Campus Watch: Below is a summary of campus activity reported to or observed by the University Police Department patrol officers between Tuesday, 11/04/08 and Wednesday, 11/05/08. If you have any information pertaining to any of these cases or other criminal or suspicious activity, please contact the UT Police Department at 512-471-4441. Lightning Strikes: Shots Fired! The University of Texas at Austin Police Department has made important information available to the UT family in the form of a 20-minute video. This information addresses what to do in the event of an active shooter on campus. You may be surprised how much you can learn from a 20-minute video. To view this video, click on the Shots Fired link on the bottom left side of the UT Police web site: http://www.utexas.edu/police/ You will be asked to log in with your EID to view the video. If you have a faculty, staff or student group and would like a member of UTPD come out to show the video and have a brief discussion highlighting the points covered in the video, contact Officer Pieper (232-9638) or Officer Halstead (232-9634) to request the Shots Fired Program. ALMETRIS DUREN RESIDENCE HALL, 2624 Whitis Possession of Marijuana / Possession of Drug Paraphernalia / Possession of Alcohol by a Minor: Officers responded to a 4th floor dormitory room to investigate a report of the smell of marijuana. Officers arrived to find the room occupied by five students. Officers found a total of two pipes that contained burned marijuana residue, a plastic bowl with marijuana residue, two pill bottles each containing a small amount of marijuana and 3 bottles of beer inside the room. Occurred on 11/05/08 at 12:21 a.m. FRANK C ERWIN SPECIAL EVENTS CENTER, 1701 Red River Criminal Trespass Warning: A non-UT subject was found camping inside and empty ice machine located on the east side of the building. The subject was issued a written a cool criminal trespass warning. Occurred on 11/05/ 08 at 4:48 a.m. JESTER CENTER WEST, 201 East 21st Street Theft: A 30-inch high wood table was stolen from a 2nd floor lounge area. Loss value: $400.00. Occurred between 10/31/08 at 3:30 p.m. and 11/04/08 at 1:48 p.m. MONCRIEF-NEUHAUS ATHLETIC CENTER, 2015 san Jacinto Theft: An E-Z-Go golf cart was stolen while it was left parked next to the building. Loss value: $3,807.38. Occurred between 10/25/08 at 6:00 p.m. and 11/04/08 at 10:26 a.m. MUSIC BUILDING & RECITAL HALL, 2406 Robert Dedman Theft / Failure to Identify / Criminal Trespass: A UT student observed a subject roaming the hallways. After observing the subject, the student entered a 5th floor practice room, placed his backpack on the floor behind a chair and left the room for a few minutes. Upon returning, the student observed the subject exiting a 5th floor room. The student quickly checked for his property and discovered it was missing. The student followed the subject out of the building and began to inquire about his property. When the student started to call the police, the subject pleaded for the student to hang the phone-up and gave the student the camera the subject had stolen form the student. The student continued to inquire about the rest of his property. The subject then agreed to barter the whereabouts of the student's property for the cancelation of the phone call to the police. After the subject showed the student where the student's property was, the subject left the area and the student called the police. The subject was quickly located by the police. The subject gave the responding officer a fictitious name. Once the subject's true identity was learned, it was discovered the subject had previously been issued a written criminal trespass warning. Recovery value: $2,200.00. Occurred on 11/04/08 9:38 a.m. UNION BUILDING, #4 West Mall Criminal Trespass Warning: A non-UT subject was reported as wandering around the building in soiled clothing. Union Building staff members requested a criminal trespass warning be issued as recently they have been finding parts of the facility in a soiled condition. The subject was issued a written criminal trespass warning. Occurred on 11/04/08 at 11:42 a.m. UNIVERSITY ELEMENTARY SCHOOL, 2200 East 6th Street Driving While Intoxicated: A staff member reporting seeing a subject inside a car on the roadway on the west side of the school. The reporting person stated the car had been there for approximately 3 hours. The operator of the car, a non-UT subject, was found passed out in his white 2005 Saturn Ion that was running at the time. The subject was found to be under the influence of alcohol to the point he was driving while intoxicated. Occurred on 11/05/08 at 5:51 a.m. 100 West 6th Street Disorderly Conduct – Fighting with Another (2 counts) / Public Intoxication: Two non-UT subjects were engaged in a fist fight. While the responding officers were attempting to restore peace by ending the fisticuffs, a pedestrian began to yell at the two combatants in an effort to encourage their disorderly ways. Both brawlers were taken into custody for disorderly conduct while the cheerleader was taken into custody for public intoxication as he was found to be under the influence of an alcoholic beverage and was a danger to others through his enticing method of spurring on the fight. Occurred on 11/05/08 at 2:21 a.m. CAMPUS WIDE: Non-Criminal Calls: In addition to the above criminal cases, the University of Texas Police Department responded to 21 alarm calls, 3 medical emergency calls, 1 unsecured door report, 1 motor vehicle collision, 1 accidental damage report, 1 public assist request and 1 suspicious activity report between 11/04/08 and 11/05/08. UTPD generally schedules a Defensive Driving Class approximately once a month – based on need. The classes meet in the University Police Building, Room 1.318, located at 2201 Robert Dedman Dr (east of Memorial Stadium). The cost for the course is $25.00 (check or cash) payable on class date. If paying in cash, please bring the exact amount because change may not be available. You will also need to bring your driver's license. BCAL provides a central resource for UT faculty, students, and staff who may have concerns about the behavior or well-being of another member of the campus community. By calling BCAL at 512-232-5050, callers may talk with trained staff members who will assist the caller in exploring available options and strategies as well as referrals to appropriate campus support networks.
