Campus Watch: Below is a summary of campus activity reported to or observed by the University Police Department patrol officers between Friday, 09/26/08 and Tuesday 09/30/08. The 25th Annual National Night Out is Tuesday, October 7, 2008 at the Gregory Gym Aquatic Complex and The Brackenridge Apartment Complex Jasper Park. DARRELL K ROYAL TX MEMORIAL STADIUM (North end Zone), 405 East 23rd Street Possession of Alcohol by a Minor: A non-UT subject, who was under the age of 21, was found attempting to enter the stadium with a suspicious bulge in his pants pocket. The bulge turned out to be a ½ pint bottle of rum. Occurred on 09/27/08 at 4:35 p.m. DARRELL K ROYAL TX MEMORIAL STADIUM, 2200 Robert Dedman Public Intoxication / Possession of Another's Driver's License: A non-UT subject, who was under the age of 21, was reported as passed out inside a women's restroom. The subject wanted to know why the officers were “mad” as he had not done anything wrong. When asked about the obvious wet spot on the front of his pants, the subject replied he “had to go to the bathroom” so he did. The subject was found to be under the influence of an alcoholic beverage to the point he was a danger to himself. The subject was also found to be in possession of another's current and valid driver's license. Occurred on 09/27/08 at 6:10 p.m. DARRELL K ROYAL TX MEMORIAL STADIUM, 2200 Robert Dedman Public Intoxication: A UT student was found slumped over on a bleacher seat. The student's head was nestled against the hind quarters of the football patron who was standing in front of him. The student was very slow in responding to the officers. The student was found to be under the influence of an alcoholic beverage to the point he was a danger to himself and the sanctity of other patron. This was no doubt the subject's crowning achievement for the day. Occurred on 09/27/08 at 3:20 p.m. DARRELL K ROYAL TX MEMORIAL STADIUM, 2200 Robert Dedman Consumption of Alcohol by a Minor: A UT student, who was under the age of 21, was found staggering in the lobby of the stadium. The student was found to have consumed alcoholic beverages, but not to the point she was a danger to herself or others. Occurred on 09/27/08 at 3:46 p.m. HOMER RAINEY HALL, 200 West 21st Street Criminal Mischief: An unknown subject(s) damaged a light pole and the leg to a cement bench when the bench was forced against the light pole. Repair cost: $50.00. Discovered on 09/27/08 at 12:50 a.m. JACK S. BLANTON MUSEUM OF ART, 200 East Martin Luther King Criminal Trespass Warning (2 counts): Two non-UT subjects were found skateboarding and videotaping their stunts while on the plaza located on the west side of the museum. Both subjects were issued written criminal trespass warnings as skateboarding is a violation of UT Parking and Transportation regulations. Occurred on 09/28/08 at 7:15 p.m. JESSE H. JONES COMMUNICATION CENTER (BLDG. C), 2504-C Whitis Theft: A grey Diamondback bicycle frame and rear wheel were stolen while the front wheel was secured with a u-lock to a bicycle rack located on the east side of the building. Loss value: $125.00. Occurred between 09/28/08 at 4:00 a.m. and 09/29/08 at 2:50 p.m. JESTER CENTER ACADEMIC, 201 East 21st Street Theft: A brown Fossil wallet containing $30 in cash, two credit cards and two identification cards was stolen when it was left on a flight of exterior steps located on the north side of the building. Loss value: $40.00. Occurred on 09/26/08 between 11:40 a.m. and 11:45 a.m. KINSOLVING DORMITORY, 2605 Whitis Theft: A green Specialized bicycle frame and rear tire were stolen while the frame was secured with a cable lock to a bicycle rack located on the west side of the dormitory. The bicycle's front wheel was not stolen as it was secured with a u-lock to the bicycle rack. Loss value: $350.00. Occurred between 09/19/08 at 8:00 a.m. and 09/21/08 at 7:00 p.m. KINSOLVING DORMITORY, 2605 Whitis Theft: A green Schwinn bicycle was stolen while it was secured with a u-lock to a bicycle rack located on the west side of the dormitory. Loss value: $200.00. Occurred between 09/27/08 at 11:00 p.m. and 09/28/08 at 9:45 p.m. LITTLEFIELD FOUNTAIN, 200 West 21st Street Criminal Trespass Warning (2 counts): A UT staff member and a non-UT subject were reported as wearing their unmentionables while swimming in the fountain. The responding officer arrived and quickly located the two subjects who were dripping the evidence of their escapade on the pavement. Both subjects were issued written criminal trespass warnings as entering UT fountains is a violation of UT Regent's Rules and Regulations. Occurred on 09/26/08 at 9:37 p.m. LIVING LEARNING CENTER C, 