Campus Watch: Below is a summary of campus activity reported to or observed by the University Police Department patrol officers between Friday, 12-12-08 AND Monday, 12-15-08. If you have any information pertaining to any of these cases or other criminal or suspicious activity, please contact the UT Police Department at 512-471-4441. BELMONT HALL, 2109 San Jacinto Blvd Theft: A UT staff member discovered 12 gold rings had been taken from an unsecured desk. Loss value: $4.700.00. Discovered on: 12-11-08. GOLDSMITH HALL, #5 West Mall Suspicious Person: A UT student noticed an unknown subject enter a 2nd floor studio and start "rummaging" through some of her classmates desks and backpacks. The student believed that the subject was putting items into his pants pockets, but made it appear that he was tucking in his shirt. The unknown subject was described as: Black male, 30 years of age, very well dressed, black ball cap, and silver framed glasses with black lenses. Occurred on: 12-12-08, at 4:24 PM. JESTER WEST DORMITORY, 201 East 21st Street Assault with Bodily Injury: UT police officers responded to Jester West Dormitory and discovered two UT students had escalated an argument into a fight. One student had thrown an extension cord at her roommate. The roommate reciprocated and threw the cord back. The cord struck the second roommate causing injury. Occurred on: 12-14-08, at 4:48 PM. ROBERT L. MOORE HALL, 2515 Speedway Obscene Display: A UT student entered into a 13th floor computer lab and observed an unknown black male sitting at a computer station viewing pornographic images. The student became offended when he discovered that the unknown black male was sitting bare bottomed while viewing these images. The unknown subject moved the monitor and told the student, "Please don't look." The subject left the area a short time later. During the investigation, the area was searched with negative results. The unknown subject was described as: Black male, 5'-09", 150 pounds, with short or balding hair. The subject was last seen wearing tight fitting dark clothes and spoke in a "feminine voice." Occurred on: 12-15-08, at 12:05 AM. TOWNES HALL, 727 East Dean Keeton Theft: A red hardcover textbook was stolen after being left unattended and unsecured on the 6th floor. During the investigation, the officer searched the area with negative results. Loss value: $50.00. Occurred on:12-13-08, 11:00 AM and 2:30 PM. TOWNES HALL, 727 East Dean Keeton Theft: A UT student reported the theft of his textbook after being left unattended on a table located on the 2nd floor. During the investigation, the officer learned that the student had gone to the Co-Op East and discovered an unknown subject had sold his property back. The unknown subject is described as: White male, 30 to 40 years of age, 5'-6", thin build, short cropped light colored hair, wears wire rimmed glasses. The subject was last seen wearing a blue or black Navy Pee-coat, jeans and was carrying a brown messenger bag. Loss / Recovered value: $50.00. Occurred on: 12-13-08, between 2:00 PM and 2:30 PM. TOWNES HALL, 727 East Dean Keeton Theft: A UT student report an unknown subject had stolen his textbook while he was sleeping on a couch a short distance away. Loss value: $50.00. Occurred on: 12-14-08, between 4:30 PM and 5:15 PM. Crime Prevention Tip: Tis is the season. During finals, it is the hunting season for many thieves. It is a shame that they are currently stalking their next victim. Before you nod off, use your property as a foot rest. Better yet, use it as a head rest. 500 BLOCK WEST 23rd STREET Driving While Intoxicated / Public Intoxication: A silver Nissan Pathfinder was observed traveling without its headlamps on and committing additional traffic violations. During the traffic investigation, the officer detected a very strong odor of alcohol on the driver's breath. The driver stated she had only consumed one beer prior to leaving a local watering hole west of Guadalupe. The officer soon learned that the UT student had been taking prescribed medication prior to drinking. The officer administered the Standardized Field Sobriety tests to the driver. The driver displayed several clues that indicated she was intoxicated. The driver was taken into custody for Driving While Intoxicated. During the investigation, the officer noticed the lone passenger was displaying signs of intoxication. The passenger, also a UT student, was taken into custody for Public Intoxication. Both were transported to Central Booking. Occurred on: 12-14-08, at 12:27 AM. 2300 BLOCK SAN JACINTO BLVD. Driving Under the Influence of Alcohol by a Minor / Driving Without a License: A silver VW was observed committing several traffic violations. During the traffic investigation, the officer detected a moderate odor of alcohol on the driver's breath and inside the passenger compartment. The officer learned that the driver was under the legal age of 21 and had been consuming alcohol earlier in the evening. As the investigation continued, the officer soon learned, the driver had allowed her driver's license to expire. The officer issued the subject a field release citation for Driving Under the Influence of Alcohol by a Minor and Driving Without a License. Occurred on: 12-15-08, at 2:43 AM. 2400 BLOCK SAN JACINTO BLVD Driving While Intoxicated (Open container): A black motorcycle was observed traveling 3X the posted speed. During the traffic investigation, the officer detected a very strong odor of alcohol on the subject's breath and noted the subject's eyes were bloodshot and watery. During the investigation, the officer administered the Standardized Field Sobriety tests. The non-UT subject displayed enough clues that indicated he was intoxicated. During a search, the officer discovered a green water bottle that contained an alcoholic beverage, hints the enhancement to the DWI. Occurred on: 12-14-08, at 2:18 AM. 2500 BLOCK SAN JACINTO BLVD. Graffiti: Words written in black and white spray paint were discovered on a brick retaining wall. Loss value: Unknown at this time. Discovered on: 12-14-08, at 8:45 AM. 2900 BLOCK GUADALUPE Public Intoxication: A UT police officer heard a loud bang and observed a non-UT subject staggering and having a difficult time maintaining his navigational beacons. During the investigation, the officer detected a very strong odor of alcohol on the subject's breath and noted the subject could not maintain his balance. The subject was taken into custody for Public Intoxication and was transported to Central Booking. At Central Booking, the subject's intoxication level continued to increase to a point where the jail nurse contacted Austin EMS. The subject was transported to a local area hospital for further treatment. Occurred on: 12-14-08, at 6:30 AM. Administrative Message: It is that time of the year again. CAMPUS WIDE: Non-Criminal Calls: In addition to the above criminal cases, the University of Texas Police Department responded to 73 alarm calls, 1 medical emergency assist, 4 public assist requests, 6 unsecured door reports, 2 welfare concern reports, and 3 suspicious activity reports between 12-12-08 and 12-15-08.
