Report for 10/27/2008

Campus Watch: Below is a summary of campus activity reported to or observed by the University Police Department patrol officers between Friday, 10/24/08 and Monday, 10/27/08. If you have any information pertaining to any of these cases or other criminal or suspicious activity, please contact the UT Police Department at 512-471-4441. DARRELL K ROYAL TX MEMORIAL STADIUM, 2200 Robert Dedman Assault with Bodily Injury / Public Intoxication: A UT student was reported to event staff personnel as being offensive as he was yelling profanities. After the student refused to change his word selections, another patron at the football game told the student to “quiet down.” The student furthered his offensiveness by pushing that patron down a row of stadium seats; not once but twice. The patron received a cut on his shin during one of the falls. The patron defended himself by hitting the student in the mouth. Oh, my apologies, did I fail to mention the student was found to be under the influence of an alcoholic beverage to the point that he was a danger to others and, as it turned out, to himself. Occurred on 10/25/08 at approximately 4:00 p.m. Crime Prevention Tip: All too often, the overconsumption of alcoholic beverages leads to other criminal activity. In this case, I doubt the student would have committed the assault had he know when to say when. Such knowledge is a valuable tool in keeping you happy, safe and out of jail. DARRELL K ROYAL TX MEMORIAL STADIUM, 2200 Robert Dedman Possession of Alcohol by a Minor: A non-UT subject, who was under the age of 21, was observed entering the stadium with a suspicious bulge in his pocket. The subject was found to be in possession of a flask containing an alcoholic beverage. Occurred on 10/25/08 at 4:15 p.m. DARRELL K ROYAL TX MEMORIAL STADIUM, 2200 Robert Dedman Possession of Alcohol by a Minor: A UT student, who was under the age of 21, was found entering the stadium with a bulge in the top of his right boot. The bulge was determined to be a flask that contained a “fruity” smelling alcoholic beverage. Occurred on 10/25/08 at 2:30 p.m. DARRELL K ROYAL TX MEMORIAL STADIUM, 2200 Robert Dedman Possession of Alcohol by a Minor: A UT student, who was under the age of 21, was found entering the stadium with a bulge in the top of his left boot. The bulge was determined to be a water bottle containing a brown colored alcoholic beverage. Occurred on 10/25/08 at 5:00 p.m. JESSE H. JONES COMMUNICATIONS CENTER, 2504-B Whitis Theft: A red GT Backwoods bicycle was stolen while it was secured with a cable lock to a bicycle rack located on the south side of building B. Loss value: $350.00. Occurred on 10/26/08 between 7:10 p.m. and 8:50 p.m. Crime Prevention Tip: There are times I want to put quotation marks around the word “secured” in these bicycle theft entries. I say this because the word means secured in name only. Bicycle thieves cut through cable locks as if they weren't even there. Use a quality u-lock to secure your bicycle. JESTER CENTER WEST, 201 East 21st Street Public Intoxication / Consumption of Alcohol by a Minor: A UT student, who was under the age of 21, was observed having a very difficult time maintaining his balance. The student was found to be under the influence of an alcoholic beverage to the point he was a danger to himself. A sober friend of the student was summoned to the scene and took care, custody and control of the student, but only after the student received a citation. Occurred on 10/25/08 at 1:44 a.m. Crime Prevention Tip: By law, a police officer does not need to take you to jail if you are found to be publically intoxicated. Other options include turning you over to a sober adult who is willing to assume custody of you or you can be turned over to a hospital if the situation warrants you needing medical attention. In any event, the officer still has the option to issue you a citation for consumption of alcohol by a minor or even for public intoxication. Trust me, a citation is much better than being booked into jail. Always go out with a sober friend – that person can help keep you safe – that person may even keep you out of jail. LITTLEFIELD HOME, 302 West 24th Street Criminal Trespass: A non-UT subject was found “camping” on the porch of the building. The subject had previously been issued a written criminal trespass warning. Occurred on 10/24/08 at 10:11 p.m. PARKING LOT 115, 1600 East 20th Street Criminal Trespass Warning: A non-UT subject was found placing advertisement flyers on parked cars in the parking lot. Occurred on 10/26/08 at 12:55 a.m. SCHOOL OF SOCIAL WORK BUILDING, 1925 San Jacinto Criminal Mischief: An unknown person(s) used an undetermined implement to break the glass out of a 1st floor window. There were no other indications of a burglary. Repair cost: $100.00. Reported on 10.26.08 at 8:48 a.m. UNIVERSITY TEACHING CENTER, 105 West 21st Street Public Intoxication / Possession of a Fictitious Driver's License: A UT student, who was under the age of 21, was observed walking toward a marked patrol car. When the student saw the patrol car, he turned and attempted to conceal himself behind a nearby building. The student handed the officer a driver's license with a fictitious date of birth. The officer noted the subject's clothing was “mussed” and he was swaying heavily. The student was found to be under the influence of an alcoholic beverage to the point he was a danger to himself. Occurred on 10/25/08 at 2:25 a.m. 100 East 21st Street Leaving the Scene Collision: A witness reported seeing a white Ford pick-up truck strike the left rear quarter panel of a 2002 Toyota sport utility vehicle while the Toyota was parked and unattended. The driver of the Ford left the scene without leaving any driver information. Repair cost: undetermined. Reported on 10/25/08 at 6:13 p.m. 300 East 23rd Street Consumption of Alcohol by a Minor: A UT student, who was under the age of 21, was observed entering a parked golf cart. The student manipulated several levers, bells and whistles on the golf cart in what appeared to be an attempt to start the vehicle. The student was found to have consumed alcoholic beverages, but not to the point he was a danger to himself. Occurred on 10/25/08 at 2:12 a.m. 300 East 23rd Street Disregard the Lawful Order of a Peace Officer: A non-UT subject ducked under barrier tape and between event staff and peace officers in an attempt to cross the roadway that was being cordoned off to allow the UT Marching Band to pass across the roadway. The subject ignored commands of a uniformed police officer to stop. The subject needed to be physically stopped. The subject stated he heard the orders, but believed he should keep crossing the roadway as he was “3/4 of the way through.” Occurred on 10/25/08 at 5:50 p.m. 300 West 24th Street Driving While Intoxicated: A UT student, who was under the age of 21, was stopped for turning left at an intersection where it was posted for no left turn and for driving in a clearly marked bicycle lane while driving a blue 2002 Ford Escape. The student was found to be under the influence of an alcoholic beverage to the point he was driving while intoxicated. Occurred on 10/26/08 at 2:48 a.m. 500 East Dean Keeton Assault – Family Violence: A UT Police Officer initiated a traffic stop for an expired registration sticker. When the stop was made, an additional vehicle pulled over. An investigation showed that the drivers of the two cars were spouses and that they had been in a physical altercation. During the altercation, the husband slammed a bedroom door on the wife's wrist and pushed her. Both actions caused the wife pain and injury. Occurred on 10/26/08 at 2:00 a.m. 2000 San Jacinto Driving While Intoxicated: A UT student was stopped after disregarding a stop sign while driving a black 2004 Subaru. The student was found to be under the influence of an alcoholic beverage to the point he was driving while intoxicated. Occurred on 10/26/08 at 3:45 a.m. 2200 Leona Street Theft by Deception / Criminal Trespass Warning: A non-UT subject was directing vehicles into a vacant lot owned by The University of Texas at Austin. The subject was charging people to parking in the vacant lot. The subject was issued a written criminal trespass warning.
