When the subject observed the officer's marked patrol car, he quickly hid behind a short cement wall. When stopped, the subject stated he was thinking of buying a new bicycle and wanted to see the various models. When asked about any items the subject was in possession of, he replied he had some “clippers” but those were his. The clippers were in fact a large pair of bolt cutters that the subject had hidden down his overalls. The subject was issued a written criminal trespass warning. The bicycle racks did not show any signs of cut bicycle locks, but two unsecured bicycles were found in the racks. Occurred on 10/13/08 at 3:00 a.m. Crime Prevention Tip: It is easy to imagine this subject's intentions to be that of theft. It is also easy to see how quickly this type of theft can happen. With a pair of bolt cutters, which are obviously easy to conceal, a thief can quickly cut off a thick cable lock. Once more, if bicycles are left unattended, why bother cutting locks off. People, use a quality u-lock to secure your bicycle and report suspicious activity to the police department.
