If you have any information pertaining to any of these cases or other criminal or suspicious activity, please contact the UT Police Department at 512-471-4441. Due to the recent APD cases involving UT students around the University of Texas, UTPD would like to remind all female faculty, staff and students about the FREE Women's Self Defense class that is currently being offered. To view the press release information from the Austin Police Department regarding these cases, visit http://www.ci.austin.tx.us/police/apd_news.htm and scroll to the title Sex Crimes detectives seek assistance -- September 30, 2008. RAD Program For Women, Now Available (Classes are FREE) Advanced RAD Classes Being Held for RAD Class Graduates The RAD program is a 16-hour course of realistic self-defense tactics and techniques for women covering assault prevention and risk reduction while progressing on to basic hands-on defense training. http://www.utexas.edu/police/rad/ DARRELL K ROYAL TX MEMORIAL STADIUM, 405 East 23rd Street Criminal Trespass (2 counts) / Consumption of Alcohol by a Minor (2 counts): Two non-UT subjects were observed climbing over the fence to enter the stadium. Both subjects were under the age of 21 and found to have consumed alcoholic beverages. Occurred on 10/17/08 at 2:32 a.m. E.P. SCHOCH BUILDING, #6 East Mall Suspicious Person: A UT staff member reported an unidentified subject opened her office door and entered her office. When the subject saw the UT staff member he stated he was looking for “Mary” and told the staff member she did not need to call anyone. The subject then left the building and began to walk south on Speedway. The subject was described as a white male, 6'0" tall, overweight, wearing a UT longhorn ball cap, a tan shirt with an unknown logo on the shirt. The subject had keys hanging out of his pants pocket. Occurred on 10/16/08 at 1:06 p.m. Crime Prevention Tip: This is a common practice of office thieves. They will blend in as a member of the UT Community, enter what they believe are unoccupied offices and commit a theft. If they are confronted, they simply state they are looking for someone (or for the restroom) then they leave the area. It is not known if the person in this case is a thief or not, but the staff member did a good job. She called UTPD as soon as she could. LAVACA BUILDING, 220 West 7th Street Criminal Mischief / Public Intoxication / Assist Outside Agency: A non-UT subject was stopped by a UT non-commissioned guard officer after the subject damaged two light fixtures located on the Colorado Building. The subject was found to be under the influence of an alcoholic beverage to the point he was a physical endangerment to himself and others. The subject was also found to have two outstanding outside agency arrest warrants for Failure to Maintain Financial Responsibility and A Pedestrian Crossing Mid-block. Repair cost: $200.00. Occurred on 10/17/08 2:40 p.m. LITTLEFIELD FOUNTAIN, 200 West 21st Street Public Intoxication / Possession of a Controlled Substance: A non-UT subject was found sitting on a bench near the fountain. The amount of sway in the subject's sitting posture coupled with his difficulty in coming to his feet may have suggested an inner ear infection was affecting his equilibrium, but other classic signs such as disarranged clothes, bloodshot eyes, lack of knowledge of the date, time or location - oh, and that all too familiar odor emanating from his breath - pointed to public intoxication as the culprit for his altered balance. The subject was found to be in possession of a piece of tin foil that contained two pills that tested positive for amphetamines. Occurred on 10/17/08 at 2:17 a.m. T.S. PAINTER HALL, 103 West 24th Street Theft: A black K2 bicycle was stolen while it was secured with a cable lock to the bicycle racks located on the east side of the building. Loss value: $200.00. Occurred on 10/16/08 between 6:00 p.m. and 9:49 p.m. UNION BUILDING, #4 West Mall Burglary of Coin Operated Machine: The locks were pried off of the door to a sanitary napkin coin operated machine located inside a 3rd floor women's restroom. A single quarter was stolen form the machine. Loss value: $.25 Occurred between 10/15/08 at 1:00 p.m. and 10/16/08 10:43 a.m. Crime Prevention Tip: I am confident the thief in this case was after well more than twenty-five cents. Of course it cost the thief nothing to break into the machine so even a quarter is nothing but profit. This mentality holds true for office thieves, car burglars etc. W.R. WOOLRICH LABS, 210 East 24th Street Criminal Mischief: Three screws that secured a metal door vent to a 1st floor office. The vent was bent backward toward the fourth vent screw that was still affixing the vent to the door. At this time, it is unknown if someone entered the room through the damaged door vent or if any items were stolen form the office. Repair cost: $20.00. Reported on 10/16/08 at 3:56 p.m. CAMPUS WIDE: Non-Criminal Calls: In addition to the above criminal cases, The University of Texas Police Department responded to 13 alarm calls, 2 suspicious activity reports report, 4 unsecured door reports, 1 public assist request and 2 medical assist reports between 10/16/08 and 10/17/08.