2610 Whitis Public Intoxication: A UT student, who was under the age of 21, was found unconscious on a couch located inside a common lounge area. The student was found to be under the influence of an alcoholic beverage to the point Austin-Travis County Emergency Medical Services needed to transport the student to a local hospital for treatment. Occurred on 09/27/08 at 2:50 p.m. MUSIC BUILDING & RECITAL HALL, 2406 Robert Dedman Theft: A carrying case containing a violin and a bow was stolen when it was left inside an unsecured locker. Loss value: $13,300.00. Occurred between 09/25/08 at 9:30 a.m. and 09/26/08 at 10:30 a.m. SAN JACINTO RESIDENCE HALL, 309 East 21st Street Public Intoxication: A UT student, who had obviously been celebrating her 21st birthday, was found “slumped over” on a bus stop bench located on the north side of the dormitory. The student was being tended to by two of her friends. While the student was found to be under the influence of an alcoholic beverage to the point she was a danger to herself, she was turned over to her friend who was willing to accept care, custody and control of her. Occurred on 09/28/08 at 3:14 a.m. SID RICHARDSON HALL, 2300 Red River Criminal Trespass Warning: A non-UT subject was found sleeping in front of the main entrance to unit #2. The subject was issued a written criminal trespass warning. Occurred on 09/26/08 at 7:23 a.m. T.S. PAINTER HALL, 103 West 24th Street Burglary: An unknown subject(s) entered a 3rd floor room and caused damage to a computer security system in what appeared to be an obvious attempt to steal the computer. A security alarm system was activated and aided in the prevention of the theft. Repair cost: $35.00. Occurred on 09/27/08 at 1:50 p.m. TOWNES HALL, 727 East Dean Keeton Public Intoxication / Failure to Identify: A UT student, was found passed-out on a flight of first floor stairs. The student initially provided officer with a fictitious name. There was evidence on the student's pants that beer is rented, not owned. The student also had evidence on his shirt of having suffered an extreme involuntary physical reaction to the over-consumption of an alcoholic beverage. The subject had consumed enough alcohol to convince himself of being a world traveler as he stated he was in Belgium. After being taken into custody, the student refused to provide his identifying information. Occurred on 09/29/08 at 4:08 a.m. TRINITY GARAGE, 1815 Trinity Assist Outside Agency: A non-UT subject was reported as lying down on the sidewalk located on the west side of the garage. The subject was found to have an outstanding outside agency arrest warrant for public intoxication. Occurred on 09/29/08 at 7:05 a.m. UFCU DISCH-FALK FIELD, 1300 East Martin Luther King Public Intoxication: A non-UT subject was found passed-out on the south side of the stadium. The subject was unsure of where he was, what day it was and what he had been doing prior to passing out. The subject did state he was looking for a bank and was “trying to find the insurance.” The subject was found to be under the influence of an alcoholic beverage to the point he was a danger to himself. Occurred on 09/28/08 at 4:14 a.m. UT ADMINISTRATION PARKING GARAGE, 1616 Guadalupe Criminal Mischief: Grey vehicle decoration paint was used to make markings on the trunk of a 2007 Toyota Solara while the vehicle was parked in the parking garage. Removal cost: $10.00. Occurred between 09/26/08 at 10:00 p.m. and 09/28/08 at 7:00 p.m. WEST MALL OFFICE BUILDING, #3 West Mall Theft: A blue Trek 1000 bicycle was stolen while the bicycle was secured to a newspaper vending machine located on the north side of the building. The bicycle was secured with a cable lock that in-turn was affixed to a u-lock. The u-lock was secured to the newspaper vending machine. The cable lock was cut which freed the bicycle from the vending machine. Loss value: $750.00. Occurred between 09/26/08 at 1:30 p.m. and 09/29/08 at 7:05 a.m. Crime Prevention Tip: As you have read in today's edition of the Campus Watch, you have seen that our minimum recommendation of using a u-lock does not guarantee that your bicycle will not be stolen. Even using the maximum recommendation of using both a u-lock and a cable lock will not guarantee your bicycle will not be stolen. Using two different locks will provide you maximum security if you use the locks properly. You always want to make sure both locks are used to secure the bicycle frame and wheels to the frame. The u-lock can be used to secure the frame and one wheel to the bicycle rack while the cable lock can be used to secure the rear wheel and frame to the bicycle rack. 21st Street and San