A non-UT subject was observed having a hard time maintaining his balance as he snaked through his navigational landmarks. The officer observed the subject fall into the path of an oncoming vehicle. The subject was stopped and the subject informed the officer that he was indeed intoxicated, but not "Publicly Intoxicated." The officers detected a very strong odor of alcohol on the subject's breath and noted his eyes were bloodshot and glassy. The subject got very upset when the officers took him into custody for Public Intoxication and transported him to Central Booking. Occurred on: 4-13-08, at 4:20 AM. 2600 BLOCK SAN JACINTO BLVD Driving While Intoxicated: A brown Dodge was observed parked between two parking spaces with its headlamps turned on and the engine running. The officer observed the passenger sitting in a reclined position with his eyes closed. The officer also observed the driver also in a reclined postion. During the investigation, the officer detected a very strong odor of alcohol on the driver's breath and noted that her eyes were bloodshot and watery. The officer administered the Standardized Field Sobriety tests to the non-UT driver. The driver displayed several clues that indicated that she was intoxicated. Due to the fact that the vehicle was still running, the driver was taken into custody for Driving While Intoxicated and was transported to Central Booking. The passenger was released at the scene with his engine still running. Occurred on: 4-11-08, at 2:20 AM. CAMPUS WIDE: Non-Criminal Calls: In addition to the above criminal cases, The University of Texas Police Department responded to 39 alarm calls, 9 suspicious person reports, 6 suspicious activity reports, and 20 unsecured door reports between 04-11-08 and 04-15-08.
