Report for 01/13/2009

Campus Watch: Below is a summary of campus activity reported to or observed by the University Police Department patrol officers between Monday, 01/12/09 and Tuesday, 01/13/09. If you have any information pertaining to any of these cases or other criminal or suspicious activity, please contact the UT Police Department at 512-471-4441. ART BUILDING AND MUSEUM, 2301 san Jacinto Burglary: 400 to 500 pounds of scrap aluminum drainage grates that had been removed during a renovation project had been stolen from a 1st floor room. Loss value: $340.00. Occurred between 01/09/09 at 4:00 p.m. and 01/12/09 at 6:30 a.m. 300 West 24th Street Suspicious Activity / Criminal Trespass Warning: A non-UT subject was reported as removing a red bicycle from the bicycle racks. The reporting person stated he believed the subject was stealing the bicycle. The subject and bicycle were located a block away. The subject stated he had no business on campus. There was not enough evidence to show the subject had stolen the bicycle. The subject was issued a written criminal trespass warning. Occurred on 01/12/09 at 11:12 a.m. 1800 Guadalupe Possession of Drug Paraphernalia: A non-UT subject, who is a known bicycle thief, was reported as loitering outside of a business located at MLK and Guadalupe Street. The reporting person advised the subject has attempted to sell bicycles at that location in the past. The subject was found to be in possession of an orange and silver bicycle. The subject was also found to be in possession of several tools that are commonly used to defeat bicycle locks and a glass pipe containing a white powdery substance believed to be cocaine. Occurred on 01/12/09 at 8:26 p.m. Crime Prevention Tip: In the above two cases, it is believed (rather strongly) that the bicycles had been stolen. The officers on the street were not able to establish proper ownership of the bicycles as the bicycles were not registered with UT Parking and Transportation Services. The bicycles also did not have any applied owner identifiers. To assist law enforcement with determining the ownership of your bicycle, make sure you do the following: - Register your bicycle with UT Parking and Transportation Services. This is required for any bicycle operated or parked on campus. It is a free service and can be done on-line at: http://www.utexas.edu/parking/transportation/biking/registration.html - Mark your bicycle, and other valuables for that matter, with your state issued driver's license number or state issued identification number. In Texas it would be something like TX 12345678. To mark your property, stop by the UT Police Department at 2201 Robert Dedman Austin, Texas and check out an electric engraver free of charge. If you live in an on-campus dormitory, stop by your front desk to check out an engraver. Mark your property before the semester begins. Help us to identify property as lost or stolen – thereby protecting our campus. 2300 Guadalupe Assist Outside Agency / Possession of Alcohol By a Minor / Possession of Drug paraphernalia / Possession of a Controlled Substance: A non-UT subject was stopped for driving left of center while operating a silver Nissan sport utility vehicle. The subject was found to have two outstanding outside agency arrest warrants for failure to show drive license and failure to maintain a single lane of traffic of all things. Several bottles of alcohol were located on the back floorboard where a second non-UT subject was seated. That subject was under the age of 21. Two pipes were located in the center consol. The pipes contained cocaine residue. A bottle containing several Skelaxin and Propranolol pills was found in a backpack in the cargo area of the vehicle. Occurred on 01/12/09 at 3:59 a.m. CAMPUS WIDE: Non-Criminal Calls: In addition to the above criminal cases, the University of Texas Police Department responded to 16 alarm calls, 2 unsecured door reports, 1 suspicious substance, 1 welfare concern and 1 suspicious odor between 01/12/09 and 01/13/09.
