Campus Watch: Below is a summary of campus activity reported to or observed by the University Police Department patrol officers between Wednesday, 10/29/08 and Thursday, 10/30/08. If you have any information pertaining to any of these cases or other criminal or suspicious activity, please contact the UT Police Department at 512-471-4441. BEAUFORD H. JESTER CENTER, 201 East 21st Street Criminal Trespass Warning / Assist Outside Agency / Possession of Drug Paraphernalia: A non-UT subject was observed pacing around the bicycle racks on the west side of the dormitory. The subject was found to have an outstanding outside agency arrest warrant for the possession of drug paraphernalia. The subject was also found to be in possession of a small glass pipe containing a white powdery residue. The subject was also found to be in possession of several tools commonly used to commit bicycle thefts. In addition to other law enforcement action taken, the subject was issued a written criminal trespass warning. Occurred on 10/30/08 at 12:05 a.m. BEAUFORD H. JESTER CENTER, 201 East 21st Street Assault: Two UT students engaged in an argument that led to one grabbing the other. The student that was grabbed brandished a knife and the encounter ended. No one was injured and both parties refused to file charges. Occurred on 10/29/08 at 9:40 p.m. Crime Prevention Tip: Fortunately in this case, cooler heads prevailed before someone was injured. Sadly, the cooling of said heads did not happen before the two individuals escalated an argument into physical contact. I've long said the best way to avoid a confrontation is to not be there when it happens. If you feel a situation is escalating, then simply leave the area. UNION BUILDING, #4 West Mall Criminal Mischief: An unknown person used an undetermined sharp implement to scratch faint images into the wall of a 2nd floor men's restroom stall. Repair cost: $200.00. Reported on 10/29/08 at 10:09 a.m. UT ADMINISTRATION PARKING GARAGE, 1616 Guadalupe Theft: A yellow Varsity bicycle and a box containing 11 u-locks was stolen form a fenced-in portion of the parking garage. The barbwire around the top of the fence looked as if it had been disturbed by the culprit who was believed to have climbed the fence. Loss value: $220.00. Occurred between 10/09/08 and 10/23/08. UT ELEMENTARY SCHOOL, 2200 East 6th Street Criminal Mischief: An unknown subject(s) removed the wooden lattice form the bottom of one of the school's portable buildings. The building was checked and there were no further signs of criminal activity. Repair cost: $100.00. Discovered on 10/30/08 at 3:30 a.m. CAMPUS WIDE: Non-Criminal Calls: In addition to the above criminal cases, The University of Texas Police Department responded to 11 alarm calls, 1 medical emergency report, 1 unsecured door report, 1 suspicious person report, 1 suspicious substance call, 1 welfare concern reports and 1 public assist request between 10/29/08 and 10/30/08. UTPD generally schedules a Defensive Driving Class approximately once a month – based on need. The classes meet in the University Police Building, Room 1.318, located at 2201 Robert Dedman Dr (east of Memorial Stadium). The cost for the course is $25.00 (check or cash) payable on class date. If paying in cash, please bring the exact amount because change may not be available. You will also need to bring your driver's license. BCAL provides a central resource for UT faculty, students, and staff who may have concerns about the behavior or well-being of another member of the campus community.
