Campus Watch: Below is a summary of campus activity reported to or observed by the University Police Department patrol officers between Friday, 10-17-08 and Wednesday, 10-22-08. If you have any information pertaining to any of these cases or other criminal or suspicious activity, please contact the UT Police Department at 512-471-4441. * * * * * ADMINISTRATIVE MESSAGE * * * * * The University of Texas Police Department is seeking the public's assistance in the following case: On 10-21-08 at 10:58 AM officers responded to a reported fire at Parlin Hall. Officers soon discovered a fire inside the 3rd floor women's restroom. The University of Texas Police Department is asking if anyone has any information pertaining to this incident contact the Criminal Investigations Unit at 512-232-9640 BRACKENRIDGE APARTMENTS, 3350 Lake Austin Blvd Theft: A grey Trek mountain bicycle was reported stolen after being left unsecured in front of an apartment. Loss value: $150.00. Occurred on: 10-20-08, between 7:30 AM and 8:30 PM. BRACKENRIDGE APARTMENTS, 3350 Lake Austin Blvd Theft: A blue Mongoose mountain bicycle was stolen after being left unsecured outside of an apartment. During the investigation, the officer learned an unknown subject rode up on a small black bicycle and then took the Mongoose and rode away. The unknown subject was described as: Black male, 5'-05", and was last seen wearing dark colored shorts and a white shirt. Loss value: $50.00. Occurred on: 10-20-08, at 2:30 PM. BRACKENRIDGE APARTMENTS, 3350 Lake Austin Blvd Recovered Stolen Property: UT police recovered a boy's Mirra bicycle that had been left at the scene of another theft. During the investigation, the officer discovered that the owner had taken the time to mark the property with his name in permanent marker. Recovered value: $50.00. Occurred on: 10-20-08, at 5:47 PM. CHEMICAL AND PETROLEUM ENGINEERING, 200 East Dean Keeton Criminal Trespass Warning / Assist Outside Agency: A non-UT subject was discovered sleeping on a bench near the south exterior doors of the building. During the investigation, the officer soon learned that the subject had two outstanding outside agency arrest warrants. The subject was taken into custody for the warrants and was transported to Central Booking. In addition to the law enforcement actions taken, the subject was issued a written Criminal Trespass Warning. Occurred on: 10-21-08, at 1:05 AM. DARRELL K ROYAL TX MEMORIAL STADIUM, 2200 Robert Dedman Dr. Theft: A brown leather wallet containing $482.00 in cash, several credit cards, and several forms of personal identification was reported stolen during the Texas football game. During the investigation, the officer learned that the victim had gone to the concession stand outside of section 29 to purchase a bottle of water. Upon returning to his section and seat, the victim discovered an unknown subject had "lifted" his wallet from his rear pocket. Loss value: $506.00. Occurred on: 10-18-08, between 8:35 PM and 8:40 PM. DARRELL K ROYAL TX MEMORIAL STADIUM, 2200 Robert Dedman Dr. Consumption of Alcohol by a Minor / Possession of Alcohol by a Minor: A UT student was seen attempting to conceal a total of five 2 oz. Jell-O shots in his front pants pocket. During the investigation, the officer determined that the student was under the legal age of 21 and had also been consuming alcohol. The subject was issued a citation for Consumption of Alcohol by a Minor. Occurred on: 10-18-08, at 7:09 PM. DARRELL K ROYAL TX MEMORIAL STADIUM, 2200 Robert Dedman Dr. Public Intoxication: A UT student was discovered passed out next to the exterior gate. During the investigation, the subject's friend approached the officers and was willing to take him home. The passed out student was able to wake up, but was unsure as to where was. The officers took the subject into custody for Public Intoxication and transported him to Central Booking. Occurred on: 10-18-08, at 7:58 PM. DARRELL K ROYAL TX MEMORIAL STADIUM, 2200 Robert Dedman Dr. Theft: A UT subject reported the theft of brown leather wallet, $80.00 in cash, several credit cards, and several forms of personal identification. The subject stated that he had removed to wallet to retrieve his football ticket and placed his wallet back into his rear pants pocket. The victim realized his property was gone when he attempted to purchase a bottle of water. Loss value: $90.00. Occurred on: 10-18-08, between 6:40 PM and 7:10 PM. Crime Prevention Tip: This is the second reported case of theft where a person's pocket was picked. These types of thieves thrive in large crowds with lots of activity. It is very simple to bump into someone and remove that person's wallet. While getting ready for the tailgate parties take a few extra minutes and clean out your wallet. Take with you those things that will have to have at the event: one credit card and your driver's license. Take a large rubber band and wrap it around your wallet. This will create some resistance when someone is attempting to life your wallet. Ladies, carry a small purse with only those items you must have. Large purses and bags make for an easy target. DARRELL K ROYAL TX MEMORIAL STADIUM, 2200 Robert Dedman Dr. In addition to the above cases there were 4 additional subjects