Report for 09/17/2008

Campus Watch: Below is a summary of campus activity reported to or observed by the University Police Department patrol officers between Tuesday, 09/16/08 and Wednesday, 09/17/08. If you have any information pertaining to any of these cases or other criminal or suspicious activity, please contact the UT Police Department at 512-471-4441. ADMINISTRATIVE MESSAGE The University of Texas Police Department will be hosting the 5th annual Citizen's Police Academy. The CPA will be held every Monday night beginning October 6th 2008. The academy will end November 17, 2008 with a graduation ceremony. If you are interested in attending the next Citizen's Police Academy, contact Capt. Don Verett at 232-6444 or don.verett@austin.utexas.edu. ALMETRIS DUREN RESIDENCE HALL, 2624 Whitis Suspicious Activity: A UT student reported seeing a subject looking at the bicycles secured to the bicycle rack located on the east side of the dormitory. The student stopped to watch the subject who seemed unconcerned that the student was watching him. The student went into Duren Hall to use a telephone to report the incident to the police. The student looked out the window to observe the subject riding away on a black bicycle. The subject was last seen riding the bicycle southbound in the 2500 block of San Antonio Street. The subject was described as a white male, approximately 50 years old, 5'11” tall, 165 lbs with a short gray beard. The subject was wearing a brown hat, dark, neutral colored clothing and closed toe shoes. The owner of the bicycle has yet to report the bicycle as stolen. Occurred on 09/16/08 at 8:10 a.m. Crime Prevention Tip: The student who reported this incident did several things very, very well. The student recognized suspicious activity – many thieves rely on people not paying attention or not caring which is why they commit such crimes during daylight hours with little regard for witnesses. The student watched the subject and obtained a good description of the subject. When the subject left on a bicycle the student followed at a safe distance and was able to give the last known location of the subject. The only recommendation I would have is that every student should carry a cellular telephone with them at all times. They should also program the UTPD dispatcher number into their cellular telephone. The UTPD dispatcher number is 512-471-4441. Another option for reporting such activity is one of the many “Police Help” call boxes located around the campus.
