Report for 09/02/2008

CAMPUS WATCH: Below is a summary of campus activity reported to or observed by the University Police Department patrol officers between Friday, 08-29-08 and Tuesday, 09-02-08. If you have any information pertaining to these incidents or any other criminal / suspicious activity, contact the UT Police Department at 512-471-4441. ASHBEL SMITH HALL, 201 West 7th Street Public Intoxication: A non-UT subject was observed hitting a parked car with a traffic cone. The subject was found to be under the influence of an alcoholic beverage to the point he was a danger to himself, others and obviously parked cars. Occurred on 08/31/08 at 1:24 a.m. AT&T EXECUTIVE EDUCATION & CONFERENCE CENTER, 1900 University Assault by Contact / Criminal Trespass Warning: A non-UT subject was found wandering through the conference center. When a conference center staff member asked the subject to leave, the subject yelled words best not repeated and grabbed the staff member by the necktie. The staff member quickly escorted the subject from the building. To top the subject's day off, he was also issued a written criminal trespass warning. Occurred on 08/29/08 at 10:03 a.m. BRAZOS PARKING GARAGE, 200 East Martin Luther King Theft: A dark red Trek Pilot bicycle with attached handlebar headlamp and rear wheel backpack rack was stolen while it was secured with a cable lock to a bicycle rack located on the northeast side of the garage. Loss value: $375.00. Occurred between 08/28/08 at 3:00 p.m. and 08/29/08 at 8:55 a.m. Crime Prevention Tip: As you will read in today's edition, there were several bicycle thefts that were reported to UTPD since Friday morning. One common thread in each case is that the owners of the bicycle used a cable lock to secure their bicycle. To protect your bicycle, use a quality u-lock. If you truly want to make sure your bicycle is kept where you secured it – use a U-lock and a cable lock at the same time. DARRELL K ROYAL TEXAS MEMORIAL STADIUM, 2109 San Jacinto Theft: A non-UT subject reported his wallet containing his game entry ticket, four credit cards and approximately $60.00 in cash was stolen from his left rear pocket while he was waiting in line to make entry into the stadium for what turned out to be the UT victory over Florida Atlantic. The subject reported seeing a suspicious subject walking through the entry lines – not toward the entry gate. That subject was described as a black male approximately 5'7” tall and wearing all dark clothing. The victim did not feel anyone stealing his wallet from his back pocket. Occurred on 08/30/08 at 6:10 p.m. Crime Prevention Tip: Large crowds waiting to enter through comparatively narrow gates like those found at athletic venues draw pick-pockets like moths to a flame. Keep this in mind any time you start out for any adventure that may put you in this situation. Rule number one is to only carry that which you know you will need. Limit the amount of credit cards, identification cards and cash that you carry with you. Also, if your pant pockets have button closures use them. You may also want to consider carrying your wallet in a pocket that is not the norm – say a front pocket. Of course there is also the old trick of wrapping a rubber band around your wallet. The rubber band creates friction that will help keep your wallet in place. DARRELL K ROYAL TEXAS MEMORIAL STADIUM, 2109 San Jacinto Public Intoxication / Assault by Contact: UT Police Officers observed a crying female student being followed out of section 5 of the stadium by an obviously intoxicated male student. The two students sat on a set of stairs located under section 5. While seated, the male subject lost his balance and fell over. Upon approach of the officers, the two subjects stood up and began to walk away. The male student then pushed the female student two times. The male student was found to be intoxicated to the point he was a danger to himself and others. Occurred on 08/30/08 at 8:50 p.m. DARRELL K ROYAL TEXAS MEMORIAL STADIUM, 2200 Robert Dedman Assist Outside Agency: A non-UT subject was stopped after causing a disturbance with a UT staff member as the staff member could not locate the subject's wife who was working at the football stadium. The subject was found to have multiple outside agency arrest warrants. Occurred on 08/30/08 11:30 p.m. DARRELL K ROYAL TEXAS MEMORIAL STADIUM, 2200 Robert Dedman Possession of Alcohol by a Minor (2 counts): Yours truly has the distinguished privilege of maintaining a constant vigilance over the stadium during home football games. Me and my, not so little binoculars, barely blink between the kick-off and the final signing of The Eyes of Texas. During this weekend's game, I happened to spy with my little eye two occasions in which UT students, who were under the age of 21, were concealing alcoholic beverage containers about their persons. A quick call to one of UT Finest working that section, resulted in both students being found with just such containers. Occurred on 08/30/08 at 6:20 p.m. and at 6:45 p.m. DARRELL K ROYAL TEXAS MEMORIAL STADIUM, 2200 Robert Dedman Consumption of Alcohol by a Minor: A 19 year old UT student was observed demonstrating the balance impairments provided by alcohol consumption. That student stated she was 31 years old and later stated her year of birth was 1931. The student's further comments indicated she had a desire to relieve her bladder on the officer. The student provided several false names and dates of birth. The student was obviously under the influence of an alcoholic beverage to the point she was a danger to herself and the officer's pants leg. A sober, responsible friend agreed to take care, custody and control