CAMPUS WATCH: Below is a summary of campus activity reported to or observed by the University Police Department patrol officers between Friday, 08-22-08 and Monday, 08-25-08. We would also like to encourage everyone to take a moment to learn more about various laws, rules and sanctions on campus. For instance, many people do not consider if there are sanctions involving skateboarding or roller skating on campus. Sanctions involving skating and skateboarding on campus are readily available on the Parking and Transportation Services web-page at http://www.utexas.edu/parking/rules/index.html So do yourself a favor and study a little about campus standards and rules before school starts back up. CENTENNIAL PARK, 1600 Red River Criminal Trespass Warning: A UT police officer discovered two non-UT subjects in a restricted secluded area. During the investigation, the officer issued both subjects a written Criminal Trespass Warning and escorted them from the area. Occurred on: 8-23-08, at 12:01 PM. COLORADO APARTMENTS, 2501 Lake Austin Blvd Public Intoxication: Several UT police officers responded to the Colorado Apartments on a report of a highly intoxicated subject banging on an apartment door. Upon the arrival of the officers, the officers observed a UT student staggering as he was being supported by another UT student. The officers detected a very strong odor of alcohol on the intoxicated student's breath. During the investigation, the intoxicated student was combative towards the officers as well as argumentative. The officers learned that the subject had been dropped off at his girlfriend's apartment. The officers also learned that the subject had become upset when his girlfriend took his car keys at the party. Due to the subject's intoxication and the refusal of the girlfriend to take care custody and control of the subject, the student was taken into custody for Public Intoxication and was transported to Central Booking. Occurred on: 8-24-08, at 4:55 AM. FRANK ERWIN CENTER, 1701 Red River Theft: A non-UT subject reported the theft of three extra large towels and a bottle of massage oil. Loss value: $150.00. Occurred between 8-23-08, at 10:30 PM and 8-24-08, at 12:01 PM. GREGORY GYM, 2101 Speedway Theft: A blue and white Kona mountain bicycle was reported stolen from the bike racks located on the west side of the building after being secured with a U-shaped lock. Loss value: $500.00. Occurred between 8-06-08 and 8-22-08. JESTER EAST DORMITORY, 203 East 21st Street Theft: A red and silver bicycle was reported stolen from the bike racks located on the west side of the building after being secured with a self-locking cable lock. Loss value: $50.00. Occurred on: 8-22-08, between 8:00 PM and 11:30 PM. JESTER EAST DORMITORY, 203 East 21st Street Theft: A Philips speaker system was reported stolen after being left inside an unsecured second floor dormitory room. Loss value: $50.00. Occurred on: 8-23-08, between 7:05 PM and 7:20 PM. Crime Prevention Tip: Dormitories have become a popular place these days, maybe due to the fact that the new semester starts in just two days. The thefts that occur in these areas are so easy to prevent…simply lock your dormitory door when you walk out. Even for just a few minutes. JESTER WEST DORMITORY, 201 East 21st Street Possession of Marijuana / Possession of Drug Paraphernalia: A UT staff member detected the odor of burning marijuana coming from inside a first floor dormitory room and reported it to the police. Upon the arrival of the officers, the officers detected a moderate odor of burning marijuana coming from the room. During the investigation, the officers discovered two UT students and a guest inside the room. The officers also saw, in plain view, a brass screen sitting on top of a desk. As the investigation, the officers soon discovered a small glass pipe that contained burned marijuana residue inside the bowl. Next to the pipe was a small quantity of marijuana. The officers were able to determine who the owner of the marijuana and pipe was and issued that subject a field release citation for Possession of Drug Paraphernalia. Occurred on:8-24-08, at 10:18 PM. JESTER WEST DORMITORY, 201 East 21st Street Consumption of Alcohol by a Minor (3 Counts) / Theft: Three UT students were seen swaying back and forth while carrying several orange colored traffic control cones that were marked UTPTS. One subject dropped the traffic cones he was absconding with when he saw the police officer. All three subjects were stopped and the officer detected a very strong odor of alcohol on their breaths. All three subjects admitted that they had been to a fraternity house near 25th Street and Nueces and had been consuming alcoholic beverages. All three subjects were issued field release citations for Consumption of Alcohol by a Minor and released at the scene. All three subjects were told to return the traffic cones to location that they had taken them from. All three