that were arrested for Public Intoxication, One student referred to the Dean of Students for his behavior, another student for Consumption of Alcohol / Possession of Alcohol by a Minor / Possession of more than one Valid ID. GARRISON HALL, #3 East Mall Burglary of Coin-Operated Machine: A UT staff member reported an unknown subject had forced open a coin-operated machine located inside a third floor women's restroom. The unknown subject removed an unknown amount of coins and products. Loss value: Unknown at this time. Discovered on: 10-21-08, at 1:09 PM. JESSE H. JONES COMMUNICATIONS CENTER, 2504-A Whitis Ave Criminal Mischief: A UT staff member observed an unknown subject smirking at her as she approached her parked vehicle. The staff member soon discovered one of her political bumper stickers had been altered. The unknown subject was described as: White male, short blonde hair, 5'-10", skinny. The subject was last seen wearing an orange shirt and shorts. Occurred on: 10-19-08, between 9:30 AM and 4:45 PM. JESTER WEST DORMITORY, 201 East 21st Street Theft: A silver IPod Touch was reported stolen from inside a closed desk located inside an unsecured 2nd floor office. Loss value: $250.00. Occurred between: 10-21-08, at 6:30 PM and 10-22-08, at 9:00 AM. LITTLEFIELD HOUSE, 302 West 24th Street Criminal Trespass Warning: A non-UT subject was discovered sleeping inside a window well located on the west side of the building. During the investigation, the officer issued the subject a written Criminal Trespass Warning and escorted him from the area. Occurred on: 10-20-08, at 8:42 AM. PARKING LOT 102, 2200 Comal Public Intoxication: A non-UT subject was observed stumbling along the roadway while extending his thumb in a failed attempt to get a ride. During the investigation, the officers detected a very strong odor of alcohol on the subject's breath and noted that he needed support to maintain his balance. The subject was taken in to custody for Public Intoxication and was transported to Central Booking. Occurred on: 10-18-08, at 11:39 PM. PARLIN HALL, #2 South Mall Arson: UT police officers responded to Parlin Hall on a reported fire. Upon arrival the officers soon discovered a fire had been started inside the 3rd floor women's restroom. As the investigation continued, the officers learned a second fire had also been started in the 1st floor women's restroom. The Austin Fire Department arrived and had the fires extinguished. Loss value: Unknown at this time. Occurred on: 10-21-08, at 10:58 AM. PERRY-CASTANEDA LIBRARY, 101 East 21st Street Theft: A pink leopard-print Sony laptop computer, charger, and carrying case were stolen from a secured locker located on the 3rd floor. Loss value: $710.00. Occurred on: 10-21-08, between 5:45 PM and 6:15 PM. PETER T. FLAWN ACADEMIC CENTER, #2 West Mall Theft: A black MacBook laptop computer was reported stolen after being left unattended inside a 2nd floor study area. Loss value: $300.00. Occurred on: 10-20-08, between 8:45 AM and 9:50 AM. TEXAS SWIM CENTER, 1900 RED River Criminal Trespass Warning: A non-UT subject was observed entering into the building. When stopped the subject asked to get a drink of water. A UT staff member recognized the subject as the same subject who had been at the TSC the day before and ended up going to the hospital. During the investigation, the officer issued the subject a written Criminal Trespass Warning and escorted her from the area. Occurred on: 10-21-08, at 3:47 PM. UNION BUILDING #4 West Mall Criminal Mischief / Disorderly Conduct Exposure: A non-UT subject entered into Texas Union Building yelling obscenities in an effort to publicly display his wordsmithing abilities. The subject was told to leave by a UT staff member. The subject continued his oral assault, then grabbed an awning and pulled it down. Several responding UT police officers observed the subject standing in the middle of Guadalupe attempting to stop traffic with body parts that were best left in the dark and not brought into the light of day. The subject was taken into custody for Criminal Mischief / Disorderly Conduct Exposure and was transported to Central Booking. Occurred on: 10-21-08, at 4:16 PM. 300 BLOCK EAST 21st STREET Driving While Intoxicated / Collision: A non-UT subject was observed attempting to operate his vehicle while driving it backwards. Several unidentified subject kept yelling at the subject to stop before he hit a parked vehicle. The subject ignored them and struck a parked vehicle and continued to drive backwards. During the investigation, the officers detected a very strong odor of alcohol on the driver's breath. The subject had difficulty maintaining his balance. The officers administered the Standardized Field Sobriety tests to the subject. The driver displayed several clues that indicated he was intoxicated. The subject was taken into custody for Driving While Intoxicated and was transported to Central Booking. Occurred on: 10-18-08, at 11:09 PM. CAMPUS WIDE: Non-Criminal Calls: In addition to the above criminal cases, The University of Texas Police Department responded to 68 alarm calls, 12 suspicious activity reports, 25 unsecured door reports, 5 public assist requests and 2 medical assists reports between 10-17-08 and 10-22-08.