of the aging student. Occurred on 08/30/08 at 7:39 p.m. FRANK C ERWIN SPECIAL EVENTS CENTER, 1701 Red River Theft / Criminal Trespass Warning: A UT staff member stopped a contracted staff member who was carrying a box containing 20 hamburger patties, 2 bags of buffalo wings and a 20-ounce bottle of Sprite to his car. The cut cable lock was found next to the bicycle racks. Loss value: $200.00. Occurred between 08/29/08 at 2:00 p.m. and 08/31/08 at 3:18 p.m. JESTER CENTER EAST, 203 East 21st Street Criminal Trespass Warning (4 counts): While investigating a report of the smell of burning marijuana, UT police officers located four non-UT subjects inside a 2nd floor room. At that time, the subjects were guests of one of the occupants of that room. The four subjects were found to have violated several Housing and Food and UT regulations; including the removal of a smoke detector, brining a non-service animal (dog) into the room and smoking cigarettes in the room's closet. At the direction of Housing and Food Staff, the four subjects were issued written criminal trespass warnings. Occurred on 09/01/08 at 8:47 p.m. JESTER CENTER WEST, 201 East 21st Street Criminal Trespass Warning: A non-UT subject was reported as loitering in the area after he was asked to leave by Housing and Food staff members. The subject stated he was there to assist his girlfriend with moving into the dormitory. The subject was issued a written criminal trespass warning as he apparently did not know Moove-in ended a week ago. Occurred on 08/31/08 at 3:40 a.m. JOHN W. HARGIS HALL, 1811 Red River Public Intoxication: A non-UT subject was found lying on the sidewalk on the west side of the building. The subject had a very difficult time standing up. The subject was found to be under the influence of an alcoholic beverage to the point he was a physical danger to himself. The subject refused medical attention. Occurred on 08/30/08 at 5:38 p.m. L. THEO BELLMONT HALL, 2109 San Jacinto Public Intoxication / Possession of Another's Driver's License: A UT student, who was under the age of 21, was found having difficulty sitting in a 9th floor chair during the football game. The student could not remember where he lived. The student was found to be in possession of another's driver's license. The student tried on several occasions to place his arms around the officer who eventually restrained his arms as the student was found to be under the influence of an alcoholic beverage to the point he was a danger to himself. Occurred on 08/30/08 at 8:15 p.m. MAIN BUILDING, #1 South Mall Theft: A black i-phone enclosed in a cell-phone cover was stolen from a desk inside a 1st floor open office suite cubicle. The cubicle is equipped with a lockable sliding glass door that was left open while the property owner attended a nearby going away party for a co-worker. Loss value: $229.00. Occurred on 08/29/08 between 2:00 p.m. and 4:00 p.m. Crime Prevention Tip: As you see in today's edition, the influx of students to the 40 Acres also brings an influx of property which no doubt leads to more theft opportunities. These theft opportunities lead to more people coming to campus to take advantage of such opportunities. You may also notice the amount of criminal trespass warnings that were issued. That tells me that our community is reporting suspicious activity and our officers are doing their job, but we need to do more as a community to limit these thefts. We can start by securing our property when we are not in possession of it. In this case, the simple act of closing and securing the glass door may have been just enough to deter the thief. Keeping the cell phone with you would have certainly prevented this theft. By keeping your cell phone on your person, you afford yourself the opportunity to call UTPD in the event you witness a crime or suspicious activity. MIKE A. MYERS TRACK & SOCCER STADIUM, 2200 Robert Dedman Theft: An orange colored Lone-Star golf cart was stolen from a secured gated area located in the southeast corner of the stadium. When awakened by medical staff, the student refused medical assistance and was very uncooperative. The student was found to be under the influence of an alcoholic beverage to the point he was a physical endangerment to himself. Occurred on 08/30/08 at 8:37 p.m. NORTH END ZONE - TEXAS MEMORIAL STADIUM, 405 East 23rd Street Criminal Trespass Warning: A non-UT subject was found wandering around inside the fenced-in construction area. Occurred on: 08/30/08 at 2:36 a.m. 200 East 21st Street Consumption of Alcohol by a Minor: A UT student, who was under the age of 21, was found leaning beside a parked Chevrolet Tahoe. The student was experiencing an extreme involuntary physical reaction to the over-consumption of an alcoholic beverage. The student was found to be under the influence of an alcoholic beverage to the point he was a danger to himself – however, he was accompanied by the driver of the Tahoe; a sober adult who agreed to take care, custody and control of him. Occurred on 08/30/08 at 1:15 a.m. 200 East 24th Street Leaving the Scene Collision: A parked and unattended silver 2004 Honda was struck in the left quarter panel. The driver of the striking vehicle did not leave identifying information. At the time of the report, a 1988 Honda was found parked to the left of the struck vehicle. The 1988 Honda had fresh damage to its right front quarter panel. The damage to the 1988 Honda matched in height, extent of damage and paint color transfer to the damage on the 2004 Honda. We in law enforcement call this a clue. The owner of the 1988 Honda did not recall striking the 2004 Honda, but could not account for the fresh damage on his vehicle.
