Report for 05/13/2008

CAMPUS WATCH: Below is a summary of campus activity reported to or observed by the University Police Department patrol officers between Monday, 05-12-08 and Tuesday, 05-13-08. DKR TEXAS MEMORIAL STADIUM, 405 East 23rd Street Graffiti: Symbols and emblems from a rival Texas University were discovered painted in white and maroon paint on the 11th level. Est. Loss: $50.00. Discovered on: 5-13-08, at 4:18 AM. JESTER WEST DORMITORY, 201 East 21st Street Criminal Trespass Warning: A UT student was approached by three non-UT subjects and was offered an opportunity to buy a used MP3 player. The student became very suspicious and notified the police. During the investigation, the non-UT subjects told the officers that they were helping a friend move out of the dormitory, but could not provide a name or location. The subjects were all issued written Criminal Trespass Warnings and were escorted from the area. Prior to being released, the officers attempted to see if the MP3 player had been reported stolen, no report listing an MP3 player was discovered. Occurred on: 5-12-08, at 6:15 PM. Crime Prevention Tip: Throughout the past school year we have talked about the importance of engraving your property with your State issued driver's license number. If this MP3 player was in fact stolen, the officers could have determined that on the spot by contacting the owner through that DL number. Many victims do not realize their property is stolen for a while. Then they blow it off, thinking the police will never find their property. JESTER WEST DORMITORY, 201 East 21st Street Theft: A Mobile Edge backpack containing a Dell laptop computer, Apple iPod MP3 player, Motorola cellular telephone, and an iPod charger were stolen after being left unattended inside a first floor classroom. Loss value: $1,165.00. Occurred on: 5-12-08, between 2:00 PM and 3:30 PM. 200 BLOCK WEST 22nd STREET Driving While Intoxicated: A red Dodge Intrepid was seen traveling the wrong way on a posted one-way street. During the traffic investigation the officer detected a very strong odor of alcohol and mustard on the driver's breath. The driver denied the alcohol libations, but admitted to eating a mustard laden hotdog. The officer noted that the non-UT driver's eyes were bloodshot and watery. The officer noted that the driver could not comprehend simple questions and his reactions to the simple questions were even slower. The officer administered the Standardized Field Sobriety tests to the driver. During the tests, the driver displayed several clues that indicated he was intoxicated. The driver seemed to realize he was not doing well and stopped, shrugged his shoulders, hung his head and placed his hands behind his back to allow the officer to handcuff him. The driver was taken into custody for Driving While Intoxicated and was transported to Central Booking. Occurred on: 5-13-08, at 3:45 AM. CAMPUS WIDE: Non-Criminal Calls: In addition to the above criminal cases, The University of Texas Police Department responded to 13 alarm calls, 2 suspicious person reports, 3 suspicious activity reports, and 8 unsecured door reports between 05-12-08 and 05-13-08.
