Report for 08/27/2008

CAMPUS WATCH: Below is a summary of campus activity reported to or observed by the University Police Department patrol officers between Tuesday, 08-26-08 and Wednesday, 08-27-08. If you have any information pertaining to these incidents or any other criminal / suspicious activity, contact the UT Police Department at 512-471-4441. JESTER WEST DORMITORY, 201 East 21st Street Graffiti: A UT police officer discovered words and symbols written in red magic marked inside a first floor men's restroom. Loss value: $50.00. Discovered on: 8-27-08, at 4:15 AM. MAIN BUILDING, #1 South Mall Theft: An orange colored Mongoose mountain bicycle was stolen from the bike racks located on the west side of the building after being secured with a self-locking cable lock. Loss value: $200.00. Occurred on: 8-26-08, between 3:45 PM and 6:20 PM. Crime Prevention Tip: If you are keeping track, this is the 3rd reported stolen bicycle this week. A Campus Watch subscriber wrote, she was shocked at the number of bicycles stolen at UT and wanted to make sure she was doing everything possible to prevent her bike from becoming another statistic. The current recommendations at UT are: Incorporate a two lock locking system. Your primary lock is a U-shaped lock that requires a flat key. The secondary lock is a self-locking cable lock. Do not stop there. Take a minute and register your bicycle with UT Parking and Transportation. This is a simple and painless process to aid the police in the recovery of your property in case the bike is stolen. WEST MALL BUILDING, #3 West Mall Criminal Trespass Warning: A UT staff member observed a non-UT subject going into a restricted area on several occasions, using a key. During the investigation, the officers learned that the non-UT subject was a former UT student who had not relinquished her control of several keys. The keys were confiscated and the subject was issued a Criminal Trespass Warning. Occurred on: 8-26-08, at 7:10 PM. Crime Prevention Tip: Everyone likes to come back to UT to visit and re-live the excitement. There are those who like to come back for other reasons. Key control has been and still remains a concern. Each department needs to develop and put in place a policy that requires students, staff and faculty to surrender all UT property to a departmental representative upon graduation or terminating employment. It is then the department's responsibility to return keys to the appropriate UT authority. Crime Prevention Tip of the Day: As you have seen this week, thefts are picking up. There are three things that a thief need in order to apply their trade, desire, ability, and the opportunity. By working together we can reduce opportunities at UT. Lock doors, mark personal and departmental property. Report all suspicious activity or suspicious people. CAMPUS WIDE: Non-Criminal Calls: In addition to the above criminal cases, The University of Texas Police Department responded to 18 alarm calls, 12 unsecured door reports, 2 suspicious person reports, 2 suspicious activity reports, and 3 public assists between 08-26-08 and 08-27-08.
