Campus Watch: Below is a summary of campus activity reported to or observed by the University Police Department patrol officers between Monday, 11/03/08 and Tuesday, 11/04/08. If you have any information pertaining to any of these cases or other criminal or suspicious activity, please contact the UT Police Department at 512-471-4441. Lightning Strikes: Shots Fired! The University of Texas at Austin Police Department has made important information available to the UT family in the form of a 20-minute video. This information addresses what to do in the event of an active shooter on campus. You may be surprised how much you can learn from a 20-minute video. To view this video, click on the Shots Fired link on the bottom left side of the UT Police web site: http://www.utexas.edu/police/ You will be asked to log in with your EID to view the video. If you have a faculty, staff or student group and would like a member of UTPD come out to show the video and have a brief discussion highlighting the points covered in the video, contact Officer Pieper (232-9638) or Officer Halstead (232-9634) to ask for the Shots Fired Program. ENGINEERING SCIENCE BUILDING, 2501 Speedway Graffiti: Words written in green and blue ink were discovered inside a first floor classroom. Loss value: $30.00. Discovered on: 11-04-08, at 1:38 AM. JESTER WEST DORMITORY, 201 East 21st Street Theft: A silver and yellow Shimano mountain bicycle was stolen from the bike racks located on the south side of the building after being secured with a self-locking cable lock. Loss value: $100.00. Occurred between: 10-30-08 and 11-01-08. MAIN BUILDING, #1 South Mall Fraudulent Use of or Possession of Identification: A non-UT subject reported a UT student had obtained her Social Security number in order to receive fraudulent financial aid loans. During the investigation, the officer learned that the victim knows the suspect, as the victim gave birth to the suspect 19 years ago. Loss value: $40,000.00. Discovered: October 2008. Crime Prevention Tip: In this case the victim discovered the unauthorized loans while checking her credit history. This is something that is recommended annually. Identity theft is not a new crime; in fact, the State of Texas is ranked second in the United States for new cases of Identify Theft each year. MOORE-HILL DORMITORY, 214 East 21st Street Suspicious Person: A UT student encountered an unknown subject while walking back to her residence. During the encounter, the subject attempted to get the student to purchase $140.00 in magazine subscriptions. When the student told the subject that she was not interested, the unknown subject wanted the subject to go to an ATM and withdraw the money. Again the student told him, "No." The student entered her dormitory and the unknown subject followed her in. An on-duty staff member challenged the unknown subject and the subject left the area. During the investigation, the officers searched the area, but were unable to locate the subject. The unknown subject was described as: White male, 5'-07", blonde hair and facial hair. The subject has a lip ring. Occurred on: 11-03-08, at 2:38 PM. Crime Prevention Tip: This is an annual event at UT. Many of the magazine sellers will use hard sell tactics to achieve the sell by intimidating the student. If you encounter a "salesman" on campus, contact the UT police at 512-471-4441. Keep in mind, the University of Texas prohibits unauthorized vendors from coming onto campus to sell their wares. When these individuals enter onto campus, they subject themselves to arrest. ROBERTS DORMITORY, 303 East 21st Street Criminal Mischief: A UT staff member discovered a large hole in the sheetrock wall located on the second floor. Loss value: $100.00. Discovered on: 11-03-08, at 11:17 AM. SAN ANTONIO PARKING GARAGE, 2420 San Antonio Street Graffiti: Words written in blue spray paint were discovered inside the northwest stairwell. Loss value: $50.00. Discovered on: 11-04-08, at 1:19 AM. 2400 BLOCK GUADALUPE Criminal Trespass Warning: A non-UT subject was approaching UT students and asking them for money. During the investigation, the subject told the officers that he was asking for money in order to ride the bus. As the investigation continued, the officers issued the subject a written Criminal Trespass Warning and escorted him from the area. Occurred on: 11-03-08, at 4:32 PM. This is a reminder to the alarm administrators. There has been an increase in the number of false alarms that have been received by the University of Texas Police Department. Please take a few minutes and review your alarm procedures with you staff and co-workers. CAMPUS WIDE: Non-Criminal Calls: In addition to the above criminal cases, the University of Texas Police Department responded to 26 alarm calls, 1 medical emergency report, 7 unsecured door reports, and 4 suspicious activity reports between 11/03/08 and 11/04/08.
