Campus Watch: Below is a summary of campus activity reported to or observed by the University Police Department patrol officers between Tuesday, 01/06/09 and Wednesday, 01/07/09. If you have any information pertaining to any of these cases or other criminal or suspicious activity, please contact the UT Police Department at 512-471-4441. ***Scam Alert*** This morning, I and several other members of the university community received an e-mail from a sender listed as UNIVERSITY OF TEXAS. The narrative of the e-mail reads as follows: This is to notify you that we are presently UPGRADING our UNIVERSITY OF TEXAS WEBMAIL, this maintenance can close your WEBMAIL account completely, to protect your WEBMAIL from being closed, please forward your UT EID and PASSWORD to our customer services with email address: emailaccountprotector@ymail.com This is a phishing scam and should not be responded to! Simply delete the e-mail from your in-box. COLORADO APARTMENTS, 2500 Lake Austin Blvd Burglary of Motor Vehicle: The left front window was broken out of a gold Honda 4-door while the vehicle was parked on the south side of apartment building F. A mobile GPS locator was stolen form the vehicle. Prior to the window being broken out, a resident in building F heard a thump then a car alarm. The resident looked out of his window and saw a male with a dark complexion running from the vehicle. The subject was last seen wearing a dark jacket and dark pants. Repair cost: $150.00. Loss value: $125.00. Occurred on 01/07/09 at 3:32 a.m. COLORADO APARTMENTS, 2500 Lake Austin Blvd Burglary of Motor Vehicle: The left rear window was broken out of a gold Kia 4-door while the vehicle was parked on the north side of apartment building D. A car stereo was stolen form the vehicle. Repair cost: $150.00. Loss value: $125.00. Discovered on 01/07/09 at approximately 3:40 a.m. 2300 San Jacinto Driving While Intoxicated / Leaving the Scene Collision: Two UT Police Officers observed a white Honda driving south through the intersection of 23rd Street and San Jacinto. The Honda caught both officers' attention as it had heavy front end damage and had what appeared to be smoke coming from its engine compartment. The officers stopped the vehicle after they followed it to a dead end service drive. The subject had difficulty exiting the vehicle and standing on his own. When asked how much he had to drink, the subject replied, “enough.” It was later determined that “enough” amounted to 2 pitchers of beer. The subject stated he was coming form a drinking establishment located just north of the campus and was headed to his home in Round Rock, Texas which is also located north of campus. The subject admitted he had been in an accident in the 2300 block of San Jacinto. The vehicle the subject had struck sustained substantial rear end damage. During the collision, a front seat passenger in the suspect's car was propelled into the windshield causing the windshield to break. The passenger did not show any signs of injury as he continued to wag his tail throughout the investigation. The subject was found to be under the influence of an alcoholic beverage to the point he was deemed to have been driving while intoxicated. After the passenger was examined by one of he UTPD K-9 officers, he was released to the father of the suspect. Occurred on 01/07/09 at 2:15 a.m. CAMPUS WIDE: Non-Criminal Calls: In addition to the above criminal cases, the University of Texas Police Department responded to 13 alarm calls, 5 unsecured door reports, 2 public assists, 3 light survey reports and 2 suspicious activity reports report between 01/06/09 and 01/07/09. UTPD generally schedules a Defensive Driving Class approximately once a month – based on need. The classes meet in the University Police Building, Room 1.318, located at 2201 Robert Dedman Dr (east of Memorial Stadium). The cost for the course is $25.00 (check or cash) payable on class date. If paying in cash, please bring the exact amount because change may not be available. You will also need to bring your driver's license.
