Campus Watch: Below is a summary of campus activity reported to or observed by the University Police Department patrol officers between Friday, 01-09-09 and Monday, 01-12-09. If you have any information pertaining to any of these cases or other criminal or suspicious activity, please contact the UT Police Department at 512-471-4441. ASHBELL SMITH HALL, 201 West 7th Street Criminal Trespass Warning: A non-UT subject was discovered setting up a camp site on the north side of the building. During the investigation, the subject informed the officers that he intended to go to sleep as soon as they, the officers left. The subject was issued a written Criminal Trespass Warning and was escorted from the area. Occurred on: 1-11-09, at 3:47 AM. ENGINEERING TEACHING CENTER, 204 East Dean Keeton Theft: A blue KHS mountain bicycle was stolen from the bike racks located on the west side of the building after being secured with a self-locking cable lock. Loss value: $150.00. Occurred on: 1-08-09, between 9:30 AM and 6:30 PM. JESTER WEST DORMITORY, 201 East 21ST Street Theft: A Dell desktop computer and a Dell widescreen monitor were taken from a secured third floor office. Loss value: $500.00. Occurred between: 1-08-09, at 3:00 PM and 1-09-09, at 10:00 AM. JESTER WEST DORMITORY, 201 East 21ST Street Suspicious Activity / Criminal Trespass Warning: A UT student observed a suspicious subject exit a green Ford Mustang and appear to strap something to his ankle. The student lost sight of the subject. During the investigation, the officers searched the area and located two non-UT subjects inside the Jester Academic Center. As the investigation continued, the officer issued both subjects a written Criminal Trespass Warning and escorted them from the area. Occurred on: 1-11-09 at 10:49 PM. SW7, 2617 Speedway Graffiti: Words written in black magic marker were discovered on the north exterior wall. Loss value est. $50.00. Discovered on: 1-09-09 at 11:53 PM. TRINITY PARKING GARAGE, 1815 Trinity Criminal Trespass Warning: A non-UT was observed entering the Trinity Garage and attempting to sell basketball tickets. As the investigation continued, the subject was located and was issued a written Criminal Trespass Warning. Occurred on: 1-10-09, at 2:25 PM. 1900 BLOCK GUADALUPE Driving While Intoxicated: A Nissan truck was observed traveling without its headlamps illuminating the roadway. During the traffic investigation, the officer detected a very strong odor of alcohol on the driver's breath. As the investigation continued, the officer determined that the driver had been consuming alcohol and was operating a motor vehicle. The non-UT driver was taken into custody for Driving While Intoxicated and was transported to Central Booking. Occurred on: 1-11-09, at 2:28 AM. Crime Prevention Tip: I hope that everyone is still sticking to their New Year's resolutions. I know that the UT Police Department's Crime Prevention Unit still are. Part of our resolution is to work towards a reduction in the overall crime rate at the University of Texas. Last week, we compiled some of the raw data and want to pass the following along. Top 5 most stolen items at UT for 2008 Items Totals Bicycles 172 stolen bicycles Credit/ Debit Cards 146 Wallets/ Purses/ Backpacks 112 Cash 89 Laptop Computers 87 Total value of reported stolen property: $310,343. Top 5 locations for theft at UT #1 Jester Dormitory #2 PCL #3 RLM #4 UNB #5 GRE Now that we know where the thieves are working and what they are going after, as a community, let's work together in reducing the overall crime at UT. I would like to send my personal kudos to the staff at Gregory Gym in the over all reduction in the number of thefts. Gregory Gym moved from last year's #3 spot to number 5 overall. CAMPUS WIDE: Non-Criminal Calls: In addition to the above criminal cases, the University of Texas Police Department responded to 39 alarm calls, 18 unsecured door reports, 1 public assist, 1 suspicious activity, 1 grass fire, 1 welfare concern and 1 collision between 01-09-09 and 01-12-09.
