Campus Watch: Below is a summary of campus activity reported to or observed by the University Police Department patrol officers between Wednesday, 11/05/08 and Friday, 11/07/08. If you have any information pertaining to any of these cases or other criminal or suspicious activity, please contact the UT Police Department at 512-471-4441. Lightning Strikes: Shots Fired! The University of Texas at Austin Police Department has made important information available to the UT family in the form of a 20-minute video. This information addresses what to do in the event of an active shooter on campus. You may be surprised how much you can learn from a 20-minute video. To view this video, click on the Shots Fired link on the bottom left side of the UT Police web site: http://www.utexas.edu/police/ You will be asked to log in with your EID to view the video. If you have a faculty, staff or student group and would like a member of UTPD come out to show the video and have a brief discussion highlighting the points covered in the video, contact Officer Pieper (232-9638) or Officer Halstead (232-9634) to request the Shots Fired Program. CHILLING STATION 3, 1910 San Jacinto Blvd Theft: A green EZ-GO golf cart was reported stolen after being left parked and unattended on the south side of the building. Loss value: $1,700.00. Occurred on: 11-07-08, between 12:01 AM and 5:00 AM. FRANK ERWIN CENTER, 1701 Red River Criminal Trespass Warning: A non-UT subject was discovered sleeping inside an ice machine located on the east side of the building. During the investigation, the officer issued the subject a written Criminal Trespass Warning for the area. Occurred on: 11-05-08, at 4:48 AM. SAN JACINTO RESIDENCE HALL, 309 East 21st Street Suspicious Person: A UT student was approached by an unknown subject, who followed her to her dormitory in an attempt to get her to purchase a magazine subscription. The unknown subject began making comments that made the student feel uncomfortable. When the student told the subject that she needed to go to an ATM to get some money the unknown subject started to become aggressive in order to get the student to go to the nearest ATM. During the investigation, the officers searched the area but were unable to locate the unknown subject. Occurred on: 11-06-08, at 5:01 PM. Crime Prevention Tip: The University of Texas prohibits solicitation anywhere on campus without prior approval. When approached by any vendor on campus and they become aggressive or overly pushy in order to get you to purchase their merchandise, simply walk away. If that does not work, open your cellular telephone and contact the UT Police Department. We will be happy to explain to them that "NO" is a complete sentence, as we are issuing that person a written Criminal Trespass Warning. UNION BUILDING, #4 West Mall Criminal Trespass Warning (2 Counts): A UT student stopped a UT police officer to report two subjects were stopping students in order to sell magazine subscriptions. During the investigation, the officer located both subjects and issued them written Criminal Trespass Warnings and escorted them from the campus. Occurred on: 11-06-08, at 3:43 PM. 200 BLOCK WEST 21st STREET Criminal Trespass Warning (2 Counts): Non-UT subjects were seen stopping students and soliciting information from the students that stopped. During the investigation, the officers issued both subjects written Criminal Trespass Warnings and escorted them from campus. Occurred on: 11-05-08, at 11:46 AM. Crime Prevention Tip: There are many individuals that will visit UT during the course of a day. Some of these individuals are hoping to catch an unsuspecting student who will provide them with all of their personal information. This information can be used to steal one's identify. If you do not know the individual that you are talking to, or that person is asking personal questions… simply walk away. If they do not comprehend the word no, let one of UT's finest have the opportunity to explain it to them. 300 BLOCK EAST 21st STREET Possession of a Controlled Substance / Tampering with Evidence / Assist Outside Agency: A UT police officer observed a black BMW run through a stop sign at the intersection of San Jacinto and 23rd Street. During the traffic investigation, the officer observed the subject attempting to conceal a cylindrical shaped pill inside the center console as he was looking for his driver's license. When the officer asked to see the pill, the UT student grabbed the pill from the console and swallowed it. The officer removed the subject from the vehicle and took him into custody for Tampering with Evidence. As the investigation continued, the officer discovered three additional pills inside the console that were later identified as a controlled substance. After taking the subject into custody the officer learned that the student had an outstanding outside agency arrest warrant. The subject was transported to Central Booking. Occurred on: 11-07-08, at 1:18 AM. 2300 BLOCK SAN JACINTO BLVD Forgery: Counterfeit U.S. Currency: An unknown subject purchased a cup of coffee at a local business. During the transaction the subject handed the clerk a $50.00 bill that felt different. The clerk handed the unknown subject his change and then realized later the $50.00 bill was peeling apart. Occurred on: 11-06-08, at 7:30 AM. CAMPUS WIDE: Non-Criminal Calls: In addition to the above criminal cases, the University of Texas Police Department responded to 36 alarm calls, 4 medical emergency calls, 5 unsecured door reports, 5 public assist requests and 3 suspicious activity reports between 11/05/08 and 11/07/08.
