Report for 06/19/2008

CAMPUS WATCH: Below is a summary of campus activity reported to or observed by the University Police Department patrol officers between Wednesday, 06-18-08 and Thursday, 06-19-08. ALMETRIS DUREN RESIDENCE HALL, 2624 Whitis Criminal Trespass Warning: A non-UT subject was reported as loitering around the bicycle racks located on the east side of the building. When officers stopped the subject, he was found in possession of several tools and two bicycle lights. Ownership of the bicycle lights could not be established. The subject was issued a written criminal trespass warning. Occurred on 06/18/08 at 3:05 p.m. Crime Prevention Tip: In this case, the reporting person did just what we expect from our Longhorn community. The reporting person knew there had been recent thefts from the same bicycle racks. The same reporting person recognized a person loitering in the bicycle racks was suspicious and called the police department. Sadly, in this case, the officers could not prove the bicycle lights were not the property of the suspicious person as there was no owner applied identifying numbers on the lights. To help police officers verify ownership of property and to locate the owner of stolen property, mark your property with your state issued driver's license or identification card number. ENGINEERING TEACHING CENTER, 204 East Dean Keeton Theft: A black and grey Trek 6700 bicycle was stolen while it was secured with a u-lock with an attached chain to a bicycle rack located on the south side of the building. Loss value: $750.00. Occurred on 06/18/08 between 8:00 a.m. and 5:00 p.m. Crime Prevention Tip: It is a rare occasion when a u-lock is defeated. For that reason, it is our minimum recommendation for securing your bicycle. Many of you already know that we recommend the use of both a u-lock and a self locking chain or cable lock. It is important to realize what a self locking cable or chain is. In this case, the chain was affixed to the u-lock. Once the thief defeated the u-lock, the chain slid off of the broken u-lock. To maximize your bicycle security, use a u-lock and a cable /chain lock that has its own locking mechanism. HARRY RANSOM CENTER, 300 West 21st Street Criminal Mischief: Several different colors of chalk were used to draw symbols on the sidewalk located on the east side of the building. Removal cost: $20.00. Discovered on 06/18/08 at 3:20 a.m. 27TH STREET GARAGE, 109 West 27th Street Possession of Marijuana / Possession of Drug Paraphernalia: While responding to a panic alarm, UT police officers found a UT student sitting in a black 2006 Cadillac 4-door that was parked on the 2nd level of the garage. The student advised he was in his car because he was not allowed to smoke in or around his dormitory. The student quickly realized he was not allowed to smoke what he was smoking anywhere in Texas as he was found to be in possession of .125 ounces of marijuana and a multi-colored glass pipe containing burned marijuana residue. Occurred on 06/19/08 at 2:04 a.m. 2300 Guadalupe Driving While Intoxicated: A non-UT subject was stopped for disregarding a standing red light while driving a 2000 Toyota 4-door. The subject was found to be under the influence of an alcoholic beverage to the point he was driving while intoxicated. Occurred on 06/18/08 at 2:15 a.m. 2600 Guadalupe Possession of Drug Paraphernalia / Open Container in a Motor Vehicle: A non-UT subject was stopped after disregarding a standing red light while driving a 1996 Dodge Ram pick-up truck. An open can of beer and a small metal pipe containing steel wire batting in one end was found inside the pick-up truck. Occurred on 06/19/08 at 12:01 a.m. 2000 San Jacinto Theft: A vehicle wheel immobilizer (wheel boot) was stolen when it was secured to a tire of parked 1995 Ford sport utility vehicle.