complied. Occurred on: 8-24-08, at 1:55 AM. JESTER WEST DORMITORY, 201 East 21st Street Public intoxication: A UT student was discovered passed out on the steps leading into the dormitory. The subject was still clutching his wallet. During the investigation, the officer was able to wake the student, and the student began having an involuntary physical reaction to the overconsumption of alcohol to a point where Austin EMS was notified. The subject was treated at the scene for alcohol poisoning and was then transported to a local area hospital. Charges are pending. Occurred on: 8-23-08, at 2:32 AM. LIVING LEARNING CENTER, 2610 Whitis Ave: Possession of Marijuana: A UT staff member detected a very strong odor of marijuana coming from a 2nd floor dormitory room and notified the police. During the investigation, the officers confirmed a very strong odor of burning marijuana and were able to identify the residents inside the room. As the investigation continued, the residents informed the officers that they had been with several friends and that the odor was coming from the clothes they were wearing, the resident then offered to spray the room with air freshener to mask the smell. The officers did note that the eyes of both students were bloodshot and the room had a very strong odor of burned marijuana. Both students received a referral to the Dean of Students' Office. Occurred on: 8-23-08, at 8:37 PM. 200 BLOCK WEST 6th STREET Public Intoxication: A non-UT subject was observed chasing a UT student as well as another non-UT subject. The officer heard the UT student telling the pursuer to stop. The pursuer chased both subjects into an active lane of traffic. All three subjects were stopped. The officer noted that the non-UT subject's face was flushed and that there was a very strong odor of alcohol on the subject's breath. The officer took the non-UT subject into custody for Public Intoxication and transported him to Central Booking. Occurred on: 8-23-08, at 2:41 AM. 300 BLOCK EAST 21st STREET Possession of Alcohol inside a Motor Vehicle: A Toyota truck was blocking the roadway, as the occupants were unloading the vehicle. During the interview, the officer observed in plain view an open 12-oz bottle of beer. The non-UT driver was issued a field release citation for Possession of Alcohol inside a Motor Vehicle. Occurred on: 89-24-08, at 2:17 PM. 1900 BLOCK SAN JACINTO BLVD Driving While Intoxicated / Consumption of Alcohol by a Minor: A black Ford Mustang was observed traveling at a high rate of speed while spinning its tires. During the traffic investigation, the officer noted that the driver's eyes were bloodshot and glassy. The driver had slow lethargic reactions to questions and commands. The subject was taken into custody for Driving While Intoxicated and was transported to Central Booking. During the investigation, the officers learned that the two passengers were under the legal age of 21 and had been drinking alcoholic beverages. Both subjects were issued field release citations for Consumption of Alcohol by a Minor and were released at the scene. Occurred on: 8-23-08, at 3:26 AM. 2100 BLOCK ROBERT DEDMAN Public intoxication: A non-UT subject was seen stumbling and staggering as he attempted to yell and scream out profanities. During the investigation, the officers detected a very strong odor of alcohol on the subject's breath and noted that his eyes were glassy and bloodshot. The subject became combative towards the officers. The subject was taken into custody for Public intoxication and was transported to Central Booking. Occurred on: 8-24-08, at 12:01 AM. 2300 BLOCK SAN JACINTO BLVD Driving Under the Influence of Alcohol by a Minor / Consumption of Alcohol by a Minor (3 Counts): A blue Jeep was observed traveling at a high rate of speed and committing several additional traffic violations. During the traffic investigation, the officer detected a moderate odor of alcohol on the driver's breath and learned that the driver was under the legal age of 21. The officer issued the subject a field release citation for Driving Under the Influence of Alcohol by a Minor. During the investigation, the officer learned that all the passengers were also under the legal age of 21 and had also been consuming adult beverages. All of the passengers were issued field release citations for Consumption of Alcohol by a Minor. Occurred on: 8-24-08, at 12:58 AM. Crime Prevention Tip of the Day: As you have read the thieves know that the students are back on campus. The thieves are now out in full force. Take a minute and double check that your dormitory room or apartment is secured before you leave. CAMPUS WIDE: Non-Criminal Calls: In addition to the above criminal cases, The University of Texas Police Department responded to 69 alarm calls, 5 unsecured door reports, 1 suspicious person reports, 3 suspicious activity reports, 3 collision reports and 5 public assists between 08-22-08 and 08-25-08.
