WELCH HALL, 105 East 24th Street Burglary of a Coin Operated Machine: An unknown tool was used to pry open the door to sanitary napkin dispenser located inside the 3rd floor women's restroom. Reported on 09/15/08 at 6:30 p.m. SIMKINS HALL DORMITORY, 2501 San Jacinto Theft: A red Ozone 500 bicycle was stolen while it was secured with a chain lock to a bicycle rack. The bicycle was missing one of its pedals when it was stolen. Loss value: $60.00. Occurred between 09/05/08 at 2:30 p.m. and 09/15/08 at 10:07 a.m. 2500 Whitis Theft: A UT Officer observed a UT student run from one end of a bicycle rack to the other end of the bicycle rack with a bicycle seat. The student met with another student who was standing beside the second student's bicycle. The students were stopped as the first student was attempting to affix the bicycle seat to the bicycle belonging to the second student. The first student stated they were only checking to see if the seat post would fit her friend's bicycle as her friend's bicycle had previously had its seat and seat post stolen. Both students stated they planned to return the seat and seat post to the bicycle they had taken it from. One seat and seat post was recovered while the second student's seat remains missing. Recovery value: $10.00. Loss value: $10.00. Occurred on 09/16/08 at 9:15 a.m. Crime Prevention Tip: Bicycle thieves, some of which are victims of other thefts, steal parts from bicycles. They continue committing thefts of bicycle parts until they have enough parts to put a complete bicycle together. This results in multiple victims for one complete bicycle. To prevent this we revert to the same tips we have been recommending – use two different types of locks. The minimum should be a u-lock to secure the frame and one wheel to the bicycle rack. The second lock, a cable lock, should be threaded through the frame, the other wheel, the bicycle seat, any other bicycle add-on and the bicycle rack. As always, register your bicycle with UT Parking and Transportation Services. In this case, the student was able to prove ownership of her bicycle as she had registered her bicycle with P&T.
