Report for 01/06/2009

Campus Watch: Below is a summary of campus activity reported to or observed by the University Police Department patrol officers between Monday, 01/05/09 and Tuesday, 01/06/09. If you have any information pertaining to any of these cases or other criminal or suspicious activity, please contact the UT Police Department at 512-471-4441. ***New Year Resolutions*** With 2008 in the history books, we all need to reflect on the previous year and look for a good 2009. I must say thefts seemed to be a daily occurrence in 2008. My goal is to reduce the number of thefts, as well as every other crime category in 2009. As good as the UT Police Department is, I will admit we can't reduce crime on our own. The creation and maintenance of a crime free society is the responsibility of every citizen. To that end, I would like to implore each of you to make the following resolutions: - In the year 2009 I will take ownership and responsibility of my area of control on campus. - I will treat university property as if it were my own and work diligently to protect it from theft. - I will secure my office or workspace whenever I leave that area. - I will not leave my property unsecured – not even for a few seconds. - I will be mindful of the people around me and report any suspicious activity to the police department at 512-471-4441. - I will take the time to engrave my personal property with my state issued driver's license number. - I will maintain a property log for my personal property and departmental property assigned to my work area. - At a minimum, I will use a quality u-lock to secure my bicycle. If I am serious about protecting this form of transportation, I use a u-lock and a cable lock to secure my bicycle. - I will register my bicycle with UT Parking and Transportation Services. This can be done on-line at http://www.utexas.edu/parking/transportation/biking/registration.html - I will keep the interior of my car free of all personal items. This will reduce the risk of my car being broken into. - I will better understand the risks of consuming too much alcohol and I pledge to utilize some measure to help keep me safe when I do drink alcoholic beverages. This can be in the form of having a sober friend with me when I go out, knowing my limits & sticking to such limits, utilizing public transportation like the e-bus or cab services when I go out. - I will take action for my personal safety. I will take a personal safety course such as the Rape Aggression Defense (RAD) program. RAD offered free of charge to female faculty, staff and student members.