Jacinto Assist Outside Agency: A non-UT subject was stopped for speeding and turning from the wrong lane against a red light where turning on a red light is prohibited. The subject was found to have an outstanding outside agency arrest warrant for Failure to Maintain a Clear and Assured Distance. Occurred on 09/27/08 at 4:35 a.m. 24th Street and San Jacinto Assist Outside Agency: A non-UT subject was stopped for running a stop sign and then a standing red light while riding a bicycle. The subject was found to have an outstanding outside agency arrest warrant for public intoxication. Occurred on 09/26/08 at 7:31 p.m. 200 East 21st Street Consumption of Alcohol by a Minor 2 counts): Two UT students, who were under the age of 21, were identified as passengers in a vehicle that was stopped for speeding. Both students were found to have consumed alcoholic beverages. Occurred on 09/28/08 at 3:52 a.m. 300 East 23rd Street Public Intoxication / Criminal Trespass Warning: A non-UT subject was found passed-out while lying on a bus stop bench. The subject believed he was at 38th Street and Cameron Road. The subject was found to be under the influence of an alcoholic beverage to the point he was a danger to himself. The subject was very confrontational and refused to follow any of the officer's directions. In addition to other law enforcement actions taken, the subject was issued a written criminal trespass warning. Occurred on 09/29/08 at 1:18 a.m. 400 West 22nd Street Driving While Intoxicated: A UT student was stopped for running a red light while driving a gold colored 2000 Lexus. The student was found to be under the influence of an alcoholic beverage to the point she was driving while intoxicated. Occurred on 09/30/08 at 3:01 a.m. 500 Colorado Public Intoxication: A non-UT subject was found passed-out while seated and leaning against a wall. The subject was found to be under the influence of an alcoholic beverage to the point he was a physical danger to himself. Occurred on 09/28/08 at 3:21 a.m. 2200 Leona Criminal Trespass: A non-UT subject was found selling parking spaces in a vacant lot belonging to The University of Texas at Austin. The subject was issued a written criminal trespass warning. Occurred on 09/27/08 at 12:34 p.m. 2000 Speedway Leaving the Scene Collision: A witness reported seeing a beige 1985 Chevrolet 4-door back into the tailgate of a black Chevrolet 1500 pick-up truck. The driver of the of the striking vehicle left the are without leaving driver information. Repair cost: $900.00. Reported on 09/29/08 at 6:21 p.m. 2500 Whitis Public Intoxication: A non-UT subject, who was under the age of 21, was found passed-out on the sidewalk with his shirt pulled over his head. The subject was unable to answer questions in any coherent manner. The subject was found to be under the influence of an alcoholic beverage to the point he was a danger to himself. Occurred on 09/30/08 at 2:13 a.m. Somewhere Between Trinity Parking Garage and an Unknown Austin Neighborhood Theft: A UT student met a non-UT student during a pick-up game at the Gregory Gym basketball courts. After the game, the non-UT student asked for a ride home. Prior to leaving the gym, the student checked his belongings and found his cash was still inside his bag. The student and the non-UT subject walked to the student's dormitory room where they met the student's roommate. The three then walked to the roommate's vehicle that was parked in the Trinity Parking Garage. The non-UT subject rode in the back seat with the student's bag. After dropping the subject off in an unknown neighborhood, the student checked his bag and found his $240.00 in cash had been stolen. The non-UT subject was described as a Hispanic male about 5'-6" tall and 125lbs with short dark hair. The subject went by the name “Jeff.” Loss value: $250.00. Reported on 09/29/08 at 1:04 a.m. CAMPUS WIDE: Non-Criminal Calls: In addition to the above criminal cases, The University of Texas Police Department responded to 67 alarm calls, 2 suspicious people calls, 8 public assist requests, 1 light survey, 2 medical emergency calls, 9 unsecured door reports, 1 welfare concern, 1 accidental damage report and 1 suspicious activity report between 09/26/08 and 09/30/08. UTPD generally schedules a Defensive Driving Class approximately once a month – based on need. The classes meet in the University Police Building, Room 1.318, located at 2201 Robert Dedman Dr (east of Memorial Stadium). The cost for the course is $25.00 (check or cash) payable on class date. If paying in cash, please bring the exact amount because change may not be available. You will also need to bring your driver's license.
