The subject was found to be under the influence of an alcoholic beverage to the point the was a danger to himself. Occurred on 06/05/08 at 2:59 a.m. Crime Prevention Tip: In case the description from the Sanchez Building case does not sound familiar, we had reports of office thefts earlier this week that matched the description given in this case. In all of the office theft cases, the method of theft was the same: a subject entered an unsecured office, opened desk drawers and / cabinets, stole a wallet or purse, sat in a men's restroom and removed cash from the wallet or purse. The thefts have happened all around campus. There very well could be one person responsible for most of these thefts. Let us, as a community, do what we can to prevent these thefts and apprehend the person responsible. Make sure you keep the door to your office closed and locked when you are not inside the office. Keep your valuables with you or locked up. Report any suspicious people to the police department when you first see them. If you see someone that makes you ask yourself, “Should I be calling the police?” then yes, you should be calling the police. We can be reached at 512-471-4441. On a side note regarding the thefts of wallets and purses, the value of such items listed in the Campus Watch is for the actual value of the property, it does not include the time, cost and unpleasantness of clearing your good name and credit from a case of identity theft. Protect yourself. Survey your wallet or purse. Remove any items that you do not need. Limit the amount of credit cards / debit cards you keep. Never leave your social security card in your purse or wallet. Put a “freeze” on your credit information. For more information on freezing your credit, conduct an internet search for Texas Security Freeze law. Do not keep your driver's license number on your checks. Write “See ID” in the signature block on the back of your credit and debit cards. With identity theft, an ounce of prevention truly is worth a pound of cure.
