Report for 07/03/2008

CAMPUS WATCH: Below is a summary of campus activity reported to or observed by the University Police Department patrol officers between Wednesday, 07-02-08 and Thursday, 07-03-08. If you have any information pertaining to these incidents or any other criminal / suspicious activity, contact the UT Police Department at 512-471-4441. PHARMACY BUILDING, 2409 University Theft: A white Apple Macbook laptop computer was stolen while it was secured with a laptop cable lock to a podium located inside a 2nd floor classroom. Loss value: $1,250.00. Occurred between 7/2/08 at 10:30pm and 7/2/08 at 4:30am. SAN ANTONIO GARAGE, 2420 San Antonio Criminal Trespass (2 counts): Two non-UT subjects were observed sitting on the steps located inside the southwest stairwell of the parking garage. The two subjects were drinking an alcoholic beverage. Both subjects were found to have previously been issued written criminal trespass warnings. Occurred on 07/02/08 at 4:50 p.m. 2300 Guadalupe Attempted Strong Armed Robbery (Austin Police Case): A UT police officer was flagged down by three UT students in the 100 block of West 21st Street. One of the students wanted to report an unidentified subject had just attempted to steal her bracelet. The student stated a male subject approached them in the 2300 block of Guadalupe and asked how they were doing. The subject then grabbed at the student's wrist in what appeared to be an attempt to steal her bracelet. The subject ran northbound as the students began to run southbound. The subject was described as a Hispanic male in his 20's, wearing an orange baseball hat (backwards), and orange t-shirt and shorts. The subject was also described as having a small amount of facial hair on his chin. The student was not injured in the incident. The Austin Police Department and The University of Texas at Austin Police Department conducted an extensive search of the area. Occurred on 07/03/08 at 3:01 a.m. Crime Prevention Tip: In this case, the victim did many things well. She was out with friends – there is safety in numbers. Instead of an attempted strong armed robbery, the subject may have tried something worse if the victim were by herself. All three students fled the scene as soon as they realized something was wrong. The best was to stop an attack is to break free and run away. One thing I would like to recommend is to keep your cell phone with you at all times. If you are need of police assistance, dial 9-1-1 as soon as it is safe for you to do so. Dean Keeton Street and Red River Street Driving While Intoxicated / Possession of Marijuana / Possession of a Prescription Medication without a Prescription / Public Intoxication: A UT student was observed sitting in his Nissan passenger car at a standing red light. The student did not have the headlamps to his vehicle turned on. As the Nissan pulled through the intersection, the officer noticed the Nissan had two flat tires, front end body damage and had smoke coming from some portion of the front end. As the student pulled his vehicle over, one of the flat tires flew from its rim. The student was found to be under the influence of an alcoholic beverage to the point he was driving while intoxicated. The student was also found to be in possession of a small amount of marijuana and a prescription pill without a prescription. A second UT student was a passenger inside the vehicle and was found to be under the influence of an alcoholic beverage to the point she was a physical danger to herself. Occurred on 07-03-08 at 2:50 a.m. Crime Prevention Tip: It would be easy to say don't drink and drive – we've all heard that before. In this case it was clear that the vehicle had been in a collision prior to being stopped. The driver and the passenger were not aware of being in a collision. This is very tragic – especially when you realize a drunk driver ran through a construction barricade in Houston, Texas earlier this week. Before stopping, that driver ran over two Houston Police Officers; killing one and leaving the other in critical condition – Please do not drink and drive. 200 East 21st Street Criminal Trespass / Assist Outside Agency: A non-UT subject was observed riding a bicycle up to the driver's side window of an occupied vehicle. The subject was believed to be soliciting money from the driver of the vehicle. The subject had previously been issued a written criminal trespass warning. The subject was also found to have two outstanding outside agency arrest warrants for aggressive solicitation and for riding a bicycle at night without a light. The subject stated the bicycle he was riding belonged to a friend. The friend was obviously not a close friend, as the subject could not remember his friend's name. Occurred on 07/02/08 at 8:15 p.m. CAMPUS WIDE: Non-Criminal Calls: In addition to the above criminal cases, The University of Texas Police Department responded to 18 alarm calls, a suspicious person call and 3 unsecured door reports between 07-02-08 and 07-03-08.
