Report for 05/16/2008

CAMPUS WATCH: Below is a summary of campus activity reported to or observed by the University Police Department patrol officers between Thursday, 05-15-08 and Friday, 05-16-08. Commencement is a term used to signify a new beginning. As we send our graduates out into the world to start their new journeys let us, the dedicated faculty and staff members of the 40 Acres, commence on a new mind set to do our part to be crime free. As our campus is inundated with the friends and the family members of our latest graduates, keep in mind there may also be thieves who come to campus with intentions of committing thefts during commencement. As you prepare to leave campus for the weekend, keep in mind that so many buildings will be open for the various commencement ceremonies. Make sure you lock your office door and windows. For added security, place your valuables in a locked desk drawer before you leave. If you will be on campus for the festivities, make sure you take the time to lock your office door before you head out to the Main Building. As always, please report suspicious activity to the police department at 512-471-4441. Let us send our graduates out, knowing that we have done all we can to protect the campus for tomorrow's students. Congratulations Class of 2008! The driver was taken into custody for Driving While Intoxicated. Crime Prevention Tip of the Day: After tomorrow and this weekend's festivities, life at UT might slow down for some of us next week. Because of the serious nature of several crimes last month, The University of Texas Police Department would like to take this moment to announce a new safety program that is currently available to all faculty, staff, students, and incoming freshman. The program is called Shots Fired When Lighting Strikes. The program addresses an "Active Shooter" incident and provides some very good recommendations. To view the video presentation, please go to the following web site: https://www.utexas.edu/police/shotsfired/ You will be required to enter your UT ID number and password to gain access. Parents, I know that you are also interested in seeing this video. You do have options, depends in the number children that you currently have enrolled at UT. CAMPUS WIDE: Non-Criminal Calls: In addition to the above criminal cases, The University of Texas Police Department responded to 17 alarm calls, 2 suspicious activity reports, and 5 unsecured door reports between 05-15-08 and 05-16-08. Contact UT Police at 471-4441 if you have any information regarding any of the above incidents or call 911 regarding suspicious persons, suspicious activities or crime.
