Campus Watch: Below is a summary of campus activity reported to or observed by the University Police Department patrol officers between Friday, 11/21/08 and Monday. 11/24/08. DEVELOPMENT OFFICE BUILDING, 2901 North IH 35 Criminal Mischief: An unknown subject used an unknown object to break a small hole in a third floor window. Repair cost: $150.00. Reported on 11/21/08 at 11:02 a.m. GREGORY GYMNASIUM, 2101 Speedway Theft: A Blackberry Curve 8300 cellular telephone was stolen from a closed backpack that was left on the floor of the basketball gymnasium while the owner of the telephone played basketball. Loss value: $300.00. Occurred on 11/23/08 between approximately 11:00 p.m. and 11:30 p.m. Crime Prevention Tip: Thieves love physical activity – basketball, weightlifting, racquetball, ping-pong – any sport that causes the participants to focus on what they are doing. Thieves love such sports as it makes for easy targets. Often times, these athletes are so focused on their game that they do not pay attention to their property they left on the sidelines. While the athlete concentrates on the game, the thief is slipping his sticky fingers into your backpack and walking away with your property. Be mindful that your participation in a sporting activity will indeed divert your attention away form your property. To prevent such thefts, do not take valuables to the gym or make sure such items are secured in a locker before getting your workout on – oh, and don't forget to stretch. JESTER CENTER ACADEMIC, 201 East 21st Street Theft: A new, unknown brand, MP3 player was stolen when it was left in a drawer located inside a 3rd floor office for approximately one month. Loss value: $100.00. Occurred between 10/21/08 and 11/21/08 at 1:30 p.m. LITTLEFIELD DORMITORY, 201 West Dean Keeton Assault Causing Bodily Injury: Two unidentified subjects began to argue with two non-UT subjects while the four were riding on a bus. When the two non-UT subjects exited the bus, the two unidentified subjects struck the two non-UT subjects in the back causing one of the two to fall into nearby bushes. One of the two unidentified subjects then struck the subject in the bush on his face causing an abrasion on his cheek. The two unidentified subjects were described as white male subjects; one wearing a brown blazer, cowboy boots, and Wranglers; the other was wearing a black Northface jacket. Occurred on 11/22/08 at 2:32 a.m. ROBERTS HALL DORMITORY, 303 East 21st Street Public Intoxication: A UT student, who was under the age of 21, was reported as sitting with her head down while on the steps locate don't he north side of the dormitory. The student was found by the officer sitting with her head in her lap while in the remnants of her evenings' consumables. The student did not know where she was or how she got there. The student was found to be under the influence of an alcoholic beverage to the point Austin – Travis County EMS needed to transport the student to a local hospital for alcohol poisoning. Occurred on 11/23/08 at 2:25 a.m. SAN ANTONIO GARAGE, 2420 San Antonio Graffiti: A black permanent marker was used to write words and draw symbols on a 2nd floor stairwell wall. Removal cost: $100.00. Discovered on 11/20/08 at 5:00 p.m. WILL C. HOGG BUILDING, #2 East Mall Theft: 8 Dell Latitude laptop computers and one Dell Inspiron laptop computer were stolen from a 5th floor office. Loss value: $12,500.00. Occurred between 11/19/08 at 5:00 p.m. and 11/20/08 at 8:00 a.m. 2400 San Jacinto Driving While Intoxicated: A non-UT subject was stopped after disregarding a stop sign while driving a white Chrysler PT Cruiser. The subject was found to be under the influence of an alcoholic beverage to the point she was found to be driving while intoxicated. Occurred on 11/22/08 at 1:19 a.m. 2500 San Jacinto Driving Under the Influence by a Minor: A UT student, who was under the age of 21, was stopped after accelerating at a high rate of speed from a stopped position while driving his 2009 Nissan Versa. The student was found to have consumed alcoholic beverages, but not to the point he was driving while intoxicated. Occurred on 11/22/08 at 4:31 a.m. 2200 Speedway Public Intoxication: A non-UT subject was observed stumbling as he attempted to walk along the sidewalk. The subject was found to be under the influence of an alcoholic beverage to the point he was a danger to himself. The subject was turned over to a responsible adult who agreed to assume responsibility for him. Occurred on 11/21/08 at 2:44 a.m. Safety Tip: Many think police officers just salivate over the opportunity to arrest a drunk person. This is not the case; in fact, many officers do not look forward to placing an odiferous person in their squad car knowing that some fluid portion of the person may be left behind in the car. Public Intoxication, like many other alcohol related offenses, are based out of public safety. The concern is focused on the safety of the intoxicated subject. That being said, officers do not always need to arrest a person for public intoxication. Other options include sending the intoxicated subject to the hospital or turning that person over to a sober, responsible adult. 300 East Jester Circle Public Intoxication: A welfare concern report led officers to a non-UT subject, who was under the age of 21 and having problems sitting upright and answering questions. The subject was with a UT student, who was also under the age of 21. The student had been with the subject earlier in the evening and had difficulty getting the subject out of a cab and to San Jacinto Dormitory. The subject exhibited an extreme involuntary physical reaction to the over consumption of an alcoholic beverage. The student wisely realized the subject needed assistance and summoned help. The subject was found to be under the influence of an alcoholic beverage to the point Austin – Travis County EMS needed to transport the subject to a local hospital for the treatment of alcohol poisoning. Occurred on 11/22/08 at 2:11 a.m. 300 East Jester Circle Public Intoxication: A UT student, who was under the age of 21, was observed having difficulty maintaining his balance and staggering while he walked along the sidewalk. The student was in the company of a second UT student, who was trying to provide assistance. The stumbling student was found to be under the influence of an alcoholic beverage to the point he was a danger to himself. The student was turned over to the care of the sober student, but only after he was issued a citation for the consumption of alcohol by a minor. Occurred on 11/23/08 at 3:19 a.m. 201 East 22nd Street Public Intoxication: A non-UT subject was observed having difficulty walking on a grassy hill located on the northeast side of R.A. Steindam Hall. After observing a marked patrol car, the subject demonstrated difficulty walking swiftly away and up a flight a stairs. The subject was unaware of his surroundings or the time of day. The subject was found to be under the influence of an alcoholic beverage to the point he was a danger to himself. Occurred on 11/22/08 at 3:36 a.m. CAMPUS WIDE: Non-Criminal Calls: In addition to the above criminal cases, the University of Texas Police Department responded to 44 alarm calls, 2 unsecured door reports, 2 collision investigations, 2 medical emergency assists, and 1 suspicious odor report, 2 trashcan fires and 5 public assist requests between 11-21-08 and 11-24-08. UTPD generally schedules a Defensive Driving Class approximately once a month – based on need. The classes meet in the University Police Building, Room 1.318, located at 2201 Robert Dedman Dr (east of Memorial Stadium). The cost for the course is $25.00 (check or cash) payable on class date. If paying in cash, please bring the exact amount because change may not be available. You will also need to bring your driver's license.
