Report for 06/27/2008

CAMPUS WATCH: Below is a summary of campus activity reported to or observed by the University Police Department patrol officers between Thursday, 06-26-08 and Friday, 06-27-08. If you have any information pertaining to these incidents or any other criminal / suspicious activity, contact the UT Police Department at 512-471-4441. ANIMAL RESOURCES CENTER, 2710 Speedway Criminal Trespass Warning (2 counts) / Assist Outside Agency: Two non-UT subjects were found camping under the exterior stairwell located on the west side of the building. One of the two subjects was found to have an outstanding outside agency arrest warrant. Both subjects were issued written criminal trespass warnings. The subject who did not have an arrest warrant was then released at the scene. Occurred on 06/26/08 at 11:19 p.m. ANNA HISS GYMNASIUM, 2501 Wichita Theft: A Sony PlayStation 2 game console was stolen from a 1st floor teacher resource room. Loss value: $250.00. Occurred between 06/18/08 and 06/25/08. SAN ANTONIO GARAGE, 2420 San Antonio Public Intoxication: A non-UT subject was found “unconscious” on the ground just north of the parking garage. The subject was found to be under the influence of an alcoholic beverage to the point Austin-Travis County Emergency Medical Services had to transport the subject to a local hospital for the treatment of alcohol poisoning. Occurred on 06/26/08 at 5:43 p.m. Crime Prevention Tip: Sadly, alcohol poisoning all too often goes undetected and untreated. The dangers of alcohol poisoning include, mental confusion, coma, or the victim cannot be roused. The victims of alcohol poisoning also experience vomiting, seizures, slowed or irregular breathing (fewer than eight breaths per minute or 10 seconds or more between breaths) and / or hypothermia (low body temperature). Alcohol is a depressant that can reduce your body's functioning like gag reflex ability and breathing. Because alcohol is an irritant, especially in high concentrations, your stomach will frequently try to expel the alcohol from your system (we have all seen this in our friends – or at least have read about it in the Campus Watch). The reduced gag reflex ability puts one at an increased risk of asphyxiation when the stomach does expel the alcohol from the stomach. Know the dangers and look for such dangers in yourself and in your friends. If your friend has passed out due to binge drinking, or if your friend is experiencing any of the above mentioned conditions due to alcohol consumption, then seek medical attention for your friend as soon as possible. As always, I strongly encourage everyone to learn your limit and stay within that limit. If you find your limit increases with each drink, then seek help. WILL C. HOGG, #2 East Mall Attempted Theft: An unidentified person reported seeing a bicycle unsecured on a bicycle rack located on the east side of the building. The reporting person stated he had previously seen the bicycle secured to the bicycle rack with a cable lock. The responding officer found the unsecured bicycle. A cut cable lock was found lying on the ground next to the bicycle. Loss value: $30.00. Reported on 06/26/08 at 9:10 p.m. Crime Prevention Tip: It would not surprise me to find out the thief in this case was scared away by someone passing by. Students do not rely on a passerby to keep your bicycle secured. The best defense is a u-shaped lock (that uses a flat key) and a cable lock. 300 East 23rd Street Criminal Trespass Warning / Assist Outside Agency: A non-UT subject was found sleeping on the East Mall. The subject was found to have an outstanding outside agency arrest warrant. In addition to other law enforcement action taken, the subject was issued a written criminal trespass warning. Occurred on 06/26/08 at 5:19 p.m. 300 West 24th Street Consumption of Alcohol by a Minor: Two UT students, who were both under the age of 21, were observed attempting to walk along the sidewalk. One of the two students was more successful maintaining a straight line while walking than the other. Both students were found to have consumed alcoholic beverages, but not to the point they were a danger to themselves or others. Occurred on 06/27/08 at 3:33 a.m. CAMPUS WIDE: Non-Criminal Calls: In addition to the above criminal cases, The University of Texas Police Department responded to 9 alarm calls, 1 unsecured door report, 1 suspicious person report, 1 welfare concern, 1 medical emergency, 1 suspicious odor report, 1 suspicious activity report and 2 key assist requests between 06-26-08 and 06-27-08.
